It is but it helps the branding, in an era where you can't even see them perform this type of stuff helps your core core audience feel like they know you.
I like the fact you take ur time writing a song, you obviously have the talent to scream/sing to anything how fast you want but to create a masterpiece takes time and patience and that is why every song spiritbox has released this year is amazing.
Wait, they weren't as big elsewhere as they are in Canada? Man, they were my very first intro to like screamo stuff. I still remember the first time I saw the video for Counterparts when I was like, 12 or 13, on late night Much Music.
that was really inspiring actually! something as simple as just using a word generator to come up with a starting point is such a good idea. Loved the full song on gear gods!
This is awesome. It takes guts to be vulnerable enough to let people into this process. She just does it so willingly and unashamedly. This is affirming for me and my vocal writing process personally, but I’m sure there are others out there who have watched this who are empowered and affirmed by this as well.
You know what ? I'd love to see Courtney try to make a Deathcore song, like a bonus track on their future album ? I liked when she tried different vocals in this video, especially the deathcore ones !
I can't even describe how awesome this was to see someone in their creational (yeah it's not a word I know) element. You'd be so damn vulnerable and exposed doing all that kinda thing on camera. I know I could never do that. What an inspiration.....keep up the good work y'all! Victoria represent!
This is why she is one of my favorite vocalists I have the same exact process and I thought I was lazy in doing it in that fashion but she validated the process and I'm happy to see this
I'm so glad you recorded your side of that Courtney! Very cool piece. Now I more fully understand how you and Michael write so well together. Definitely an interesting way to write, by humming a tune and finding appropriate lyrics afterwards.
I love how she's just so genuine and not embarrassed by the process by which she does things. I've never seen this before and always wondered how this whole process of putting a song together goes. I'm sure it's different with other bands. They do what works for them. This is just cool to see. I feel like I'm in the band. 🤘🏻
Yes , yes it is.. but take the patience spiritbox has with creating songs and apply it to waiting for the songs :) I CANNOT WAIT either but im okay with waiting because once it comes out I'm gonna play every single song until I find the favorites and then the favorites until I find that one that grew on me , and then the singles again until the album fades out. It happens to me with all music. Something like that at least
Nice. Found this after the Gear Gods video -- fun to see the different approaches and how you go to the end product. Also, fucking LOVE Spirit Box, so that was a rad little Easter egg.
Seeing the process was awesome. I really enjoyed that. I think seeing videos like this could really help people who might feel something blocking them from writing music. To be able to see the process might make it less intimidating. So if you're one of those people, you've seen the process, now go! Go be creative and make music for the world! XD
That's usually how I start my songs too! I literally freestyle gibberish, and then suddenly a word or phrase will make itself known, and that's when all the other pieces start to fit, and I can really start thinking about concepts and how to build around those corner stones I've found. Really cool to see Courtney do the same thing. She's so good!
It’s awesome to see how artist write their songs. I love that Metallica does this which the last few albums. But this takes it a step further and shows the vocal aspects from step 1. Super helpful for someone that may get discouraged or swamp with starting a task like this.
Courtney is amazing. One of the best vocalists in music, period. On a different note, does she actually track the vocals off-axis/sideways with the SM7b? Or was she just getting ideas down to officially track later?
@@ZepyhrLightNot sure why I feel the need to respond but apparently I am... I wasn't talking about this song. You could have gotten that from my comment specifically talking about "Michael" Stringer... Her husband, and the guitarist and music writer of Spiritbox. He always throws in a badass guitar breakdown in their tracks. Since Courtney herself has stated in a few interviews she doesn't know how to do guttural sounds. During her process of writing the lyrics for this song, she got kinda close and said "oh, that sounds cool". Hence my comment of keep working on it, that would go good with Michael's breakdowns.
@@MechanicalPeanut ohhhhhhhhhhh duh 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 for some reason I thought Michael was Trevor. Mr Stringer himself ay. Lowkey isn't she gutterally screaming in holy roller ?
@@ZepyhrLight No worries, sorry just seemed like you were being trollish. Also, not quite. Courtney has some nice lows in "Holy Roller" but no gutturals. In Ryo's version he adds one or two. Courtney says she's never been able to do them. Up until a month ago she thought she still had vocal chord injuries caused from not screaming properly when she started touring with IWABO. Now that she got the green light from her Otolaryngologist that they have FULLY HEALED, I'm hoping she fells comfortable enough to experiment and add to her already amazing vocal repertoire. Judging by her new live recordings for XM's liquid metal virtual concert ( videos yet to be publicly released so watch for them, its amazing!), she may be doing just that! They sounds so friggin good, just when I thought she couldn't sound any better they drop these easter eggs in their Patreon!
Your process is a LOT more complicated than mine. 😂😂😂 I literally just shut off all distractions, open a TextEdit file on my make, bring up a rhyme generator, theeeeen about an hour later...recording time. And I can’t eveeer track vocals sitting down. 😅 my diaphragm doesn’t cooperate like that. 😂
You could use random data from The Global Consciousness Project generators or something like that to get rnd() values and make music out of it... hell, I think Mickey Hart started the thing with using pulsars for polyrhythmic stuff... I don't know if he did it first, but if I'm not completely garble-effed up in my mnemonic system by now I seem to remember seeing him working on a project involving pulsars and neutron star rates.

I never realized how soothing her speaking voice is. I could fall asleep just hearing her talk 💤😴🥱
In an alternate universe, i picture Courtney being a total mom and just, speaking me to sleep. Ngl, she's the perfect mother.
THis takes guts to put on the interenet. I just imagine this is a very personal thing for most artist but maybe Im wrong.

I think Nik Nokturnal and Courtney could create a banger.
