The thing is Ronnie O'Sullivan is leagues ahead of Mike Tyson when it comes to their own sports. Make Tyson dominated an extremely weak era and then spent the 90s losing to people who were actual all time greats. Ronnie on the other hand has basically always been the best player it just depends on if he turns up or not.
I just love the mind games in snooker. They're so subtle most people don't even know that's all they're watching.Murphy last night talking about how much he's learned from punditry was nothing more than mind games with those who think it's affecting him to do the punditry. Ronnie here spent 2 minutes 40 dancing around one main point : if I play my best, every main player in this tournament left in it will crumble..." Boxing is very direct. Trash talk. Open. That's good in its own way... but I just love snooker mind games for their subtlety and for the fact a lot of the commentators and fans don't seem to even realise when it's happening... it's all just a dance around something that's going to get in their opponent's head. You'll notice Ronnie often takes contrary stances. So if you say "I'm not going to worry" ... he"ll come out in an interview saying how 'worry is probably the main driving force behind my success.' If you come outing say you're going to "take your time, pick the right moments," he'll come out and say "you have to be ultra aggressive in this game to succeed." Two weeks later he'll change that to the exact opposite if he thinks it will faze his opponent. He hates been boxed into anything, and he's a master of unsettling people.
Brilliant take. Ronnie always had the subtleties of competition down a tee. He even mentioned in another interview that he'd keep an eye on his opponents body language during a game too. That competitive instinct is so hard to harness and keep a hold of in sports.
What he said is true, O'Sullivan won the titles he did early on in spite of himself, he's a freak, the best that's ever lived. There are players that are getting closer but still, if he plays his best he wins - it's as simple as that. Have a look at the scores in his World Championship winning run of 2022 - he played well & nobody really got close...
Some wandering why he did not mention Selby, but maybe he feels when he has been at his best Selby can't take it. Talking of Selby me personally and nothing against Mark, he has his fans and those who like the way he plays but for me I find it torturous to watch. The amount of time he takes, wandering around the table at times, the expression of doubt on a shot that is relatively straight forward, the pretending to comeback to the table on the opponents failed shot on a snooker and standing for ages as if he is thinking about it taking a shot but in reality he wants to torture his opponent before asking them to retake which is all fair game but man it tortures me watching it!
I agree with what you are saying I personally don't dislike Selby he has won 4 world titles and runner-up 2/3 dozens of raking tournaments. I can't watch him boring to watch and that's not me hating on him I just dislike the way he plays.
@@michaelleigh2076 mate nobody is doubting how good he is but I can’t watch him boring player takes for ever on every shot but doesn’t mean he isn’t a great player just not for me my opinion only not facts just opinions thanks.
@@mrbipolarmattyhoward6071 Even though Mark can go quite Ebdon-esque, and it's the worst kind of match-up for Ronnie. However, games against Ronnie bring out this extremely competitive side in Mark and the mindgames.
Surprising that Ronnie doesn't include Selby along with Higgins, and Hendry in the list of players who've been unflappable against him. Selby remains the only player to have defeated Ronnie in each of the Triple Crown finals!
At first I thought that too but Selby has a way to poison his game, trip him up with scrappy frames. So by definition of sorts Selby puts Ronnie is in B game mode so isn’t getting “everything he’s got”.
Ronnie doesn’t classify selbys game as the “right” way to play. Selby wins matches by grinding his opponents down with defense he’s not attacking and aggressive enough for Ronnie to put him in the hendry and higgens category

Ronnie is not afraid of Selby, but of his onerous game; he doesn't like this game, it annoys him. For example, I also can’t watch Mark’s game. Too boring!))
Same here. This is whats interesting about snooker, you get two players who have different styles so it stands to reason Ronnie would get impatient with a more tactical slower game.

Nah, he got over that in the 2020 WC Semi-Final, he just stopped playing Selby's game, Selby's a tremendous player, but O'Sullivan beats him when he plays well.
Awesome high praise for Higgins and Hendry. 👍
Absolutely love Ronnie O'Sullivan - always have always will. So glad he's through... can't wait to watch the semis.
Ronnie is probably one of the very few people in the world who can compare themselves to Mike Tyson publicly and not sound completely delusional 😅

He's absolutely the best cueist ever. And he's done it all on 12 foot tables. Still playing killer snooker
Ronnie is light years ahead of Mike Tyson
Love Mike but he overrated by casuals he's not top 5 based on who he beat and his prime was very short lived
Ali
Foreman
Holyfield
Lennox
Holmes
Or Lewis Hamilton :)

Almost 800 career centuries, and 22 ranking titles. the guy is an absolute genius and people need to start recognising what a genius mark selby is.
