To answer a few questions -- 1) there are MANY judges judging each show -- some for color guard, some for brass, percussion, general effect, etc. The scoring is super complicated! 2) The reason they have to be cutesy about the titles of the video is that many of them get taken down by the company that makes the official videos. 3) The corps practice starting in late spring and then take the shows on tour throughout the US during the summer, competing at each stop. 4)The finals are in Indianapolis. The Bluecoats are based in Canton, Ohio. 5) Some of my favorite corps are Bluecoats, Carolina Crown (insane brass), Cavaliers, Phantom Regiment, and Santa Clara Vanguard.
Think about what it takes to put something like this on the field, not just the endless rehearsal for the performers, but the simple (not so) logistics of traveling thousands of miles and 30+ shows each summer. I've performed, taught the movement for decades, directed and judged...hardest job of all is to get this thing from place to place. Check out Phantom Regiment '08 or Cadets '11 for benchmark shows.
The video production company that streams DCI events is very dogged about claiming copyright on videos. So in an attempt to subvert that, many are posted on YT as “baking tutorials.” That’s why you’ll often see drum corps fans looking to exchange “cake recipes” and such. Oh, and I know your Beatles reference of “getting by with a little help from [your] friends” was just meant as that, but The Bluecoats’ show in 2019 actually was a Beatles show. So, it was more fitting than you knew. LOL
I'm so glad yall are checking out this stuff. It's truly art and and sport combined. They are athletes who play marching instruments at a level much higher than most marching bands.
@jrwarrior9962 Couple of things.......... 1. Crown's brass received the maximum score, not perfect. There is no such thing as a perfect score in DCI. 2. While Crown's brass did indeed pop a 20 on finals, they aren't the first or the earliest. 2004, Blue Devils brass popped a 20 on Quarterfinals night.
@@juicymango8400 If you are running the 100M dash in the Olympics, and you set the world record time in prelims or semi's, does your world record time go in the books with an asterisk next to it? No it doesn't. You set a record, you ran one of the fastest times in history, regardless of when you did it. Period. BD 2004 is one of two horn lines to ever receive a 20 along with Crown 2013. Whether they did it at finals, quarters, or on Xmas morning while we all were opening up our presents, they accomplished that feat. No one cares that when BD did it, we just know and care that they achieved it as well.
About the “Bakery” thing. Basically FloMarching streams and broadcasts the finals every year, but are very copyright heavy and will make you pay to watch the videos. So people put “Not Bluecoats” etc. so FloMarching doesn’t take it down and people in the comments play along
Great reaction, thank you. This came in second place behind the Blue Devils (show you watched previously). These competitions are judged-judges are the green polos on the field. All the corps members are 21 and younger the touring season runs June to August. The audition process is November and December with show practices starts with weekend camps January-April.

It makes me SO HAPPY to find people reacting to DCI who are new to it. The Bluecoats are my favorite, and TILT is a HIGHLY beloved show by so much of the DCI Community (and the greater marching arts community). Their 2016 show, Downside Up, changed the direction of DCI as a whole. There are a LOT of amazing DCI shows, including the ones that don't often make the finals in the last contest of the year. You have no shortage of great things to watch!
these guys are more than high school band serious they are pay to play and still have to be very good by audition. they pay for the honor to perform in an elite Drum Corp
One thing I think is pretty cool is that they're marching perpendicular to the tilted orange pitch instead of the painted lines. It seems obvious in hindsight but it took me a few watches to actually register it. Thank you for putting this sort of stuff out there! If you're looking for more shows to watch Cadets 2011 is iconic. It's the only show I know of that has two uniforms on the same field. (If you guys already have a video about that I'm new to the channel sorry!)
Love checking out these reactions. Can’t wait to see what DCI shows you guys check out next. I’m a big Carolina Crown fan. Definitely check out their 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2019, and 2023 shows. Also, yes, there are judge commentaries readily available to watch with the performance overlayed on RUclips if you look hard enough. Like others have said, the reason the video is titled “Bakery” or you see others titled “Not…” is because DCI and their subcontracted production companies Flo Sports aka FloMarching, Tom Blair Productions, and the actual music writers themselves frequently put copyright DMCA takedowns on RUclips and other video hosting services so the DCI fans try to upload the videos with silly titles to try and get around the algorithm so the fans can watch these amazing shows on RUclips. Hope that helps. The Bakery jokes are just an additional side gag with the fans.
There are actually judges tapes. Generally they aren’t released to the public though. The judges are giving critiques on a tape recorder while the show is happening and they send them to the organization for feedback. And there’s a judge for each respective category of the show
I represent the Battalion!! I marched for them 2021. Despite this, my favorite Corp is easily Carolina Crown!!!! Every show they do is so good and so interesting!!!!
@ethanschneider625 I'm so happy for you!!! I had so much fun that year. I was so freaking sad when I only got that year and then aged out. I am so happy for the Corp they are progressing so much, and I couldn't be more proud of yall. I am so excited to see yall at Weber state!!!!!! SGU
Here's a little more context I didn't see already shared below. The Bluecoats finished 2nd in 2014 with this show with a 97.175. In my opinion at least, this was the fan favorite show of the year, Bluecoats had been steadily rising in recent years, and many fans felt this was their time to finally win their first gold medal. Unfortunately, they were competing against the highest scoring show in DCI history that y'all also watched recently, Felliniesque from the Blue Devils. The Blue Devils not only won every competition that whole season, they dominated and I don't recall them ever being close to falling out of 1st. The 2.475 point difference between the two corps on final night was MASSIVE; 2014 is one of the only years you'll ever see that large of a margin of difference. Also, as great as the synth section at the end is in the video, it hardly does it justice for just how loud and powerful that moment was in person. I mean that can be said for any show and how different it is live, but this is one of the few moments that has always stuck with me after seeing some 150+ live shows. 🙂
It’s not marching band, it’s drum and bugle corps, or just “drum corps” for short. There is technically a difference. 13:15 they have auditions and a few weekend camps in the winter and spring and then practice, travel, and perform essentially nonstop in summer until finals weekend. Everyone is 21 and under. The “not” part of the title is an attempt to avoid a copyright strike.
I marched drum corps long ago. 1975 and 76. My corps Guardsmen made the world finals fot the first time in 1976. No direct linkage to a high school. This level under 22 years old, so a mix of college and high school talent. Very hard work. For this corps probably mostly from Ohio, but also several others that march for them from other states and even other countries! The members of from other states would live at the homes of the Ohio members. Almost 50 years has passed, but drum corps is still a big part of who I am! ❤😊
There’s no commentary lol. But there are lots of judges looking at every specific portion of performers in the show. They talk into a mic as the show goes on to give criticism or insight on how the show is going. Once the show is over they’ll give those tapes to the corps staff so they have direction for things to possibly change or just practice.
If you guys aren't far from Canton Ohio then consider coming to Bluecoats community day at the end of the month! It will be the first premier of the 2024 Bluecoats' program.
Most performers go on to be band directors and music educators. Unfortunately not to many continue to perform after aging out. Mostly because the opportunities are hard to come by. (Definitely speaking from experience 😑)
In any other year, this would've been a championship show...unfortunately, they were up against the Blue Devils (NO affiliation with Duke U) and a show that got the all-time highest score. However Bluecoats would win their first title in 2016, and #2 in 2024. What do they go on to after this? Some go on to be instructors, others go on to more "normal" pursuits. I went into the military for hitch, one guy I marched against ended up flying combat missions in the Navy and was XO of an aircraft carrier near the end of his career. Others go into medicine, computers, etc. The one year I spent in Blue Devils was the greatest year of my life...and that was 40 years ago. Our show run at finals was the 2nd greatest 15 minutes pf my life -- surpassed ONLY by my wedding day. And I will tell you -- and about every corps vet in this comments section -- when you finish your show and the audience is losing their minds at what you just put out you feel like an absolute GOD. Glad you enjoyed it....and welcome to our world!

It's year round for staff. If anyone thinks it's a soft kinda thing, look for a single overweight person on the field. If you are to start, you won't be at the end. Practice, travel and perform. 24/7

Idk if its different for DCI but at the high school level in indiana they have 3 or so judges in the pressbox that score them overall and 2 Judges on the field that score the individual technique of the marchers and the categories are like Visual, Musical, and General Effect... From how I was told the judges give you two scores. One for the difficulty of what you're trying to do and one for how well you do it. They do some mumbo jumbo and then they give you a final score out of a 100 points.
Same premise, but more judges. Briefly, checking the 2023 finals there were a total of 11 judges. Four judges for GE, three visual, and four music. You already seem familiar with the idea that a few of the visual judges would be watching guard or battery percussion, and music judges are listening for different things as well.
If you think it looks cool on video, go see it live!!! Nothing compares to it. If you're not far from Canton, there's a competition at Hall of Fame Stadium on August 5th.
The baking stuff is a cheeky measure to make it harder to copyright strike the video. This video takedown practice has calmed down in the last couple years.
9:31 YES MY REACTION EXACTLY. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE MELLOPHONE SUSTAINS/CRESCENDOS INTO BIG PARTS OF SHOWS. She really seems to understand the music and obviously appreciates it which I just love. They might not know everything, but they’re trying and that’s better than anything
Please and Please…I highly ask and beg you watch the Bluecoats Alumni Corps 2022 Show for review. I am a Bluecoat from 1992 & 2022 Alumni Corps. Thank you.
The video with the source music flashbacks is a must watch but may get copyrighted because it is from the bliecoats alumni youtube channel. But showcases over 40 years of bluecoats history.
Yes this is a classic!!! Such a good year this year!! I rep bluecoats as my favorite DCI corp. They are always wanting to push the bar for what you can do on a football field. And the shows are always amazing!
It's NOT marching band!! It's DRUM CORPS!!! It is quite different. When I marched in the early to mid 90s EVERYONE knew the difference. There were many more in existence then. The heyday would have been the 70s and 80s as far as the numbers of young people marching. Now there's only a handful in comparision. For example, we just lost The Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps. They had been around for 70+ years (DCI was founded in 1972, after the folding of the rigid American Legion). They had won 10 championships, 2nd only to Blue Devils. Folded up because of extreme political targeting leading to a financial windfall. SCV (Santa Clara Vanguard) just came back into existence after a year long hiatus. They had at least 6 championships. Money issues there. But the best of the best went to the drum corps (out of every band). But now because of copy cating, winter guard and year around musical involvement the gap has closed (a lot). The difference though is important. And as a 5 time horn captain, sololist and lead trumpet who has participated in band, orchestra, jazz band and drum corps the levels are telling and have different spectrums of performance. Drum corps now is a sport and the top corps members are closer to Olympians and heroes to me!!! 💢🎺🎶🎵
Same year…The Cadets “Angels and Demons”! They won the championship this year. The judges are running all over the field during performances scoring them in different categories. They are wearing green shirts.
Fun fact: DCI Finals was televised on PBS from 1975 - 2004, and from 2005 - 2007, ESPN 2 would show a two hour highlight. Since then there aren't any national broadcasts.
I think you mean *The Cadets 2011! Blue Devils won this 2014 year with Felliniesque!

Fun fact: DCI Finals was televised on PBS from 1975 - 2004, and from 2005 - 2007, ESPN 2 would show a two hour highlight. Since then there aren't any national broadcasts.
