  • HOW TO DO A POWER FLUSH Step by step guide on how to powerflush a gas combi boiler, Powerflushing a central heating system.
    Today we're gonna talk about power flushing. We are here in leeds today. Powerflushing a central heating system in Leeds So I've got my new power flush machine here, and we've got a combi boiler. So what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna do a power flush on a combi boiler system. So what we've done, put some tees in the pipework here, and first of all what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna connect onto these tees with the power flush machine, and then we're gonna flush it through. We're gonna heat the water up with a heater on it, and we'll see how long that takes to warm up. So this is all now cold at the moment. It's been off for a while, so I'm gonna trust that it's cold. And then we'll see how we go. So let's get started.
    So we've got a filter on this, so it's gonna be very easy just to drain it down. So first of all we're just gonna let all the pressure out of it. Just let that drain down there. So in normal use, if you've got a combi boiler and you've got your pipes coming down underneath your combi boiler, it may be that you want to just cut some tees into flow and return, and then that way you can just flush from that. You can also get a flushing adapter for the pump. So then you can just flush directly from the pump. So what I've done here, I've just got some push fit fittings and I'm connecting the pipes onto it. I use push fit, I use speed fit normally, because you can just take them back off afterwards and you can reuse them. So I like to use speed fit. So we'll connect our hoses onto this now.
    So as we can see there we've connected this flow and return with these blue hoses, and they connect onto power flush machine there. So these valves at the top we're gonna turn off. So they would normally be for the dump, so when we're starting to dump the water out of it. And then we've got our filling point there. On this I'm just gonna use boiler, so I'm just gonna use the filling loop on the boiler, just for demonstration of this. And then in there, that's where we'd put our chemicals. We've plugged our pump into that one, and then we've plugged the heater into this one separately.
    So on this it's got a filling loop here. So all I'm gonna do for now is just by doing that, and then that'll put water in the machine. It'll take a while though. So when we look on machine, it's got a minimum point and it's got a maximum point there. And then this connection here, this is the overflow. So if it started to leak water out it'd come out of here. So obviously if you had it in the tub it comes with it'd have a flow into that, or you can connect a hose pipe to that as well. So as we can see here now, the level's going up. I don't know if you can just see it there. You can just see water level is going up. It's about here now. So we're probably gonna get about half way.
    So we've got the water there now, just above half. And then what we're gonna do now, I'm gonna put the heater on. We'll see how long that takes to warm up.
    So then you put your chemicals in. So you can put whatever brand of chemicals you like in. So for today we've got this long life sludge remover from Norstrom. So we're gonna out that in. But you could use Fernox, you could use Sentinel or ADEY. They're all very good for power flushing.
    So just while we're waiting for that now to warm up, so how this will work is you've got your flow return here, that'll go into your central heating system. So what you can do is you can isolate underneath the boiler, and then this will go round all your heating, all your heating system. So if you've got ten rads for instance, then you can flush round all your ten rads. So normally what I'd do is I'd open all the radiators, so go round all your radiators in house, I'd open them all, and then I'd put your chemicals in and I'd flush it round. And then once you've flushed it all round you can then go do the radiators individually. So how you'd do it then is just do them one at a time. So flush one rad, go turn the next rad on, and then turn the last rad off. So you've just always got one rad open at the same time.
    So it's coming up a bit now, its temperature. We're just over 20 degrees. One thing I will say is it's always gonna be better to use the boiler if possible to get heat into the system. So if you can fire your old boiler up before, get all the heating system warm, then that would be much better and it'd make it a bit quicker. Because obviously doing it with an electric element i
    So I'm not gonna connect the MagnaCleanse in on this one, but quickly I'll just show you what I've done is I've made a male and male connection, and this side is inch and this side is three quarter. And then they will easily connect the MagnaCleanse to the power flush machine, because the hoses for the MagnaCleanse are one inch connections, and the connection for the power flushers use three

    I have a radiator which has I can't access and is shut all the time can I still do power flush with all the other radiators? Someone stupidly built shelves around it so I cannot get to the thermostatic valve to turn it on even if I wanted to.

    It's nice to see how a pro does things in another country. I'm from The States and most of the contractors here are still installing cast iron boilers. Didn't the installers use boiler chemicals when the systems were installed that they are plugging up? They sure install the boilers in tight places there. When did the use of condensing boilers become popular there?
    Thanks, Bill

    •  4 года назад

      In continental Europe condensing boilers have been used for many years,People in the U.K like to hide boilers don't know why in places where they can be awkward to service.

      @AllenHart999  6 лет назад +1

      Personally i dont believe its a DIY task, best to leave it to the people who know what they are doing, every job is different and needs different things doing. Thanks.

    • @normanboyes4983
      @normanboyes4983 6 лет назад +1

      Alan as I am sure you appreciate not all plumbers are equal, neither are all DIYers. Of course you need to be competent to complete any job correctly and anything less is a bodge. Personally after running big power plants and large chilled water systems I am very happy that my plumbing skills are more than satisfactory. The one thing that stands in the way of DIY in this sort of job is the kit and as long as it can be hired then there is no good reason why a perfectly good job could not be done.

    • @AllenHart999
      @AllenHart999  6 лет назад +3

      I do not really agree if i am totally honest, i have done hundreds and hundreds of powerflushes if not thousands and TBH i had done quite a lot of them before i understood what i was doing. A diyer might think they have done a good job but i would say in nearly all cases they do not and end up calling someone like me. When you take into account the cost of the machine and cost of the chemicals used i do not think customers get a bad deal. Many thanks.

      Hi Alan, I need a bit of advice (if you kindly would). My boiler has locked out due to flake build-up, I've been informed the boiler itself can be power flushed with chemicals. My concerns are; 1, is this going to be effective? 2, Is that amount of pressure running 'directly' through the boiler ok? 3, Is the flake likely to cause damage to the boiler parts, as its pushed through it? Thanks.

      Hi Alan, I’m glad you agree with push fit… I have been doing plumbing for more then six years and learned off qualified plumbers I had doing the the work for me. We work on extensions, lofts bathrooms and kitchen etc. I recently have taken an online course to become a gas safe engineer. And said to the guy that I’ve used speed fit and push fit etc and they brilliant. He was going mad about it and said if you use that your a plumber who never made it. I’m like you I have used them for years and never had one costumer complaint or calling us back as far as I know if you do them right they never go wrong. So Im glad you recommend them.

    Did you have the boiler flow and return isolated as I’ve seen some to say it’s better to not contaminate the heat exchanger with the sludge and all the boiler components. Is this right. ? If it’s like this. What’s the difference with flushing the system and descaling the boiler. Just the chemical. And calcification rather than Iron oxide sludge.

      Hi Allen your making that look too easy, why wait for tub to heat up then dump off after every rad ? Needs magnets to see what has been captured. Was keen to see difference of a heated flush opposed to un heated ?
      If boiler broke, using electric heat, why flush through boiler ? Connect straight onto F & R.

    FCH now called Longhurst HA do not do this for their Housing Association tenants the annual boiler service is just bare minimum. The gas engineer just want to get out quick so they can say they serviced more unit so more pay we customers tenants pay for it through bigger gas bills and when we have leaks they don't pay for the damage they have caused to our property. Tenants NEED TO KNOW this Info.

      Powerflush is a pump that flushes the system, You can use a powerflush by itself or with a magnacleanse, You can also just do a magnacleanse by itself, If you just do a magnacleanse it uses the pump in the boiler. What is needed verey much depends how bad the system is. Thanks for watching.

    In hot water here 3/4 in baseboards and a cast iron boiler typically run at 180° F, i purged so many, drained many, but nothing like that sludge you got out.. Remembering now baseboards i removed and replaced i never saw that build up you showed in your copper. Maybe its the additives they put in our water that keeps it out?? Great videos very informative

The i would put the chemicals in the existing boiler, let it run everything a couple days. Then return for r&r...
      Only i never heard anybody doing it.. It would be a nice add on sale for maybe extra 500$ but i couldn't bring myself to sit there all day charging for my time.. Definitely can't do either without proper knowledge.

      I scratch my head,because all the maintaining is crucial. If you hire a plumber all day to flush a system plus the chemicals you probably spent all the money you saved in the High Efficiency unit and more. Then when i hear the units are lasting 10 years or so.
      I'll take a freestanding cast iron boiler at 83 or so efficiency with very low maintenance.
      I couldn't bring myself to sell them knowing the cast iron boiler has a lifetime warranty on the core and it will last, compared to the limited life expectancy of these condensing wall hung boilers. A day of flushing is probably not less than 1250$ in my area, then the yearly maintenance. I don't see anyone saving a dime, then your time to be sitting with the plumber every year has to be worth something, no?
      I agree, it's not for me.. And i love tinkering, cleaning,handymen stuff.
