- I am here to tell you- you are doing acrylics wrong and you might not even know it. Let’s look at some of the most commonly made mistakes using acrylics and how we can achieve better results by avoiding them. From brushes, to mediums, to varnishes, we are going to hit all the big no-no’s of acrylic painting.

Water is a solvent for acrylics and theres nothing wrong in using it. It just has to not be abused, thats when the binder breaks down. For thinning paint water is perfect. For washes like watercolor water is no good because so much water would break down the binders unless you add some sort of glazing medium (more binder) to the mix.

Great video 😂 I love you mike 😂😂 . I think the biggest problem that artists make in acrylic is simply not accepting that it is ACRYLIC and NOT oils . So the expectations are wrong from the start and that leads to a lot of students becoming frustrated because they are always fighting against the medium . Rather than learning the personality and individual characteristics of the medium they want to force it to be something it’s not and then when it doesn’t work , blame the paint 😢

A few more tips:
1. Do not put wet painting in hot sun or car. It is the same effect as the hair dryer.
2. Always let a layer of paint completely dry before adding any new paint and especially do not try to correct something with a wet brush. Wait until it dries, then correct with a new layer. The water, or fresh paint over a layer of semi- dry paint will greatly disturb the process and you will end up with a paint hole you may not want and it is very difficult to get back to the original intention.
3. Blend while the paint layer is still wet. If you wait too long, it will dry. If it dries too soon, leave it alone and let it dry completely, then try again.

As a very new painter, I had to learn #2 the hard way (and even #3). Great additions.
All of the water no-no’s are exactly what I was told to do in a Fine Arts studio class! And we always used a hair dryer to speed up our process.
The biggest mistake "we" are making is that the manufacturers are not figuring out a way to keep acrylics completely open for six hours, without having a skin on the paint. Or even better yet, keep the paints open for twelve hours so that "tomorrow" we can put a second coat over today's work. I would come back to acrylics from oil painting if they would just figure this out. There... I got that off my chest. I feel better now.
The sta wet palette has helped me with that. I'll open it after a few days and it's still wet. It's fantastic.
My masterson sta wet palette has had paint on it for 7 weeks. I had back surgery and went back to clean it and put new paper and found that my liquitex basics was still perfect, a bit softer consistency, but still in great condition. I was surprised, I really have good luck with it. Now when I’m using it with it open, I still do have to mist it.
When I am saying open, I am really meaning that I wish we could blend the paints for up to at least six hours without having to use any medium; including water, to keep them fresh. Thanks for the tip ladies on using a wet pallet. I have one too. :)

Have you tried Golden Open acrylics? they stay open for a while longer.

That's funny! Cleaning brushes is important. I even take cleaning breaks during a long painting session.
According to Golden Acrylic Color you can use water to thin acrylic paint. I know many artists who use water, some up to 50-60% with no problem. You should use an isolation coat or some varnish upon completion and everything will stay intact.

I have tried mediums but usually go back to water. Painting with acrylics for many years. I understand what you’re saying about water but I use it and it may not be ideal for certain reasons but it works for me. I use mainly Golden Heavy Body acrylics. I don’t use a hairdryer on them tho! :)

I have a bad habit of leaving my brushes in water... sometimes for days... very few of my brushes have any paint left on the handles and many of them have actually warped to fit the shape of my hand from using them when wet... I kind of like it actually... I use cheap brushes tho and have like idk 40 or 50 of them and while I do of course have my few favorites, I'm not attached to any of them and when the edges get frayed and don't make a nice thin crisp line, I pop on down to Walmart and grab a new pack or two. The old frayed ones are definitely still useful tho... you can cut out some sections of bristles to create a brush that make multiple little lines or random rough dots ... great for grass or foliage/bushes etc. I have even been known to purposefully let a small amount of paint dry on a brush to make super stiff bristles for specific applications.

I really do all this. I think a lot of people can’t quite understand the hair blower is only drying the surface. Then they go ahead and put another layer on top of it. What that’s doing is stopping the layers under the first layer from hardening. Just because it’s dry to the touch doesn’t mean it’s dry all the way through. Anything acrylic hast to come to a complete hardening before you put anything on top of it. It can take up to three weeks for it to completely harden for pour paintings. If you don’t wait for it to completely dry it will sweat underneath and crack.

What about using a hair dryer from the other side (i.e. applying to the back side of the canvas, so that the heat hits the innermost layer of paint first?
Or, using a hair dryer on cold?
Should using a fan to accelerate drying be avoided as well?
Nothing can match the texture I get from using an natural hog hair bristle brush. They hold a load of paint better they any synthetic brush. I do use synthetic brushes for crisp lines and highlights and for smooth texture. There's nothing wrong in using water as your medium either. You use very small drops to thin down your acrylics to help them flow for doing lines and tree limbs. I have been following Jerry Yarnell for twenty years using his methods for painting with acrylics and his Professional Gallery paintings are of the highest quality. Oh and yes I do buy a lot of my products from Jerry's as well, I just couldn't agree with a few points in this episode, I'd rather be honest then brown nose.😊

Thanks for making me smile today...its rainy and gloomy outside...just want to say that many of the acrylic paints and mediums I use, actually say to thin with water...specifically, right on the container. Now I know that its been said that we should not add more than 20% water to acrylic mediums or paint, so I am wonder where you get the idea of absolutely no water mixed with acrylics?
Jacqueline Kinsey Water is free. Acrylic mediums are not. Mikey works for Jerry’s Arterama.
Can you suggest a clear medium to dilute your paint to keep it from drying too quickly? I noticed you used one and said 'acrylic medium 1' and you said Lukas, but I can't find that on the site to buy.

What is the difference between using water on your brush to thin your paint or using a misting bottle on your paint ? You are still using water in your paint.

Thank you, I agree .Discovered the hard way after paying too much for fine camel hair brush, And yes leaving a brush in H2O need to bee like a costly instrument. I do use a cover over the brush tip, after my cat, chewed on the tips.

Thing is thought when ur varnishing an acrylic painting ur supposed to put an isolation coat first to stop the varnish coming in contact with the actual paint surface. The isolation coat recommended by golden is their gel medium with some water in it. That way the acrylic uv varnish u put on top can be removed with ammonia or something without harming the painting

really funny and I agree with everything that you are saying. I used to do most of those things when I started painting.
I'm trying to learn acrylic pouring and my pieces look fine until they dry - then the paint splits and cracks. What can I do to prevent cracking?
Sta-Wet palette keeps the paint moist if you’re taking a break, lasts a long time.
The palette wetting spray is exactly that and it's pretty good but the chamber clogs up after a while. If anyone knows how to help that please let me know. You guys are awesome thank you for these tips!!
I actually had to re-rebottle it bc of this issue so now - I turn over the bottle and dip the spray nozzle in my water and swish it, then wipe and re-lid it immediately --- - every time I use it. So far so good.
I have gloss varnish could i use that instead of water

I'm a beginner and when I brush my paint I see that my paint is see through and I'm trying to make it look opaque clear... is it because I'm not using water or am using water
I made the mistake of using safflower oil on my acrylic painting thinking it was varnish. Still tacky after 3 weeks when I realized my mistake. Can I remove it without damaging paint.
Jerry's carries a product line called "Yes!" stretched canvas and panels. These are awwwwwwwwwwweesome! They're manufactured in China, sadly, but nevertheless they are my new favorite canvas brand. Love, love, love them.
I use synthetic brushes because I don't like using animal products. I have a couple of brushes that are natural hair, because I got them from a Course I took years ago.
I AM guilty of leaving my brushes in water too long... and it cracks and messes up the handles... a lot. AND, I've had to glue the feral back onto many handles. (I tend to be very hard on my brushes).
And I am guilty of using water 'as a medium"... and I have experienced some bad effects from doing it. (I actually ruined a painting before, by using too much water). (and it's because of the fast drying that I do it). I love my Sta Wet palette to help with that. and I do the misting thing, too, probably not often enough, though.
hmmm. ok... in my art journal I often use my heat gun with acrylic paints... but... on a canvas painting I don't tend to. I usually let it air dry.
I'm in Canada, so shipping would be really expensive for Jerry's orders. but if I ever go to the USA, I'll want to visit a Jerry's Artarama Store.

Totally agree- I avoid real hair brushes both for painting and my cosmetics! Cruelty free is the way to go. :-)
I wish there was a Jerry's in Canada, im very limited mainly to Golden and Liquitex for professional acrylics :( next trip to the states im stocking up lol

Sometimes you drive me crazy but this particular video is very helpful. My gripe with you is that it seems you're trying to be more over the top than just imparting knowledge. And you don't need to do that because you're a cool guy. Anyway, thanks for this great video.
Is there a way to avoid the problems physical caused by hanging over an acrylic painting for hours. Every time I do it, it takes me a day sometimes two to be ok to paint again...my eyes go bad, I don't breath so well...I just generally feel off. I try to paint in free air, but it doesn't seem to help..

“Don’t leave brushes in water” every day of my life that plays in my head while my brushes soak in water 😂 thinking of the wood splitting etc. I am better now .. but still do leave it sometimes. I do know how to clean them correctly now tho !! 😂😂😂😂
Greta tips, but lots of pro commercial artists use water as a medium, mainly for glazing, so i'm not sure this is a good example - also the stay wet palettes are specifically designed to extend paint by using water - am I missing something?

Okay I get the hair dryer thing... Totally!! I admit I do it for my tutorials, when I'm speeding through a demo any way however I do recommend letting it air dry. And if using one not to scorch it and keep in mind it is a PLASTIC.
so in that, should I just avoid it altogether? Bc then perhaps I should look into watercolor lol. Thanks always!
That's what I figured, "learning" paintings, go ahead with the hair dyer, but if it's a "keeper" just be patient
A hair dryer should be fine with watercolors. I've never had any issues, and it makes the process go by much faster lol.
How about people who use a dryer for pour medium? Like in giving it a bloom affect

I think people sometimes don’t have experience with color composition. They mix colors and create mud!

Sometimes you want the acrylic to dry quickly so you can add more paint over it. Some times you don't have time to wait a day before you can add paint. You can add water to acrylic so that you can do thin washes as long as the finished painting is sealed. The sealing of the painting keeps it preserved and keeps the paint from flaking off.
I would love more info to slow drying time !

I see hair dryers used quickly on acrylic pours to blow paint "blooms" and develop cells: is that creating a piece of art that will crack and peel?

I had a cat years ago that was a jerk, like cats are. My mother had a decorative fish bowl with floating plastic fish, and of course he liked to drink out of it and mess with the fish. My mother hated it. She purchased a water gun and would spray him when he messed with the bowl. Being the jerk he was he would wait until he thought she wasn't looking, they would literally give each other the side eye, and he'd sneak a drink and run away before she had time to shoot the water gun.

I've heard that golden claims their paints CAN be diluted with water because it is so loaded with pigment. So some artists reckon it would be okay to spray water on their paintings for dribbling effects...

if acrylics are extremely thin like watercolor washes absorbed into watercolor paper, thinned with water only for watercolor paper, could be safely airbrush dried. airbrush medium would be better though as it is like skim milk consistency

when u plastic wrap ur paint and then put it in the frezzer when u take it out after not alot of paint will be stuck to the plastic wrap, just let the paint thaw out and it's ready to go and can reuse the plastic wrap
Just WOW 😳 you are all over the place! And many artist use hairdryers ( art Sherpa color felks) so yeah low heat move around or no heat btw... ALSO water will eventually break down your paint! So YOU NEED wet pallet spray or gel and water mixture.... of many sorts I think 🤔 you need to get more info just saying and be more organized but your brush stuff was spot on....
