There’s nothing like seeing the Stones in a small theatre. I saw them at The Tower in Philly from the 2nd row in 2002. Incredible. This 1999 gig is awesome. Wonderful set list. Love the channel!
Exciting show, very well recorded. I absolutely love the run of deep cuts, especially this soulful rendition of Melody and this amazing Moon is Up. Also maybe the best live record of Shattered. And yes, as you say, you can feel in some songs the same raw energy as in Live in Texas 78 🙂
What I love about your show is that you're not mired in the past...there's so much to their history post Tattoo You, or in some people's view, post-Mick Taylor. To be sure all of that is great - I've been listening and loving the band since the 70s and I love all of it. But too many people I know just dismiss so much of their history. There's so much to unpack from the ER tour (Steel Wheels/Urban Jungle) onward and I love that you take it all on. It's not all good - but there's plenty that IS great. Keep up the great work!
Great review, Justin! My first thought was how much this show reminds of those from the Stripped box in the best way possible. I think those performances are excellent and well mixed. The Stones are at their playing best in these smaller, intimate settings.
Thank you for your review, Justin. My copy is on its way. I'm thrilled this show is now an official release, even more thrilled after your review. Thanks again.
Just got my copy today. I’ve listened to it twice already the last couple of days on Apple Music. Like you I’ve had the bootleg for a lot of years. The one thing that still bothers me is how they edit things like in between song banter out. Some was kept in some was not. I’m assuming that’s just for time purposes, but I always wanted to myself. Why do they have to mess with something and just put it out as it came out. That being said I still love the show. Was always one that I hoped they would put out and I’m glad they finally did.
I love this live album, for me probably the best live show of their later years as you might say. Jumping Jack flash is probably the best live version I’ve heard. Brilliant gig throughout .
The U.S. postal service was late getting this to me, so I rented it on Amazon Prime last night. I liked the double shots/split screen, and Keith’s playing is spot on! His guitar is mixed up front. Big thumbs up.
Hi Justin! I got the CD set yesterday. Will listen to it later. Tomorrow I'll be getting the 4K Blu-ray and will definitely be watching it! Can't wait! Peace!
Justin, i know what you mean mentioning the shortcomings of the Wiltern performance. I felt the same initially. However subsequent hearings have revealed the energy and gusto of the performance to me. If one just 'zooms out' a little and avoids scrutinising Keith's playing too much, I think its a lot more enjoyable. I haven't heard the Shepherd's Bush show - yet. Thanks for a great channel..keep it up !
Definitely will be adding this concert CD/BD to my Stones collection when my order arrives at my local record store. May even pick up the vinyl LPs. Thanks for the review !
Another great release!! I quite enjoyed the split screen aspect, upon rewatches yo can focus on a different section!! 1994-2003 were certainly the Stones at their very best Highlights for me are: Shattered, All Down The Line, Melody, Brand New Car, Moon is Up, Route 66
Nice, honest review, as we have come to expect from you Justin. Yes, this a show we collected, and sought better audio visual versions over the years. Now we have the ultimate version of the special show. My motto is to buy what physical releases the band graces us with to help ensure more archive release & box sets will follow. Record companies have extraordinary profit targets to hit to make further releases possible. Simply turning a profit is not good enough. I got two different configurations so far of Welcome to Shepherd’s Bush. As I watched, I wish they would have used that footage to do a few songs using as much footage possible featuring a band member as ‘bonus features’- For example- “Charlie Cam”, Keith Cam”, etc to utilize all that footage they did film. I have always thought it was an anomaly that more songs from the Voodoo Lounge Album were played than cuts from the, then, more current release of the Bridges to Babylon album during this show.
Band sounds great, the smaller venues really fit The Stones and the crowd is great. The deep cuts are worth the price of admission Melody and Before They Make Me Run are tops imo I do wish they varied up the set list a little more. Would’ve loved more Exile deep cuts over Brand New Car.
What a treat this release is. Watching you about the split screen. I was thinking that this one was great to watch in the cinema that would be awesome! I always don't like melody but this did change my mind.
The Moon is up is stunning! So much different then the studio version, the guitar sound is fantastic. Mick sings it also in another tempo, absolutely fabulous!
Heard it last night. Loved it! Is there any news on some new live album from the Hackney Diamonds tour? That'd be brilliant.. But I think that'd become a reality later down the line after their European tour, since they didn't play much of hackney diamonds in the american tour.. Hoping to hear other tracks like Get close, Live by the sword, Driving me too hard and others... And a brand new live album after that!
I think we can give up on an HD release from the US tour....maybe from Europe. But even that is a maybe at this point. There hasn't been a full live audio release of a "current' tour since Live Licks. There were only a handful of live tracks from the 2017 tour on the Honk compilation.
Sounds fantastic. I'll be getting mine tomorrow. Better late than never right? I'm really interested to hear the live Moon Is Up. From the way you describe it seems like it won't disappoint. Also my TV is 65 inches so those split screens will not bother me at all.
@HangFireStonesPodcast I watched it an it was excellent. I really enjoyed Moon Is Up and Brand New Car. Plus, Melody was great. Although I did notice that Mick kinda censored his lyrics on Some Girls which I thought was a silly thing to do. Anyway,Happy New Year's Justin.
I’ve just heard The record. Melody, Route 66, and Moon is Up are incredible gems. Despite The Fantastic performances, I also miss Ronnie. I think he is so much better after 2002 tours.
Ronnie had his struggles during the 1997-98 “Bridges to Babylon” tour, and Keith really stepped up during the 1999 “No Security” tour covering the majority of the heavy guitar work. “ Ronnie B. Good” was ready to go when the band returned for the “LICKS” Tour…..Some may say that Licks tour with its Arena ,Stadium, and Theatre trilogy concept, varied set list, may be the best “Modern era” Stones tour
Thanks for the review. This one is on my Xmas List and maybe I'll get lucky - Santa knows if I've been naughty or nice. Justin, do you know anything about whether the El Mocambo shows were filmed? In visual terms, esp considering stage size, I would sooo love to see even a couple of the songs from one of those two nights on film!
Hello😊Justin is this some Mowie?or is it some new record with old songs??❤❤❤❤❤maybe a lot off Performence in a mowie i can buy??So good and amazing ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉😊where can we buy this? You are the best Justin❤😊
@ lol. Maybe I went too long on the video but wanted to cover it song by song. Hope you liked my review. I think the Blu-ray especially is fantastic and I actually love the split screen.
Loving the album and loving the review. But....there's always a but. Am I just being a bit picky but the cover for this release and the previous live album 'At The Wiltern' are, in my humble opinion, pretty poor. It doesn't detract from what matters, the music, but I just would have liked a bit more. (Wasn't keen on the "Hackney Diamond's artwork either, so it probably is just me) Keep up the great work
@HangFireStonesPodcast whaat?! how could you dislike any of the two 😅 I guess it shows how much we are tied to our first favorite live performances we both individually got to know and love as teenagers.. 🙌 Just My Imagination live at the Beacon 06 is a hard one to top for me, but I see the charms of Melody live in 99, no question 😎
I was there for both Brixton in 95 and Shepherds Bush in 99. The set list compared to Brixton was very average. As ever, the performance was great but I'll take Brixton over Shepherds Bush every time.
@HangFireStonesPodcast it was the best night of my life. Great mates, best band and £25 a ticket and we got very near the stage. A near perfect set list. I had a glimpse of what heaven looked like. Might have smoked a few joints too
I have to disagree , I like the release of Shepherd’s Bush , & there are some great songs on hear . But that being said I did not like Micks vocal performance on this & he messed up at least three songs as did Keith . I thought the Wiltern show was far superior in every way . Mick sang great & actually sounded like he gave a shit & put great effort into every song . Not so much on Shepherds Bush . Keith’s playing was also phenomenal on Wiltern . Also , the sound mixing on Shepherds Bush is horrible. The horns are way too loud & upfront & you can hardly hear Ronnie’s guitar through the entire show . I do agree with your statement about The Fonda Theater show being one of their best performances, because it is IMO one of the best shows they’ve ever put out . Shepherds Bush needs to be remixed by someone that knows what they’re doing . Not trying to be a downer but there is no way this is better than the Wilton . That show Rocks .
Great performance. TERRIBLE PACKAGING. I can't remove the disc without smudging and scratching it. I get the environmental concerns, but it's moot when I have to have another copy shipped to my home.
@HangFireStonesPodcast Discs scratch easily. The act of sliding it out can lead to a scratch. Jewel cases still exist. That aside, its a great Rolling Stones performance. The video and audio are excellent. Thanks for all your videos. It's great to see real Stones fans celebrating the greatest band ever.
Is anyone else sick of Jagger's wearing an unbuttoned shirt over a t-shirt? I wish he'd stick to all-black or even bring out a vintage outfit more often. He just doesn't have the killer style he used to have. But thank goodness the dreadful '89 tour look is long gone.
What a silly comment. Never thought about it and I’ve never heard anyone else say they’re sick of a button shirt over a t-shirt. I t makes for any easy change and Mick as many performers change their wardrobe all the time.
The only good songs The Rolling Stones have recorded since Tattoo You (leftovers) Only my opinion are: Like a Rolling Stone, Love is Strong and Angry. The rest are forgettable.
Sorry to disagree but having watched the blu ray, the show is not great and does not compare with the other shows you mention...if you want a Great Stones ' small' gig video just put on the 95 Brixton classic
There’s nothing like seeing the Stones in a small theatre. I saw them at The Tower in Philly from the 2nd row in 2002. Incredible. This 1999 gig is awesome. Wonderful set list. Love the channel!
Awesome you saw them in a club. I saw them one in that tour too! Thanks so much for watching!
The 4K release looks amazing! So happy they restored it like this.
the 2 cd edition with bluray. does the bluray have the dolby atmos option?
Exciting show, very well recorded. I absolutely love the run of deep cuts, especially this soulful rendition of Melody and this amazing Moon is Up. Also maybe the best live record of Shattered. And yes, as you say, you can feel in some songs the same raw energy as in Live in Texas 78 🙂

@@HangFireStonesPodcast Thanks Justin then I now.Have a Nice evening or day♡☆☆☆☆
Question for Justin, and Hang Fire community - What are a few reasonable shows you all would like to see released as a Rolling Stones archive release?
Haha so many. But Double Door 1997 is my last reasonable Holy Grail!

Speaking of small venue Stones shows captured on film, how would you compared it to Scorsese's Shine A Light? ;)
