I’d recommend reacting to the official recap of 39 songs for Eurovision 2021
React to "Love Love, Peace Peace". You might not understand all the references, but it's one of the best ways to describe Eurovision for people who are not very familiar with it.
IMHO, apart from Greek and Cyprus giving each other 12 points, and Russia and Ukraine give each other zero points, politics doesn't play such a huge role. I think those "neighboring countries tend to vote for each other" is a cultural bias. Similar cultures also have a similar music taste, and an artist from Serbia for example is also known in Croatia but maybe not so much in Ireland.

But no one is intentionally trying to be mean to other countries (other then the mentioned examples).
And each year makes me realised that despite my country being the one having the most borders with different countries barely any of those ever vote for us.... 🤗

Eurovision it's like Christmas in may) I'm from Ukraine, and we love contest so much)
so 2 things Geography Now is really wrong about are
- Countries do want to win, yes it cost a lot of money to host but it also brings thousands of tourists to the country which is very beneficial for hotels, restaurants and etc. + you pay money to even join the contest so it would be kinda werid to send bad songs on purpose.
- The big 5 doesn't send bad songs to make up for being pre-qualified. The thing that because they are already in the final it causes them to have a different vision of what entry they want to send. as semi finalist they also need to make sure if they can qualify with the entry want to send. the big 5 also has disadvantage. the audience will hear their entry 1 time while the others are being performed twice (if they qualify). They pay the most so smaller countries can also compete with a lower participation money.

It is also a bit sad that most videos focus only on the humor entries. The 00's and early 10's was a weird time, but before and after that, there have been amazing entries and especially in the past 5 years or so, the general quality of the songs has gone up a lot.
The big 5 used to do really well until the semi finals got introduced, that's where it went downhill for all of them. None of them gets points unless they are up there among the favorites to win now.
@@alftuvik3820 I'd say that the semi finals have not much to do with it. If you check each countries respective places throughout the years (wiki has good ones, type "x in Eurovision"), then you will see that it depends on the country:
* Italy has been constantly very high even before semi finals, meaning they send quality songs that Europe likes
* The UK started to flop after mandatory native language requirement was taken out. And to be honest, in the past 10 years that I remember, none of their songs have stood out. Someone from the UK commented: we send what we think Europe likes not what Europe actually likes
* Placement for France started to get worse in the 90's meaning most likely the addition of new countries made it harder to stand out. And well, you need a good song as well and France seems to have had its ups and downs. This year was a really strong
* Germany has had ups and downs, but the only Big5 country with Italy to have won since the semis.
* Spain seems to be the only one who actually started to have issues when semi-finals were introduced, but there have not been standout songs
And you need songs stand out. A good song needs a combination of good lyrics (usually with meaning), great performance and good singers. If you want to win, you have to impress the diverse audience of Europe. By clinging to what only you like, will make it a bit hard. And it will also depend on how strong the competition is. If another country has a song others like more, then not much one can do about it. I would say that getting into the TOP10 nowadays is already a very high placement.

Italy is usually up in the top 10 due to the quality of the songs they send, the San Remo festival is serious business so that helps them avoid the disadvantage.
UK only had 1 real flop ever before the semi-finals, Jemini in 2003. The first time the language rule was removed in 1973 their lowest placement was 4th before it came back. When the rule was removed again in 1999, they had one really good result and three mid-low and one really bad result. Then the semi-finals came where UK has had only one, or maybe 2-4 songs that arguably have not been flops the past 17 or so years.
France did not really start doing worse in the 90s, sure 1996 and 1998-2000 were bad years for them, but they placed in the top 10 between 1990-1995 and 2001/02, they had more good results than bad, then came the semi finals where they started consistently getting poor results with a few exceptions.
Germany has always been a bit hit or miss, but mostly decent placements before the semi finals. After the semi finals they have been consistently low with only a few exceptions.
Spain usually had good to decent results before the semi finals with a few flops here and there, but now they haven't been above 20th since 2014.
I am not blaming any of them not winning on the semi finals, I do think they have an equal shot to win as everyone else. I'm only saying I think they would all consistently do a little better if they took part in the semi-finals.

as a european eurovision fan, that was a very underwhelming explanation. the esc is still so successful and celebrated because its weird, its full of cultural heritage, and its europop/eurodance, which is recognizably different than international/US-influenced mainstream. a few iconic acts include Verka Seducka - Dancing Lasha Tumbai, Stefan Raab - Wadde Hadde Dude Da, Lordi - Hardrock Hallelujah, while the winners are usually popballads or songs with more serious lyrics. theres plenty of video compilations of weird esc songs/stage performances, and theyre all worth checking out ^^ eurovision is the second most watched live tv even, right behind the Superbowl of course, and its definitely one of my favourite yearly things!
The most famous winners of Eurovision are ABBA who won it for the first time for Sweden in 1974 with Waterloo, 47 years later and 400 million records sold worldwide they are as popular today as they were in the 70’s. In 3 weeks time third Album Gold will reach a record 1.000 weeks on the UK Top 100 charts

Even IF you assume that no EU country would vote for the UK because of Brexit (and I doubt this), why would all those non-EU countries give 0 points to the UK as well? Not even a pity point from buddy Australia? No, the real problem was simply that "Embers" didn't stand out. It was a typical generic radio-friendly but bland pop song. Most people think it's an ok song, but on the other hand it was no ones favorite. And people vote for their favorites, and not for an "ok song"
I love Eurovision. There have been some good songs that did well after the show, (ABBA Waterloo must be one of the most famous) and sometimes a non winning song would go on to be a hit.
I am a big fan of LORDI the Finnish hard rock horror band who won. I owned their albums before they entered.
I voted for Finland that year - I still adore Lordi they were such a breath of fresh air from all the bland pop.
They are going to release those 7 albums at next Halloween ;)

This is actually very strange to hear that jury's voting is less political than people's voting. In my experience people vote for the songs they really like while national jury just gives highest points for their political friends. (Still ashamed by Russian 12 points to the Moldova this year and I am from Belarus)
Well, the thing is that there's a strong cultural bias in a lot of countries since people tend to like similar music and have similar languages etc when they're related somehow.
While the juries are supposed to judge based more on objective musical criteria.
@@Luredreier well, they "supposed to", but right now people's voting is more objective than jury's. I think right now people tend to like different multicultural things and they can appreciate any language and style Eurovision have to present.

I am from Denmark, and part of the nordics. If I vote for one of the other nordic countries, it is not because of politics, but because we probably share the same taste of music.

yes! The silly era is long gone in my opinion it was the '00s and early '10 thing but right now the industry is evolving and so is Eurovision
Eurovision is so good. I watch religiously every year and sometimes have even had eurovision parties, which included eurovision drinking games - the rule where you have to drink when pyrotechnics are used gets you hammered on its own.
It's very popular with the LGBT community too.

Although there are many talented people in the competition, it is basically just a popularity contest between nations, as nations just vote politically for nations that their nation get along with.

It is mostly notable when each country votes separately, but if you put all the points together from all the countries, it will not matter that much anymore unless a country has done something really bad politically (and no, UK this year just sent a song that was absolutely nothing special that even the jury did not like it).

You can get involved and vote for the winner now even though you can't compete. There is now a "rest of the world vote" incorporated into the final voting. The competition is usually held throughout the evening in Europe on a Saturday in May. Usually from about 8pm-12am BST, which would be 3pm-7pm EDT.
Lithuania's "We Are The Winners" was the best Eurovision entry ever. It's also the only entry that actually provoked a bit of booing from some sections of the audience in the stadium. And that never happens. Russia's Babushkas were lovely and deserved their result. Almost everybody loved them. If you do watch a whole competition be prepared for a long haul. Even now we have a couple of semi finals to narrow things down, the actual final goes on for a long time. And then the voting takes almost as long again. I used to go to a Eurovision party which raised money for a charity and they would switch the sound down and hold a vote of their own which was a lot more fun than watching Cyprus and Greece give each other all their points.
In the Uk some of us have Eurovision party’s, Which involves lots of friends and lots of drinks. This year we did shite and didn’t get a single point, but we did suck. Lol.

5:20 - That was actually one of our best participations. It got 5th place. And Stefan Raab, the guy coming on the stage there, wrote the winning song for Germany ten years later.
That guy explained what ESC is in probably the worst way ever.
If you take it very seriously and know more about it maybe, but he got her interested in ESC and I think that's mostly what the video tried to do.

politics because of friendship between countries and cultural being the same, austria is basically german but isnt a part of germany but has a big influence from Germany so germans will vote on them(if they like the songs ofcourse).
I wouldn't call the voting "politics" tho, it's more like kids at school ganging up together in groups to watch each other's backs. Besides countries vote, but there is the popular jury, which can change a lot, like it happened this year
I expect that many countries close together probably also have similar musical preferences too, to an extent.
Yeah the politics part is quite overblown, sure there are countries that swap points between each other, but that's rarely, if ever important for the actual winner. Can it decide between being 5th and 6th sure, but it seems like politics is mostly mentioned when people wine about their country's result.
True, it's not really 100% politics. A singer who represented a former Yugoslav country is probably famous in the other ones too, Greece and Cyprus used to vote for each other because both of them spoke Greek and they still know each others stars. Norway and Sweden like the same kind of pop music. The most beautiful moment ever was probably in 1982 when Germany won for the first time and Israel gave them 12 points. Funnily enough neighbour, German speaking Austria gave them just one point!
I definitely agree.. The people's votes are all intermixed these days.. So there is more corruption within the jury vote. Also. Having the big 5 in this day and age is undemocratic. They would do better if they competed on equal footing like everyone else.
@@swedishmetalbear They maybe would do better, but I don't have a problem with them being in the final, because it seems like that without their funding there would be a good chance the event wouldn't be as good as it is or maybe doesn't happen at all. Unless they are fine with needing to qualify, I wouldn't force it.

It has altered over the years they started having a semi-final instead of just a one night competition which is far better. Well known singers have represented UK Sir Cliff Richard, Petula Clark, Sonia, and Katrina and The Waves among others. Voting is done by telephone votes and votes by sms you can’t vote for your own country, voting is announced by each country’s voting panel from each capital city including the host country. Celine Dion represented Switzerland once.
I've been to Eurovision in Istanbul in 2004. And it was amazing. It's an experience you don't want to miss. A stadium filled with a bunch of friends from different countries coming together and have fun. I still remember driving up to the stadium in a cab waving my dutch flag and seeing more cabs with all different flags hanging out the windows. People should have been at least once. And you're so right it's all in good fun and spirit. Although I love Barbs he's so wrong in a couple of places as somebody from my own country already explained 🤩.
The most famous win for the UK was Bucks Fizz with 'Making Your Mind Up' in 1981. Great tune and performance! More recently we are famous for coming last or almost last! We're certainly not the most the popular guest in the Euro party! lol

America is getting their own eurovision contest which is airing next year and I can't wait but also very nervous for it!
Started watching when I was but a little kid and have only missed one grand final since, because I was working that night. Eurovision is love, eurovision is life, tickets sell out in minutes.
I´m not sure about the politics. I think it is a cultural thing. When Nordic countries often (but not always) vote for each other, it has to do with taste.

I watched "Eurovision" for the last time in 1975, and now I'm here. For some reason...
Let's give some clarifications. The competition was born taking inspiration from the Sanremo Festival (event of 6 years more). The idea of EuroVision came from an Italian journalist and with the help of the director of the EBU (today the same institution is called EBU) of French origin. It was originally supposed to take place in Italy but RAI, Italy's public television network, didn't quite believe in the project. The principality of Monaco was thought of but the costs would have been too high.
It was decided that the first country to host the event was in Lugano in Switzerland where the official language was Italian.
Informally the contest was known as the "Eurovision Song Contest" and the main focus of the contest was on the musical aspect.
In recent years the competition has been called Eurovision Song Contest or ESC precisely to underline the importance not only of singing and music but also of entertainment. Sometimes the quality of the music also wins, other times more fun.
There are exchange votes between culturally close countries but for reasons of cultural rather than political proximity.
Italy won 3 times and not 2.
Last information. There is no first prize. Competitors participate in the competition to make themselves known even outside their own national audience.
ESC is the best but also the best of Trash. Once you start watching it you won't stop :-)

Mainly, Eurovision song contest is about songs (music and lyrics). However, it is impossible to ascertain on what the people vote is based on (similar language, similar culture, the show, ...)
You HAVE TO react to sone Eurovision entries. Start with 2021 and go backwards to, let's say, 2016. You'll love it. Real talk.

Contestants Have to be over 16 (since 1990) and they have a junior Eurovision since 2003 for kids ages 9-14
They are launching American Song Contest next. It will be like Eurovision with the 50 States + DC, Puerto Rico, Guam, American, Samoa, US Virgin Islands, Marshall Islands. It will have Preliminary rounds, Semi finals and a Grand Final.
Because of Sandra Kim, who won for Belgium, she sang "I'm 16" but she was only 13. Still a great song.
The Eurovision Song Contest used to be far more serious. Not only did it launch the international career of ABBA and Celine Dion but it is thought to have been used to co-ordinate a revolution in somewhere like Portugal when their song was performed. The songs used to be playable by an orchestra of the host nation but these days they have backing tracks.
It has gone from a serious "which country has the best song" to what is now a massive camp gay party.
The UK got Zero from both the judges votes and the public vote this year. It wasn't even the worse song. We can't prove it was due to us leaving the EU but maybe. The partisan voting for neighboring countries just goes to show that people can talk about European integration but ethnic smilarity or politics often wins the day.
I liked it for fun so family and friends can watch and really unwind any stress of life.

I bet some of the contestants have it on their bucket list of things to do, whether they can sing or not does not matter.
I don't watch it anymore because I don't own a tv and believe it is shown on BBC which I refuse to pay the stupid TV License for, it should be scrapped and not allowed to watch I player either without the licence.
UK never does well anyway so I just wait until clips are posted on RUclips.
the big 5 don't send bad songs because they don't want to win, like for ex Italy, that always sends good stuff, the problem is usually the selection process and how seriously they take it. Italy usually sends something good because their selection is the winner(or runner-up, if the winner doesn't want to) from Sanremo, the biggest music festival in Italy, that is very serious business. Also, in general when some country sends a "troll" song it's not to avoid winning but either cause they don't take it seriously or cause people voted for that to go, as a joke. Besides, "troll" songs aka something deliberately funny and weird, are a big part of the allure of Eurovision, it's a big reason why people watch, it just has to be something u want to laugh with not laugh at, deliberately weird or comedic(like Verka Serduchka, the most iconic thing ever, this year's entry from Iceland)
But it's already out there, that there will be America's own contest. :'D
The Finnish entry (2006) was in Klingon (Star Trek).
The politic thing is, you basically suport each other if you are the little guy. Like Denmark, Sweden and Norway, we are basically squabbling siblings, but when it comes down to it we are small apart, but big together. But we can only give each other so and so many points, so the rest goes to other places, so its not totally unfair.
It’s NOT because countries votes for each other’s for political reasons, but different parts of Europe shares same taste of music, and therefore votes for the kind of music that’s similar to your own culture.
An American has won eurovision. Katrena and the waves won it for the UK. The lead singer of that band was American.

Yeesss, start reacting to Eurovision 2021 all songs
Unpopular opinion but i would LOVE to see the USA take part in the Eurovision, i think they would join in in a great way and want to win in their own way without dominating it, i bet the USA would surprise a lot of people and be humble but fantastic and likely a lot of fun if they ever got a chance to try and win and probably would understand what Eurovision represents more than they get credit for
We do like Americans.. They just have more awesome singers that Europeans idolize and would always win and it would turn into the Americanvision !!

I disagree. I think it's because their singers are more well-known and America has a more focused music industry. Good singers don't just come from America but there they have an industry behind them. Not saying Europe doesn't have one but it's definitely not as large.
And if you idolise a singer, you need to reevaluate yourself.
Actually, an American has already won Eurovision. Katrina, for UK in 1997. She's Texan.

I think the last time the uk won was either 96 or 97 but I remember it was katrina and the waves. I remember buying the song🙈🤣 but I loved it
American Song Contest will happen in 2022
Usually the winners of Eurovision disappear as soon as the next Eurovision happens. The one major exception to this of course is ABBA who won the competition in the early 1970's and went on to be a massive worldwide hit.

I've been watching Eurovision since I was 3 years old, but only remember it clearly from when I was 8 years old onwards. I have been to 5 live finals (UK 1998, Latvia 2003, Germany 2011, Sweden 2013 and Portugal 2018). I had tickets for 2020 in the Netherlands but it was cancelled due to Covid. I would love you to react to some of the songs or a recap of all the songs from one particular year for instance.
One Year without watching the performances I had a go at guessing who would vote for who, my success rate was 90%
Stella Mwangi's submission was an English song with a Swahili chorus. She's a Kenyan musician who's lived in Norway for 30 years and her songs are a depiction of the racial discrimination her family went through when they moved from Kenya to Norway in 1991. She was one of the favorite musicians at that time, and the song 'Haba haba' was at the top of the charts in 2011.
So Norway's best musical choice is basically to sing how shitty Norway is. Way to go Norway, I guess.

Political means a bit different here than in the U.S. i think. In Eurovision it means if there is somekind of beef between two countries they probably wont give that much points to each other - but then again its just one country, when there are over 40 who vote. Also a good example of politics in voting is that Ukraine won last year. I knew they were gonna win before knowing their song even. They had a very good song though too, i might have voted it anyway - but definately support votes were received. And good that they did.

But keep in mind that it's kind of a copyright nightmare for Americans to deal with Eurovision.
Because just because *we* can see it without copyright issues, these songs usually have a *ton* of copyrights as soon as they cross the pond.
Yeah you should react to more Eurovision shows. The Official channel has released recordings of previous shows.....
In 2022 the US gets their own contest .....THE AMERICAN SONG CONTEST (and as far as I know - the winner will perform as "guest" at the next Eurovision and vice versa)

The political part doesn't play as big of a part as some people seem to think, it's true that most countries are more likely to recieve points from their friendly neighbour countries but that's not enough to win, there is no way to win without points from the majority of the countries, so we get winners from everywhere geographically and more controversial countries like Russia tend to do really well or Azerbaijan who plenty of Europeans didn't even know was a country before they joined Eurovision.
I loved We Are The Winners, it was my favourite from 2006.
The jury/voting system actually came back earlier than stated it was actually in 2009.
Well talks are advanced at doing and American all states version next year, NBC have been awarded the screening rights

As a Swede i Don't like the fact that when he is talking about bad songs that don't want to win Eurovision he puts up a picture of one of the songs we won the competition with in 1984.

Eurovision is absolutely the BEST, campest, maddest fun. We make a big party out of watching it every year in our house (since I was little in the 70s!) You should try and watch a whole show, you would absolutely love it. Can I recommend a video? What this guy didn't mention is that there's always an absolutely lavish half time show while they're calculating the votes. Sometimes they're really brilliant, and a few years ago when Sweden hosted they did an act which explains the formula for how to make the perfect eurovision song and they absolutely nail it:
