That's because if your a forward your measured on scoring, theres no count for your clearances. Aswell if you have a quiet game as back it's a good thing because it means your man is being kept down, you could put on a great show and not touch the ball
Ring / Keher/Shefflin/Canning/Doyle....saw them all but these were forwards .. 5.great defenders?? O'Donnell / Doyle/JJ Delaney/Seanie Mc Mahon/Billy Rackard....saw them all too...great days!!
D J best I saw. Going to game since 1969. Canning, Keher, Cregan, Jimmy Doyle, T J Reid. Sheflin, Eoin Kelly, Tony Kelly, all great forwards, Backs, Tommy Walsh, J J Delaney Mick Roche, Ger Henderson, Brian Whelehan, Brian Logan. Never saw Ring or Mackey, but Ring was revered by all for such a long time, more than any other player and followed closely by Mackey, maybe they deserve to be number 1 & 2. We can’t compare eras so those that had spectators in awe in their era should be getting the same praise as current players. Hurling didn’t start 10 or 15 years ago, as some of the present generation may think. Hurling was always great and there was great players in every era. Appreciate it as long as it exists. The best game on our little island.
The hurlers back then were the very best of their eras. Same for Soccer, Rugby etc. Look back at those sports and the same could be said for speed, skill etc. They were the players who were a joy to watch at the time. It is an insult to the players who were the best of the best in the 40's/50's and onwards etc and say they do not come near modern players. Look at the coaching, fitness, facilities, nutrition available to modern players. Even in my time over the last 40 years, things have changed. Is that to say Noel Skehan, JBM, John Fenton, Nicky English, Pat Fox, Frank Cummins, Tony Doran, Ray Cummins, Joe McKenna, players who I saw wouldn't come near players now? No way.
No mention of Jimmy Barry-Murphy, John Fenton, Eamonn Cregan, Ciaran Carey, Anthony Daly, Martin Storey, Brian Whelehan, Joe Cooney, Joe Canning, Paudie Delaney, Tony Doran, Ray Cummins, John Mullane, Tony Browne, Pat Carroll, Joe Hennessy
Obviously not my era. I think Christy Ring was the greatest ever. As a lad I saw him playing for Glen Rovers against St. Finbars, he was magic the opposition could not get the ball off him once it was passed to him, and it seemed as tho, the sliothar was glued to his caman, as he ran the length of the pitch, a number of times. There were great hurlers at that time, like the Mackies of Limerick Jim Langton of Kilkenny, and my previous hero John Keane, of my own county, Waterford, but Christy outshone all of them. I have ever seen his equal since . Rose coloured glasses? Maybe.
n o one mentions mick roche pure class rip. ,,in the old hurling you would never never put up your hand to catch a ball.. it did not happen.. ..where is Nick english.. or o halpin ... or delaney and troy ..
C'mon D.J. ....a God on the feild...when i was a kid D.J. was just starting county but he would come over to our village at my Dads request and coach and talk to a bunch of 12 year olds for hours...Gentleman
My top 10 would be. 10 = Pat Hartigan 9= Nicky Rackard= 8 = Nick O' Donnell 7= Christy Ring 6= Mick Mackey 5=Jimmy Doyle.4= Eddie Keher = 3 Henry Shefflin= 2 D.J. Carey = 1= Tommy Walsh. It may seem biased towards Kilkenny but they are the best 36 All- Irelands says it all. There are so many greats that it is harder to pick who to leave out than put in. Other greats in my opinion would be. Ray Cummins, Jimmy Barry Murphy, John Fenton, John Horgan, Denis Coughlan from Cork. Nicky English, Tony Reddan, John Doyle, Mick Roche, Liam Devaney, from Tipp. Bobby Rackard, Colm Doran (way better than Tony even though he never won an All- Ireland) Ned Wheeler, Liam Dunne. Gerry O' Connor from Wexford. Joe Cooney, Pete Finnerty, Tony Keady, Joe Canning, John Connolly, Joe Salmon. Joe Rabbitte from Galway. Joe, John and Billy Dooley, Brian Wheelahan, Martin Hanamy, Eugene Coughlan, Pat Delaney, Joachim Kelly. From Offaly. Tom Cheasty, John Mullane, John Sutton. From Waterford. Eamon Cregan, Joe Mc Kenna, Sean Foley, Leonard Enright, From Limerick. Brian Lohan, Seanie Mc Mahon, Tony Kelly, Jimmy Smyth, From Clare. Christy O' Brien, Pat Critchley from Laois. Des Foley From Dublin. The list is endless and I have left out loads but I could go on for ever.
@@markjdonn I didn't forget Eugene, Very good Galway forward, but not quite up to the very top players. I just do not think he is top 20 never mind top 10
All I can say is that I've spoken to so many people who've seen Ring, Rackard, Langton,Doyle, Roche, Keher, JBM, Carey, Shefflin, Canning, Tommy Walsh, Callanan, Eoin Kelly Tipp, (to name a few) etc. The common denominator is that they almost all say that Ring was the greatest. I always ask them to take off any rose tinted glasses etc when saying who was the best, taking into account the speed of the modern game and fitness etc. What you must remember, is that the players from the 40's right up to the present day were all some of the greatest of their eras. That means that there is no reason not to believe that if around now, older players wouldn't be the greatest of the present era. With that in mind, my father, one such person who saw all the above mentioned players, said that Ring, Doyle and Mackey, in that order, were the 3 greatest. He was too young to have seen Mackey play and bases his ranking on his father's opinion, he also an astute judge of players. It is all subjective. I have seen players from Seanie O'Leary, Billy Fitzpatrick, Ger Henderson, Noel Skehan , JBM, John Fenton, Frank Cummins, Joe McKenna, Tony Doran, Joe Cooney, Tony Keady, Tom Cashman, Nicky English, Pat Fox, John Leahy, Brian Whelehan, DJ, John Troy, Brian Corcoran, JJ Delaney, Eoin Kelly, Tommy Walsh, Cian Lynch, Kyle Hayes, Gillane, etc. All great players. I cannot comment properly on those beforehand, only what I see on grainy video. For the best assessment of who was the greatest I get the opinion of those who were around from the early 50's (tv era and those still alive) onwards. As Ring said shortly before he died, 'The best players are with us now and better still to come'. For what it's worth, and because my father has always had a brilliant eye for assessing players, I go with his opinion as expressed above.
DJ Carey is the greatest because he changed how the game was played, how players hit the ball and brought average Kilkenny teams to All-Ireland Finals. He could change the course of any game in an instant. When he got the ball the whole crowd would fall silent for a second because whether you were from Kilkenny or the other team you knew that he could do anything.
I agree with you on Carey's ability to change a game etc. He was a wizard, no doubt. I recall 1997 AI quarter final when he single handedly beat Galway on his own in Thurles. Ring and Mackey were doing exactly that in the 40's and 50's. That sense that when they got the ball, it almost always spelt trouble for the opposition. Having said that, Carey is the best you saw, because you did not see Ring Mackey or any other from that era, nor did I. Many older people in Kilkenny will tell you Keher was better than Carey for example.
Mick Mackey was arguably as good as Christy Ring. My grandfather from Offaly always said Mackey was his favourite hurler. Ring always had a great team around him, but Mackey could single handedly take a game by the scruff of the neck.
I think these lists need to be separated by era. In Rings days there was huge amount of skill in striking the ball in the air. That type of hurling hasn't been played for years. From 1990 maybe shef, dj definitely. But Tommy Walsh ahead of Brian Whelan, no way. You could argue Dan Shanahan cause no other forward came within an ass's roar of what he did in 2007. John Mullane has a higher percentage scores from play than shefin. Brian Corcoran won all ireland's as a centre back and a full forward. In no particular order, Corcoran, Whelan, DJ, Mullane and Canning.
Christy Ring should be number 1 and Henry Shefflin was way better than DJ Carey. Jimmy Barry Murphy MICK Mackey especially and Eddie Keher etc should also be in the top 5.
The problem with all time lists in Hurling is it changes so much from era to era think what Mackey era compared to ring or Doyle's era had to do to get a free compared to shefflin even DJ Carey's era was harder to get a free. So these list are a bit silly.
Everyone stop commenting “joe canning???” Like he didn’t deserve it when this video was made. Still don’t think he does. Everyone on the list deserved it
Impossible to pick. So many backs never get the credit forwards do.
That's because if your a forward your measured on scoring, theres no count for your clearances. Aswell if you have a quiet game as back it's a good thing because it means your man is being kept down, you could put on a great show and not touch the ball

Theres this man he is kind of Corks own hurling king his name is Jimmy Barry Murphy ever heard of him?
dick o hara might.
No
No never heard of him sounds like a knacker
This is a good list and is fairly good (mostly because I’m from kilkenny and there was 3 kilkenny lads on it ;) )
Hurlers back years ago don't come near the hurlers of 2 day the skill these guys have is a joy 2 watch.
The hurlers back then were the very best of their eras. Same for Soccer, Rugby etc. Look back at those sports and the same could be said for speed, skill etc. They were the players who were a joy to watch at the time. A killkenny man who's never heard of Eddie Kehir or Fan Larkin John Connelly Jimmy Barry Murphy Mark Corrigan and Nicky English all worth a mention.

John Dowling D.j Ceary is better than Christy Ring
John Dowling
Ring was the greatest
A Tipp man
n o one mentions mick roche pure class rip. ,,in the old hurling you would never never put up your hand to catch a ball.. it did not happen.. ..where is Nick english.. or o halpin ... or delaney and troy ..
No he didn’t run the pitch you liar he was a full forward
In my honest opinion I have never seen anyone better than DJ. No hurler before or since could come close to him. From a Tipp man
I'm from kilkenny and I've seen dj carey playing with his club gowran lots of times, he is without question the greatest hurler I've seen
DJ was in the County Arms in Birr one night giving a talk. He said "If John Troy had been a Kilkenny man I'd never have been heard of."
C'mon D.J. ....a God on the feild...when i was a kid D.J. was just starting county but he would come over to our village at my Dads request and coach and talk to a bunch of 12 year olds for hours...Gentleman

Your from Kilkenny
I'd have Tommy Walsh Number 1 aswell.
@@markjdonn I didn't forget Eugene, Very good Galway forward, but not quite up to the very top players. I just do not think he is top 20 never mind top 10
Christy Ring once said if Jimmy Smith ( clare) was from Cork no one would be talking about me !!!

Shefflin, Mackey, Ring, Kelleher, Carey.
