Just to say... I have the gs645s and as much as I'm sure the bellows are cool. Just having the camera ready to shoot at all times is also cool and the way you can bridge the shutter and aperture dials with your thumb to adjust both while maintaining the same exposure is super handy. And obviously the feel the lens gives the image is really striking
I got one, was told that the bellows were free from light leaks. Alas it was not so, the bellows were full of pin holes. Had to take the camera to a camera repair shop in Philly to have the Bellows replaced. What I found out is that the original bellows the Fuji used were not of high quality. I’m having the bellows replaced and should last another 40 years. So be aware of the bellows when buying another one.
I bought my GS645 for $40 bucks with problems with the shutter. All it needed was a clean and lube. I replaced the bellows while I was in there. The bellows was like $60 or $70 and the very specialty (and nessesary) 3M 850 1in Polyester Film Tape was $15. Has been holding up for a few years putting many rolls of film through and I don't hesitate to rely on it. They are out there for cheap if you look deep.
Already had the chance to listen to all released podcast episodes... we really need more of this, I'll certainly be listening to them all over again when I'm out shooting.
I've owned two GS645 cameras plus a GS645W. The first GS645 was stolen; I still have the second. I replaced the bellows on both. Fuji used a plastic material of cover the bellows. It dried and started cracking within 10 years or so. If you buy one now, assume the bellows will have to be replaced, about $125, unless seller can prove the job has been done. Extraordinarily sharp lens. Otherwise., it is no more delicate than any other folder camera. I've not heard of any common problems with the film advance or meter electronics. I keep mine as a backup to my GA645Zi, which is very dependent on its electrics.
hi kyle, thank you for putting out your work. these videos are really more than dull gear reviews and really do have some soul. I'm excited about the podcast. Keep up and stay healthy. I'd love to be talking to you personally one day. All the best from south Germany. Dominik.
I got one in mint condition, but with a leaking bellows. I got a new bellows from eBay and replaced the damaged one. There are detailed instructions online which will lead you through this step-by-step. Little tricky, but definitely doable..Rangefinder adjustment can be done by turning 2 screws under the flash mount. I am super happy with this compact little camera that will definitely be comming along on my next trip. Cheers!
Hey Kyle, new subscriber here! Loving all of your content. Just picked up a Contax RTS II and a few CZ lenses so I'm super excited to start my journey into film photography. Your vids have been giving me so much inspiration!!! Keep up a great work & stay safe!
Not a comprehensive review. All three of the GS models use the same body shell and film advance mechanism. These cameras are now 40 years old, and they never get serviced unless they break down, so I'll extend a "what did you expect" to Kyle's comments on "fragility". The pros of the folder, GS645, are light weight, compact size, and incredibly fine lens. Cons are bellows (the original bellows material was plastic and just cracked after a few years; need for its replacement is a given), dim viewfinder (2/3 of the light through the viewfinder is internally diverted to the internal light meter - same on all GS models), and a tendency for the cable connecting the body shutter release to the shutter to start sticking if not serviced every decade or so. The ring controls on the lens barrel (shutter, aperture, focus, and ISO setting) are a bit tight for some tastes. Folders are unfamiliar to users these days, and the GS645 is less strange in operation than most of the folders from the 1930s - 1950s. People seem to either quickly grow to love 'em or hate 'em. IMO, think of it as the ultimate travel camera. Day to day usage - not so much.
I had similar issues with the GS , slight drop from a bag of the camera and it seized up. Bag was already on the floor so it wasn't a big drop. Really enjoyed gigapixel ai. Bought a license. I have a Kodak f135+ which has lovely Kodak copiurs in its scans but they are quite small pixels wise.
Just love the common desk lamp instead of "mandatory" RGB youtube LED light in background. I'd really appreciate more in-depth introduction to the Fujifilm Fuji(ca) G*645* family. They all seems to me quit same but different in the same time.
I bouht myGS645 cheaply with light leaks and installed new bellows myself. I havent really even used my 35mm cameras since that, as the camera is smaller than a 35mm rangefinder when folded.
The 645 folding bellow is the weakest point. This makes the camera a rubbish! The lens is not stella! It is just crazily razor sharp, the image is just sharp, but the intracontrast details and color rendering in the shadows is not stella. Very contrasty but also too contrasty, which is a very common thing for that period for the Japanese lenses. Honestly. I had ordered one from JP, when it arrived I could literally see the holes in the bellow. They always appear in the corners of the bellow, in the weakest points of it. The JP seller offered refund but I decided NOT to order another one. Rubbish quality and I didn't want to risk my money on another investment of the same camera. I was fortunate enough to SEE those holes in the bellow when I tested for light leak after the camera is delivered. I ended up by NOT putting even 1 roll of film through it. TO AVOID WASTE.
I really have the hots for the GS645 Pro but for that money you can almost get a Pentax 645n with the 75 AF lens. SO I rather pay a little more and have the AF, the interchangeable lenses, the SLR and probably far less issues...
Absolutely love my dad's gs645. Never had an issue with the film advance or any of the internal mechanisms, just light leaks that we've had repaired. Rock solid now, I've probably put about 8 rolls of film through it since we got the bellows fixed. One of my all time favorites
Two thoughts... Gigapixel AI: my impression is that it works really well on images with mostly geometric, hard-edged details such as the one you chose for your sample print. For more organic shapes, I'm not so sure. You've suggested you'll probably bail on the software, but others considering it probably should take advantage of the trial period to make sure it works well with their subject types. Fujifilm GS645: I regularly use a 1950s Mamiya 6 Automat, which is still on its original bellows and has a bulletproof film-advance system. It's almost as if the industry forgot how to make folding cameras in the interim... weird, huh?
Nice, I do have issue with my gs645 pro, my shutter seems like not fire, I had send it to fix but yet to get any updates from them, but I really really love shooting with it and compact medium format for travel.
I'm really interested in getting a medium format rangefinder, right now i use a bronica s2a which is a 6x6 slr with a waist level finder, what would you say is the best entry level one to get :D Great video as per usual btw
I had issues with the winder on my gs645. I did drop it though. Got it fixed pretty cheaply and easily. It still has the original bellows though and I've never had light leak issues with them
In the searching for analogue culture to inject in my brain, i stumbled into your channel. I've been following your work for some months now and i can tell you without doubts that your are one of my favorite youtubers and photographers around here. Just love the vibe off your channel, photos and video editing. Thanks for inspire me and to inspire the others.
@@KyleMcDougall Now, around 5/22, it is hard to imagine that anyone with any sense of value would pay the current price of around $2,900 US for the GF670 used. Years ago when they were first announced, I planned to get one to go with my heavy Pentax 67 system for hiking, etc. When it came out, the sticker shock put me off. It never got cheaper, and after some time and use, reports of various failures (more than normal) have started adding up. With Fuji running away from warranty service in 2 years, and so few in service that parts are going to be a major repair problem in the future, I'd reluctantly pass this one, unless you are prepared to toss away $3k on a whim.
The GS645W is one I had been borrowing from my cousin off and on a few years back, but then he said it stopped working. I bought one for me on KEH but it stopped working after 2 rolls so I sent it back. Love them but again, so tempermental and all electronics is hard. Thanks for the video, and I love your work. Came across this RUclips channel two weeks back and now listening to the podcast as well. Kyle, love your work. I'd love to be considered for the giveaway, too. Cheers.
Thanks, Devon. I appreciate the support. And yeah, I love the size of the Fuji and the lens. Really wish that the camera was a bit more reliable, because it checks a lot of boxes.
I have the same camera GS645 professional, and experienced the same problem as you did. I was prepared for the bellows leaking. And it is relatively cheap and easy to replace. But the problem with film advance. That needs an experienced service man. I love how the pictures look, and will try to send it to evaluation for service. If you want another camera, go for one that has had a proper cla. Or send it directly to cla before you use it. Your videos are nice and informative, please make more :-)
Was blown away by Contact Sheet. It feels like something 99% Invisible/Radiotopia would produce in terms of quality. Super excited for future episodes!
I had a Fuji GS645S for about a year and got film advance issues with it since day one, very fragile line of cameras unfortunately. I would say to just stay away from it
I love my gs645 and haven't had any issues since purchasing a couple of years back. Haven't had any issues with light leaks or concerns about fragility (and it has taken a few hits without issue). There is also a certain comfort in knowing that even in the event that electronics fail or batteries die that I'll be able to keep shooting it for years to come. I hope you end up trying it out again.
I've owned two GS645 cameras (first one stolen) going back 35 years. I follow them fairly closely, and I've never seen or heard of the meter failing in one. (The electrics only involve the meter.) The bellows is a different matter. It is made of stiffened, folded cloth with a thin plastic cover, which provides weather resistance and makes it light tight. Like plastic used a lot in the photo industry in the 1970s, it was a poor choice. All (and I mean ALL) GS645 bellows plastic covers will crack and split in the fold corners if it is used, creating light leaks. If the camera has been stored for decades, the plastic will still deteriorate and crack open once the cameras is used a bit. If you buy a GS645 today, to avoid economic disappointment, budget about $125 for parts and labor to replace the bellows as part of your purchase decision, unless the seller can prove past bellows replacement. Best (maybe only) replacement bellows are made in England. (Do not use the cheaper Chinese bellows on ebay - they often do not fit when closed). Not really a DIY job, as the lens/rangefinder have to be realigned (culminated) once the new bellows is installed. A quick job if you have the right optical tools, and nearly impossible to do without.
I really enjoy your videos and pictures! Just picked up a very cheap (like new) RB67 Pro SD with grip and prism in Mexico City after watching your RB67 long-term review. Thanks!
Your problem with the Fuji sound very similar to the problem I had with my Fuji GS645S. Just like yours my camera had a film transport failure after just 2 rolls ,I’m about to send it of repair because it’s too nice a camera to leave and collect dust. If your are still looking for a folding 645 camera I can recommend the Zeiss super Ikonta 531 it is over 80 years old but mine is great and folded up it’s tiny (way smaller than your Fuji)
Hi Kyle, Been watching your channel from the start, and your roadtrip video was the single best analog photography video I've ever seen on RUclips. I'd love to have one of your prints on the wall. Greetings from Belgium. J.S.
Proud owner here... bellows replaced; light meter professionally fixed. Only issue: shutter button does not lock after last frame (a non-issue, really). Dislike: shutter noise (an awful "clack" sound)
Kyle, in the future, can you please do a review on the Fuji GW690? :), I just love the way you review cameras, or talk about stuff, it's easy to understand, and not boring :)
Great your reaching out to use . Film photography is bursting back to life now . I even have my 14 yr old son asking me questions and wanting a film camera. Think I'll give him my spare canon ae1.
Hi Kyle, I enjoyed this mini update video. Sorry to hear about your Fuji. I have subscribed to your new podcast and plan to start listening this weekend. I would love to win the print BTW.
It sounds like you ran into the same issue with the camera as I did. Even with a "near mint" body and perfect bellows--I only managed to get through 2 rolls of film before I had it lock up on me. Something between the film advance and the shutter release behind the folding mechanism wasn't connecting properly and made it impossible to use. The repair was going to cost as much as a "new" one. The happy ending is that I picked up 60mm cousin with the "roll cage" and it's been great. For me it was all about having something very portable with quality of medium format. 645 isn't huge but these fuji rangefinders are so easy to cary around.
I've heard those bellows are quite fragile and they are quite old now. Personally, I would go for another GS model or the newer GF670. That's a great looking print!
I have two GS645 Pro and both of them are non working. One has broken cord and the other has broken shutter. Fujinon lens is a real marvel, but the camera mechanics in parts of film advance, shutter cock mechanism and range finder are feeble and made of garbage. They look almost disposable. In particular when you compare them with Rollei or Hassel for example. I hope to fix the first, because I had already changed bellows and light seals of it, had adjusted the rangefinder and already got some quality shots. But then it started to miss frames because of loose cord and I disassembled it and now I'm in search of courage to try to replace the cord and put it all back together. :)
Had the same problem with mine along with a bellows covered of pinhole. Send it to repair shop in Paris. Went back as new, and the lens is stellar, since then it triggered a craving for rangefinder. Closing the camera is also tedious, which is probably the most dangerous for this delicate beast Thanks for sharing
I have the FUJI GS645S and its one of my favorite cameras. I find myself carrying it much more than my Mamiya rb6x7. I took it with m]e out to the mid north west USA for my last project and never had a single issue with it. Incredibly sharp lens, easy to use light meter and all around one of my favorite cameras. Only reason i bought the mamiya afterwards was so i could shoot portraits because i feel the Fuji is best suited for landscape and architecture photography.
Thanks for the video, I am looking again for a 645 after selling my mamiya and Bronica a while back, the Fuji 645 does not look as robust as my GSW690, might try another Mamiya....
Recently got a lot of 400h in 120 because it was just a fantastic offer. Happy to see your photos - makes me more excited about the film. You almost only hear people talking about Portra.
Kyle, who are you planning on including on your podcast? Will it be a mix of known and not so known photographers that are just slaying in the community? Side note, I do hope to catch that print. Man cave could really use other photographers work!
Listened to the first episode of the podcast today. Checked out Ian Howorth's work on instagram and was blown away by his use of color. I like how he labels himself as a documentary photographer who also makes pictures with "crap" lol
Probably a little late for you to make a decision but I also have a GS645. I knew going in that the bellows was likely going to need to be replaced. It's a known issue with the original bellows. Replacements are about $60 on eBay and the replacement process isn't too bad. A plus is that along with black you can also get bellows in blue or red. I would have liked blue but none were available at the time so I got red. Looks great. After about a year my camera also started to develop issues with the film advance. I downloaded the service manual and broke off what I now believe was a left hand threaded screw in the process of trying to fix it. I feared I had turned an expensive camera into a paper weight but I did eventually manage to replace the screw and doing a little cleaning and lubricating seems to have fixed the film advance problem. It's a finicky camera and even though everything seems to be functioning right now, I'd not be surprised at some point if the shutter decides to stick or just won't fire because something in the linkage didn't mate correctly when the camera was unfolded. Easy enough to fix but can be maddening. And you have to remember to set the focus at Infinity and advance the film or you can't fold the camera. On the other hand, it's tough to find a more compact medium format rangefinder with a meter and that great of a lens without spending a small fortune. Plus it's a pretty unique camera that takes great pictures. So I'm keeping it and will live with its quirks. But prices even for this model have gone sky high. I don't know that I could ever justify buying another one.
I own the Fuji GS645 Pro camera, after three rolls and three months the camera broke. Both the meter and the shutter mechanism began to fail. Been looking for someone that can repair the camera for 6 months so far no luck..
Fuji gs645 is wonderful camera with outstanding lens...but it just breaks down. It broke down even straight after it was released so Fuji stopped producing them after 2 years and released newer version with wider lens and without bellows. I don't own it anymore but it is still one of my favourite cameras out there.
Just to say... I have the gs645s and as much as I'm sure the bellows are cool. Just having the camera ready to shoot at all times is also cool and the way you can bridge the shutter and aperture dials with your thumb to adjust both while maintaining the same exposure is super handy. i love the fact that the fuji GS645 is in portrait mode. something super attractive about it!
My local camera store replaced the bellows in my GS and it’s been a great travel camera for 7 years now.
Nice print btw.
I got one, was told that the bellows were free from light leaks. Alas it was not so, the bellows were full of pin holes. Had to take the camera to a camera repair shop in Philly to have the Bellows replaced. What I found out is that the original bellows the Fuji used were not of high quality. You raised over $3k for charity wow that’s awesome!

been listening to contact sheet on spotify and finally i have a face to the voice
Thinking to buy one, is better search the 645 with 60or 75? thank's
All depends on which focal length you like shooting best! That being said, the 75, as tested here, is apparently more prone to issues.

Gutted to hear that the GS645Pro died! It’s my white whale camera and always on the lookout for one! Can’t wait to dive into the podcast!

I’d recommend GF670. Superb lens, bellow construction and modern AE function. Plus, Fuji still officially repairs and overhaul until 2024.

Good stuff, Kyle. Hate that your GS645 suffered the same fate as mine. I need to send mine in for repair. I love that little camera.

Not really a DIY job, as the lens/rangefinder have to be realigned (culminated) once the new bellows is installed. A quick job if you have the right optical tools, and nearly impossible to do without.
My comment for the print giveaway
I really enjoy your videos and pictures! Just picked up a very cheap (like new) RB67 Pro SD with grip and prism in Mexico City after watching your RB67 long-term review. Thanks!
Awesome! Enjoy!
I hope sir kyle would choose me for the free print
Your problem with the Fuji sound very similar to the problem I had with my Fuji GS645S.
Just like yours my camera had a film transport failure after just 2 rolls ,I’m about to send it of repair because it’s too nice a camera to leave and collect dust.
If your are still looking for a folding 645 camera I can recommend the Zeiss super Ikonta 531 it is over 80 years old but mine is great and folded up it’s tiny (way smaller than your Fuji)
Already own a 534/16, which I love!
Hi Kyle,
Been watching your channel from the start, and your roadtrip video was the single best analog photography video I've ever seen on RUclips.
I'd love to have one of your prints on the wall. Greetings from Belgium.
J.S.
I really appreciate that. Means alot!
Plaubel Makina 67 is a folder. You need to do a review on it.
Proud owner here... bellows replaced; light meter professionally fixed. Only issue: shutter button does not lock after last frame (a non-issue, really). Dislike: shutter noise (an awful "clack" sound)
Thanks for sharing your experience, Stefano.
Just got the GS645S and I'm pumped
Kyle, in the future, can you please do a review on the Fuji GW690? :), I just love the way you review cameras, or talk about stuff, it's easy to understand, and not boring :)
Definitely in the future plans. And thank you!
Great your reaching out to use . Film photography is bursting back to life now . I even have my 14 yr old son asking me questions and wanting a film camera. Think I'll give him my spare canon ae1.
I wan the print , I love ur photos a lot !!!!
Hi Kyle, I enjoyed this mini update video. Sorry to hear about your Fuji. I have subscribed to your new podcast and plan to start listening this weekend. I would love to win the print BTW.
Thanks for watching, Chris. Hope you enjoy the podcast!
Ahh, yeah, sounds similar. I was definitely disappointed. May check out the 60mm version next and see if I better luck .
I've heard those bellows are quite fragile and they are quite old now. Personally, I would go for another GS model or the newer GF670. That's a great looking print!
Thanks, John. And yeah, I may try the GS645S next.
Yeah, it's a shame that it seems to have these issues. I love the lens and the size of the camera.
Been following you ever since you did the Pentax 67 review! Love watching your content! (This print fits perfectly in my studio!)
Thanks for watching!
Amazing print! Thanks for all your videos and content
Thanks for watching.
Had the same problem with mine along with a bellows covered of pinhole.
Send it to repair shop in Paris.
Went back as new, and the lens is stellar, since then it triggered a craving for rangefinder.
Closing the camera is also tedious, which is probably the most dangerous for this delicate beast
Thanks for sharing
One Kyle McDougall print Please
Hi Kyle! A have a question. This camera can compite with the GA645 Pro? I want a rangefinder medium format
I would say yes, but it all depends on if you want something that is more automated, like the GA, or manual, like the GS.
Loving the videos. Shame about the GS645. I was looking forward to an in-depth review of that.
So was I!
Really enjoy your videos and your pace
I hope that everything have all with you and your family
Big hugs from Santo Domingo kyle
Thanks so much, Ivan!
Thanks for the video, I am looking again for a 645 after selling my mamiya and Bronica a while back, the Fuji 645 does not look as robust as my GSW690, might try another Mamiya....
shame about the camera but really been enjoying the podcast
Thank you!
Recently got a lot of 400h in 120 because it was just a fantastic offer. Happy to see your photos - makes me more excited about the film. You almost only hear people talking about Portra.
For sure. 400H is a nice film stock. Not my favourite, but I do like it.
Very good content in this channel. Congrats.
Loving your channel! Keep up the amazing content!
Thank you so much!
Kyle, who are you planning on including on your podcast? Will it be a mix of known and not so known photographers that are just slaying in the community? Side note, I do hope to catch that print. Man cave could really use other photographers work!
You got it, Weston. A mix of photographers, don't necessarily need to be 'known'. Anybody with interesting work and a story to tell.
Mine is working perfectly. I love it.
Really excited about the podcasts Kyle! Keep up the good work!
Awesome! Thank you!
Listened to the first episode of the podcast today. Checked out Ian Howorth's work on instagram and was blown away by his use of color. I like how he labels himself as a documentary photographer who also makes pictures with "crap" lol
Yep, Ian's work is fantastic.
Hi Kyle keep up the good work, I am following you from Trinidad & Tobago ,can you do a episode how to using Flash with Film camera .
Thank you. Don't have much experience using a flash, unfortunately.
Thank you for all the wonderful content as always. Looking forward to checking out the podcasts!
Thank you!
To celebrate my new RB67 (bought thanks to your review) I'd like to have this nice printing from you. Love your photographs !
Pick me please for the print 🙏🏼📷
always wanted to have one of your works on my wall :) you also inspired me to get my pentax 645n, thanks!
Congratulations on the amount collected on the fund raiser. Heading over to the podcast now.
Thank you, Dave.
I own the Fuji GS645 Pro camera, after three rolls and three months the camera broke. Both the meter and the shutter mechanism began to fail. Been looking for someone that can repair the camera for 6 months so far no luck..
Sorry to hear that. Seems that issues with this camera are common.
Great work. I enjoy your videos!
This is an exciting news, thanks for all the videos.
Thanks for watching!
The English weather and Provia film stock is probably like carrots and peas in a recipe.
Yep, I'd like to shoot some more of it. Liked what I saw from the few frames that turned out.
I absolutely love that Fuji GS645 lens and it's really a bummer that yours broke, I'm also looking for one but this doesn't leave me confident
Exciting without a new podcast.
Exciting without a new podcast.
Really nice episode Kyle. Off to check out the podcast with Matt Day. Cheers.
Thanks, Paul!

Fuji gs645 is wonderful camera with outstanding lens...but it just breaks down. It broke down even straight after it was released so Fuji stopped producing them after 2 years and released newer version with wider lens and without bellows. I don't own it anymore but it is still one of my favourite cameras out there.
Great video as usual, how are you finding living in the UK?
So far so good, although I'm looking forward to getting out to explore more.
I would love to hang your photo on my wall! Thanks always for the great videos!
I’ve been looking for a good all around medium format travel cam. Have you tried the Makina 67?
I haven't, but would love too. They're quite pricey, though.
