You're my absolutely favorite boardgamer and channel ever. Your playthroughs and how-to-plays are undeniably the best. You taught me how to play A Feast for Odin and Teotihuacán, which is no small feat. Love your vids.

This game just clicked with me. Got it and played it and it didn’t disappoint! Really enjoy this kind of games. The theme on this one! Is fantastic

Thanks for the excellent rules tutorial. I watched playthroughs that "taught as they went", but they were ineffective for such a heavy game. This game is not for me, but I was interested in taking a look.

I find my personal tastes drifting further and further from heavy euros like this, but I also still really enjoy watching you teach and play them. Agreed with others that the art here is a bit muddy, but I think TTS actually works in the game’s favor in that regard - there isn’t any lighting or glare to account for and everything’s presented as clearly as possible. Looking forward to watching the playthrough!

Nice one. Looks like a pretty big and complex point salad. The objectives cards mechanic seems to be straight out of Marco Polo.

Looking forward to the playthrough Jon. Particularly because you said how much you're enjoying it! Do you own a physical copy? How does it look on the table?

Nope, I don't have a physical copy. I only have experience with the TTS mod.

What a curious theme. I'm not saying good or bad, but curious. Didn't see that coming.

It's certainly outside the standard euro theme group, yeah.

@@JonGetsGames More than that, it's bold to pick a religious/cultural theme like this. I'm not 100% that it draws me in particularly, but I applaud the effort and the exploration of something new.

Really enjoyed your discussion of the game on your podcast! Just curious if you've tried Trismegistus and how it compares? It sounds pretty similar (having never tried Golem).

    • @JonGetsGames
      @JonGetsGames  2 года назад +1

I have played Trismegistus once, you can hear my thoughts about it at the time here: ruclips.net/video/lRzPOwwZF9A/видео.html. Regarding a comparison, there are certainly some though overall I found Golem to be much easier to piece together combos and also to remember how everything worked.

@@JonGetsGames Thanks for the thoughtful response! That definitely increases my interest in Golem because Trismegistus was at the upper limit of my threshold for complexity tolerance. Really looking forward to trying it out!

Seems rather complicated but I have a feeling it'll all just click seeing it in action.

I wanted to ask something: When you do these "Rules Teach" video, could teaching them by playing a simple game with imaginary opponents, like how you teach the physical games on your channel, be an idea? It would almost be the same as what you do with your physical tutorials, but you'll be using TTS, and explaining the rules while playing through maybe 25-50% of said game on TTS could help us better understand some stuff, if that's option is there for improvement, since I can't tell how the camera angles are on TTS due to the limitations of your computer recording everything and TTS's built-in zoom features?
In summary, you can teach the rules by playing about 25% of said game (about half the length of what your regular tutorials videos end up being), with the rest showed off in the full game with you friends that is uploaded at a later time. Obviously, the "Rules Teach" playthrough would be half the length of your regular tutorials, since "Rules Teach" is followed up with the friends playthrough afterwards. (For example, if a full tutorial would show 4 rounds of a 8 round game, "Rules Teach" could show 2-3 rounds of it.)
Let me know if that idea could work in the future, and sorry if I repeated some thoughts as I was typing this comment. I think I might have said the same thing twice in this comment already, which I shouldn't have.

Honestly, I don't see myself doing this. The idea of these rules teach videos is to get people up to speed on the game so that if they want to watch the playthru video they'll know what is going on. So I try to keep these rules teaches as quick as possible (though so far it's been heavy games with significant rules teach times anyway) so that people can get into the playthru quickly. A tutorial style video for Golem, even showing 25% of the game, would end up being likely over an hour and it not only defeats the purpose of being a quicker way to get into the playthru, but also directly competes with the playthru in a way.
In addition to that, tutorials take significantly more time to record. If I was to have recorded this as a "learn while playing" video, the raw recording would very likely have taken a couple hours longer, and that all adds up.
I understand many people prefer the "learn while playing" style I've been honing for so many years, and this is why only some of my new videos are this new "teach only, then playthru only" style. There are still many tutorial style vids coming out each month, they just won't be happening as a teaching tool directly for a playthru.
That being said, sometimes I come back and do a playthru of a game I already covered as a tutorial (see Beyond the Sun and the upcoming Anno 1800), though I think it's unlikely I'd switch around and make a tutorial for a game I've already made a teach-only and playthru for. I hope this makes sense, and I'm sorry for the disappointing answer.

Art looks like the game is from 2000's, I just can't get over it. It would honestly and personally make me much more interested if it was a bit prettier/modern looking.

I think they were going for that vibe with the setting, though I feel some of the color and iconography choices could have been better here for playability.
