I like your introductions. They are getting to be a little like the Monty Python "It's......the Narrowboat that James Built!" One thing that is addictive about your videos is that first impressions of the boat itself are fading because the viewer can't help but see the beauty that is emerging as you work on it.
Looking good. If you think that tunnel is cold just wait till you go through Blisworth it's also very, very wet and at full tilt and empty of other boats it takes at least 25 minutes!
Hi James I noticed the gas locker is on the roof I personally would not fit it up there it will make it very hard to get the bottles up there🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great opening. And I can't believe I just watched a video of a bloke "painting" a boat. My lass thinks I'm bonkers. If the next video is of showing your paint dry, then I'd probably watch that too.
Your problem is that even in good drying conditions, bitumen is one of the slower drying coatings. It can feel completely dry to the touch & yet not have cured enough to recoat. You haven't done any real harm but it is essentially a heavy single coat, as the solvents in your second coat re-liven the first as it wasn't fully cured. Nice job though it looked great, it'll be interesting seeing the final colour scheme after watching all these months.👍👍👍
Glad to see the progress on this boat 😀 been keeping up to date regularly, coming on very nicely indeed! The underside of the boat looks nearly brand new again now with the blacking on
I’ve just realised that as part of my licence I am able to have a tender to my boat and keep always within line of sight!! this has just got an awful lot more fun !!!!
it’s not that well planned to be honest - I asked dad after I did the first coat to see if he could do the song. an hour later there it was - perfect 👍🏼
Did you pootle all the way down there, plonk a camera down then pootle all the way back up the tunnel, then pootle back again to do the shot, then pootle back again to pick the camera up?
I've lost count, is that four or five coats of blacking? ;-) I thought you were painting the top band (12"?) blue, then I saw you roll on some bittermen(sp?) on it and realized it was a reflection of the sky. ;-D
James, another great vid! why is there a hole at the top of the rudder? is it to stop the rudder jamming under the boat if an underwater obstruction forced it to the side (suppose this would stop the tiller pushing the boatman over the side if it moved suddenly) ? or a lifting eye to take the weight of the rudder while the bottom bearing is replaced?
Sorry if this is a daft question or if it's been asked before... What about under the boat? I've watched all your videos in order up until now without wondering it.
I'm confused. You spend all the time and paint on the hull sides and nothing on the sole plate ( bottom plate ), which in any case, because your are sitting on chocks so low you cannot in any case, get good access to. Yes, the bottom is going to get scoured to hell in those shallow canal waters, so is the idea to sacrifice the plate thickness for protection or what? I am really surprised that NB's are not built with some sort of sacrificial protective layer considering the galvanic pitting seen on the metalwork after sitting in what essentially is a very low conductive environment. It would save on all that ugly arse over-plating and by doing so, adding tons of weight. Also painting the "machinery space" in black and in a bitumen product is so wrong on so many levels. Being an ex RN Engineer who spent many years painting just about everything in the machinery spaces with every type of paint, my SPO or Chief would have beaten me near to death for that. To have taken the time to have cleaned the surface back to metal and applied a proper paint scheme seems obligatory and although some seem to accept a grey shade of bilge colour, there is only one real choice. White, White, White. Sees the slightest leak immediately. Black is near to useless, hiding everything. However, good luck and am enjoying the videos seeing as you doing this, on what seems a learning curve, every day,
What other tune could you have had? I hate to be an arse, (not really), but why not move the paint tray as you go? Silly sausage! It looks a hundred times better. Take care, mate.
It’s heavily bitumened on the inside which is where the rust occurs on the bottom plate. The reason why hardly any corrosion occurs on the bottom plate is because it comes into contact with hardly any oxygen - unlike the sides which have air/water/metal mix in varying amounts
Again no guard on the grinder, no goggles at first and the cable still rolled on to the reel. Don’t you ever read the instructions do’s and don’ts After the other day I would have thought you might wear the proper PPE, and no gloves again.
This video is like watching paint dry... :) Are you planning on getting your skin fittings in while you're still out of the water by the way? Also, what news about the gas? Best of luck finishing what you can while on dry land!
Paint it black - Priceless and well played dad, too. Looking forward to the launch. Good luck.
Loved the 'Paint it Black' soundtrack. Nice one :-)

Oh wow what a lovely thing to say - thanks Peter
Hi James with the blacking on it the boat looks fantastic. Great job and you are working hard at the project. Keith & Helen Melbourne Auzz.
Great job James.. Looking top dollar mate 👍🏼
Haha the skull and cross bones on the outboard 👍🏻👍🏻 Cpt. Sloe hand.
Ray Ban safety glasses and Fender t shirt, you are a rock star James !!!!!
Well I’m certainly not a health and safety manager
Blacking looks awesome James, well done! 😎😉👍👌
Oh, she is looking better and better.
Fair play to you James engine bay looks really good you’ve inspired me to get into my engine and do mine 👍
During the intro I was waiting for that woman to pick up the "abandoned" camera 😂 Nice to take advantage of some good weather
Not one person for an hour - I push the red button and she appears in a bright white coat - stomping through the f’ing leaves !!!!!
I'll bet you're proud of that job James . It looks really well .
Thanks for that 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Well done on your fitness tip whilst blacking walking back and forth to the tray is a good one 😀
Isn't it remarkable how the change in the light, and the hint of spring, creates more energy? Well done with all that you have achieved.
What I loved is how the silhouette of the trees moved across the boat slowly whilst everything else was whizzing around.
You smashed it ... she looks beautiful really coming together ... stay safe 🙏
Cheers me dear
Looking good. If you think that tunnel is cold just wait till you go through Blisworth it's also very, very wet and at full tilt and empty of other boats it takes at least 25 minutes!
Well done James. Nice upload. Soon be on the cut. Stay safe
Cheers my friend - you too 👍🏼
Boats looking great!
Cheers 👍🏼
Hi James I noticed the gas locker is on the roof I personally would not fit it up there it will make it very hard to get the bottles up there🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Now that’s the kind of advice I need - top man
Great opening. And I can't believe I just watched a video of a bloke "painting" a boat. My lass thinks I'm bonkers. If the next video is of showing your paint dry, then I'd probably watch that too.
I’ve done the same. Watched someone derust a gas locker many times. We’re all bonkers !!
I’ll spare you the drying
Evening James. That hull is looking good and ready for its dip in the water 🤣 Good days work 👍🏻 Cheers Stevie.
Let’s hope so matey - not long now

I totally agree - not 2 separate coats - more like one fat one
Lol. Captain and his dingy. She’s looking Bristol Fashion now mate.
It's almost looking like a new boat no doubt when you paint the top half eventually she, ll be looking shipnshape in Bristol fashion your nearly there
James your just a big kid haha keep it up mate 👍
Thank you pal 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Glad to see the progress on this boat 😀 been keeping up to date regularly, coming on very nicely indeed! The underside of the boat looks nearly brand new again now with the blacking on
Cheers for that, does look a damn sight better
Good intro, but the rest of the video was exciting as watching paint dry 🤣
Had to be said
Good choice of music :)
Looks beautiful!! Is that a Job done🎉🎉
Still using a grinder with no guard on it.
I lost the top of my finger doing exactly the same job
You could have saved yourself a lot of time and money if you just bought a dingy to putt around in. You seem to have a lot of fun with it. Stay safe
I’ve just realised that as part of my licence I am able to have a tender to my boat and keep always within line of sight!! this has just got an awful lot more fun !!!!
Offer the 8hrs to the BBC, they like slow TV.
Just one beer? I’ve had several after cleaning my allotment in this glorious weather.
11.57 .... thats timelaps for you ... wheres you cooking or planning 🤔 Im excited for launch day 🙂
Love the music paint it black lol
I believe that James performed it as well.
Actually it was my dad who performed that one - happy to be sharing the cash with Mick and Keith 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
@James Built: Do you perform any of the BG music?
@@ou81aswell i did on some of the early vids but all this stuff is done by my dad
@James Built: It's a family affair!
GLOVES MARRA, FINGERS DON'T GROW BACK ON.
The music with the painting lol this channel is not just thrown together lmao
it’s not that well planned to be honest - I asked dad after I did the first coat to see if he could do the song. an hour later there it was - perfect 👍🏼
@@TheNarrowboatThatJamesBuilt That's what dads are for
Wow that hull looks fantastic until the first few locks then you just give up lol. Does your yard sell essentials. I need stuff.
Yes I’ve seen how you enter a lock - haha!!
Yes they sell most bits - what do you need ? They even have only fools and horses dvds !!
Did you pootle all the way down there, plonk a camera down then pootle all the way back up the tunnel, then pootle back again to do the shot, then pootle back again to pick the camera up?
It was a bit of a faff - put it like that
She goes in the water tomorrow, right? Best of luck! Great job so far 👌🏼
Tuesday, but yeah thanks 👍🏼
enjoy the beer
I did - a few times
I've lost count, is that four or five coats of blacking? ;-)
I thought you were painting the top band (12"?) blue, then I saw you roll on some bittermen(sp?) on it and realized it was a reflection of the sky. ;-D
Just the hull for the moment - top bits soon though
James, another great vid! why is there a hole at the top of the rudder? is it to stop the rudder jamming under the boat if an underwater obstruction forced it to the side (suppose this would stop the tiller pushing the boatman over the side if it moved suddenly) ? or a lifting eye to take the weight of the rudder while the bottom bearing is replaced?
The hole in the rudder is indeed for a rope should you need to remove the rudder whilst in the watet
Good question - thanks for answering Big 👍🏼
you messin around on the canal again
Cant help it mate
Sorry if this is a daft question or if it's been asked before... What about under the boat? I've watched all your videos in order up until now without wondering it.
Pity you used time lapse. Looking like someone actually owns and loves the boat at last.
Yep - she’s loved. I do have the raw footage of 8hrs of me painting the boat black - you’re more than welcome to it 🤣🤣🤣
ha ha ha ha!....... class
Nice
Cheers bud 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Was that paint tray heavy James? I just wanted why you couldn’t pick it up and kept walking back and forth 😂
Now I know why my back aches somewhat !!

Take care, mate.
Spot on, mate ... was screaming at him to move the paint tray!!
I’m not too sure. I thought there’s no point really as I’d have to keep moving anyway
Nice job, but what with the bottom of the boat, wear the steel plate is thinnest in your case?
It’s heavily bitumened on the inside which is where the rust occurs on the bottom plate. The reason why hardly any corrosion occurs on the bottom plate is because it comes into contact with hardly any oxygen - unlike the sides which have air/water/metal mix in varying amounts
Appropriate music for blacking the bottom.
It was the only choice really
👍👌🇨🇦❤
💙👊😎

Yep - skin fittings in water. Gas hopefully on Friday
