    Castle of Illusion, being an early Genesis games, and, released in 1990 just one day before the Super Famicom in Japan, holds a lot of sentimental value to people who used to play it. It was clearly made with a lot of care and was unmatched at the time. The Magical Quest was released two years later, and it was a superior game. It had better graphics (the backgrounds look amazing, even though Mickey's animations look better on Illusion), great music (even though Illusion's soundtrack is even better, a real classic), and better gameplay. But at the time our jaws had already been dropped by other games being released for 16-bit systems such as Street Fighter II, Sonic 2, TMNT IV, Ecco the Dolphin, the whole library of Neo Geo games, and so many others. Magical Quest was just another great game, among other great games released during the peak of 16-bit systems popularity. Even being a better game, it was never going to be as revolutionary as Castle of Illusion was two years earlier.

    One of the great things about the Magical Quest sequels is that they can be played in a really newbie-friendly 2-player co-op mode. Great for playing with my little one who likes video games but hasn't got the skills yet. If she gets a game over I can keep playing and she can join back in when we get to the next screen. She's even managed a few boss kills herself.
    And yes, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is awful.

    Good video and thanks for bringing up the Master System/Game Gear title it often gets overlooked for obvious reasons. You clearly are a huge Bionic Commando fan because most reviewers who cover Magical Quest seem to have a hard time adjusting to the controls. You make it look super easy.
    You're a good dad to sit down with your daughter and actually watch these shows with her. My dad told me he used to "forget" where he put some of my VHS tapes from time to time so we'd have to watch something different to help his sanity.

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  9 лет назад

      YourPalSal [Coury] Yep, I'm a huge Bionic Commando fan - I actually have a series recollection in the works currently, hoping to see a release in a month or so!
      I think a lot of what makes it easier to sit and watch these shows with her is the different portable devices we have access to now. I'll be there with her, but i can do other things at the same time. I think I'd go crazy if I had to watch this thing and pay complete attention to it.

    I played the Game Gear version of Castle Of Illusion as a kid and it was pretty solid. Megadrive/Genesis was so good though. There was some great cartoony platformers back then. The Tiny Toon Adventure games were my favourites.
    Played a copy of Magical Quest just recently and I was so bad at it. Such a nice game to look at though. Mickey Mania is worth playing too because it takes you through the history of Mickey Mouse cartoons. It's probably the best looking Mickey mouse game from that era.

But the game itself was very well-made.

    Loved the video Coury.
    I have to say, I know how it feels to keep watching that Mickey Mouse show. When i lived with my brother, his g/f would bring his son over and watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. I now know the dance to the Hot Dog song.
    As for the games, Castle of Illusion was actually the first game i got for my Sega Genesis as a kid. It was a Christmas present one year. I still enjoy the game, and I actually really liked the remake that they made. I feel like it might have had the distinction of coming out when the Ducktales remake came out...so people gravitated toward that.
    I do think that Quackshot was a good game too. I own a cart of that so i pull it out from time to time.
    I'd definitely give World of Illusion a look too. It has some flaws but I still find it fun. The cool thing about the game is that depending who you play as, the levels change a bit. So, it gives you an incentive to play it multiple times.
    Magical Quest was ok in my book. It has its moments where its just nintendo hard. There was one boss i had alot of trouble with near the end of the game...and then there was the one jump on the rock climbing level that...UGH.
    Anywho thanks for the memories. Look forward to your next video.

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  9 лет назад

      Paladin356 Thanks! Thats awesome that it was the first game for your Genesis. What a way to introduce the system!
      I'll revisit QuackShot a bit more deeply soon. I had several people tell me I should, and I really haven't played it since it came out (I beat it then).
      World of Illusion seems OK, I'd like to try it a bit more as well. From the bit of time I spent with it capturing video for this, i wasn't super impressed.

    Castle of Illusion was one of the best platformers for the Genesis in my opinion, just overall it was a great game. Music was good too which is is probably surprising to most seeing as the Genesis is known for horrible sound. Sometimes they did it right.
    I enjoy seeing retro Sega reviews, you just don't see them very often (I know Magical Quest is for the SNES). Great work, thoroughly enjoyed the video!

      ***** It can be hard to find the gems for the Genesis sometimes but they are out there believe it or not. Chakan and Kid Chameleon are some of the lesser knowns that are fantastic platformers as well. Just beware, Kid Chameleon can be painful.
      If you like sports titles at all, I found the Genesis had the better batch of games. I still play NHL 96 once and a while.

    I have to disagree with your opinion of the Magical Quest soundtrack. It's my favorite aspect of the game and truly has some phenomenal scoring that suits the mood of each world. From the Treetops theme depicting the start of a great adventure to Snow Valley's beautiful, twinkling atmosphere. Sure, there are some weaker tracks, but this is one of my personal favorite soundtracks in all of gaming.

    I prefer the bubbly line heavy pixel art of Magical Quest over Castle of Illusion. It it also looks like it uses the same engine as Demon's Crest. I'm not a fan of graphics, hit detection, and limited continues in Castle of Illusion. Those darn As kept destroying me. I've only played Great Circus Mystery, so I don't know much about the first game.

    My son was hooked on Mickey Mouse Road Rally on Netflix as well. I guess it is part of a new Mickey Mouse Clubhouse series that's on Disney Channel and there are quite a few episodes on RUclips. Now, they are all pretty awful, but at least there are other episodes that she can watch and you won't want to pull out your eyes when every episode starts, as you have probably watched that one episode enough times to foster a deep, burning hatred of Toodles.
    Also, the music for all if the episodes were done by They Might Be Giants. Not that it makes the music better, but eh...

    The hell you doing, man?! Letting your daughter watch that silliness?! You mean to say you *didn't* get the Walt Disney Treasures box set with the color Mickey cartoons, or even downloaded them and put them on dvd after they went out of print and got expensive? And now she is hooked on something you can't stand? You must not have thought that far ahead when it comes to considering what you'd be forced to watch when your daughter starts to develop interests! As an animation fan, I chortle at your pain! CHORTLE, I say!!
    Aw, but I'm just taking the piss out of you. My parents would often watch stuff with me that they didn't like. It's a good gesture, and she'll remember it. But, seriously, I collect animation, and I'm going to have a good dvd collection of stuff in case anything like that happens to me.

      ShogunGin0 [Coury] Oh we definitely have several good Disney movies, my daughter is really obsessed with Bambi and The Little Mermaid right now. But its crazy how kids will just latch onto certain things and just want to watch it over and over, despite if its good or bad.

    • @ShogunGin0
      @ShogunGin0 9 лет назад

      ***** ...Oooh boy, you just had to mention THAT movie to me...
      While I may have just been giving you a hard time about the Mickey show, can I speak seriously to you about one thing you just mentioned? Don't let her get into Little Mermaid. You do NOT want your daughter to look up to Ariel in any way. Give her literally ANY other Disney movie to watch. (Except Mulan 2, that's also completely terrible)
      I disagree with most people who say that certain cartoons are "bad influences" on kids, but Little Mermaid is the only one that I fear may be. Ariel is the worst Disney princess they ever wrote. Ariel causes every problem in the movie out of selfishness and ignorance, does nothing to fix those problems, goes through no arc to learn from her mistakes, and, in the end, she is given *everything* she wanted, while having done nothing to earn any of it. If it weren't for the fact that the movie was written by two men, I would have guessed that it was some kind of self-insert fanfiction written by some 13 year old girl whose parents don't always give her her way. Ariel is no one for any young girl to watch. Even the direct to video sequel, which is still a bad movie, is better because at least Ariel's daughter is smarter and more capable than her mother, and your daughter may relate to her better.
      I'm not an easily offended guy when it comes to movies, but I find myself utterly disgusted with Ariel. I may not be a parent yet, but if I do have a daughter, there's no way I'm letting her see that without at least knowing she's mentally mature enough to realize that it's not a good idea to idolize fairy tales. If she does want more Ariel, give her the third movie, or download the episodes of the 90's Little Mermaid cartoon (they were never released on home video), because Ariel is a far better character in those.
      It may sound like I'm overreacting, and I may very well be, but I urge you to take the movie away from her. At least for now. She may hate you for it, but she's, what, three? She'll find other things to latch on to and force you to watch, but at least they won't be Little Mermaid.

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  9 лет назад

      Oh my wife and I are well aware of how awful Ariel is. We joke that she falls in love with Prince Eric solely based on his looks, and is just an overall idiot.
      Luckily my daughter isn't so much into the character, but more just mermaids in general. She wanted a mermaid doll that last Christmas.
      We have large aquarium near us that we have a pass to, that we take our daughter to if the other person needs to get some work done. One day we went and they had people in the tanks dressed as mermaids, and that's where things started.
      But as these things usually go, shes already done with mermaids and has moved on to anything with Tinkerbell.

    • @ShogunGin0
      @ShogunGin0 9 лет назад

      ***** But I thought you said she was currently obsessed with the movie. Did she just suddenly shift interests in between our comments?
      Well, in any case, that makes me feel better. I take it she's now watching the recent CGI Tinkerbell movies? Kinda funny how Tink went from, well, a bitch, really, who tried to kill Wendy out of jealousy to an adventurer fairy princess.
      Maybe she'll like Ducktales or Gummi Bears, if you get the dvds. Maybe even Gargoyles when she's older.

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  9 лет назад

      Nah, what I meant was she is obsessed with the movie but obsession has to do with the mermaids in the movie. She likes watching it because theres Mermaids in it, not the characters. All mermaids are Ariel the Mermaid.
      The Tinkerbell stuff is fairly new, so I haven't had a chance to take it in yet.

    I feel the complete opposite. Castle of Illusion on Genesis has nothing going for it except graphics. Very awkward movement and physics, and average to awful level design (the third stage is outright trash), and lame boss fights with the exception of the witch.
