@Zues R : Not really. Baseball is simple. Cricket has too much going on with it. The batter has three chances to score a run and a fourth if the pitcher throws the ball outside of the plate. Four balls is an automatic run to a base. Three strikes ( swing and miss or hits out of bounds is an out. You get three outs to an inning. You switch sides at every inning up to nine innings. The amount of scoring you can do depends on your pitcher and your hitters. Baseball favors the runner, hitter and a good pitcher.
These are some of the basic rules about cricket. It is not a very difficult sport to learn. There are a whole lot of rules than this. I'm American and I been following cricket for over 5 years and know a lot of cricket history. The only way people are going to learn about the sport is to watch it. If you watch a day of a test match, you should be able to get most of the rules. Beginners should watch T-20 first before moving on to other formats. The more often you watch the sport, the more you will learn including the field positions which will take time to learn. I like first class (Test and four day cricket) and limited overs (50 and 20 overs cricket). I've spoken to several people back home about cricket and they know what it is. I'm currently following the Ashes and expecting a big series between India and South Africa especially the 4 match test series which will occur near the end of the year. I learn most of the stuff by watching test matches.
Da Undaground Mane Hey brother, thanks for stopping by. Excellent advice for all those Cricketing newbies out there. The key point: is just start watching games. Like you said: most people will learn the majority of it just by watching a test match. Cheers :)

Cricket: A man in medieval knight's armour hits an extremely hard ball at high velocity speeds into a crowd of people wearing shorts and watermelon hats
Ninh Ly for caught out and stumped out people normally just say caught and stumped and a team can declare we're if they have a lot of runs the captain calls the batters in then bowl if the other team scores less than a certain amount the team that batted first can send the other team back in straight away but if the team gets enough runs to win the game ends because the team gave up there 2 innings ps i know this because I play cricket
Hey Great Video! Just two corrections in Rule #6 at 2:04 1) Hit Wicket - is when the batter inadvertently hits his own stumps with the bat or any part of his body in the process of hitting the ball. 2)You CANNOT make your partner out by hitting the ball onto your partner’s stumps as you showed in the video. What happened in that particular clip was that the batter (the striker) hit the ball back towards the stumps at his partner’s (the non-striker) end and the bowler made contact with the ball before it went on to hit the stumps. As the non striker was out of his crease when the ball hit the stumps, he was given out and this form of dismissal would come under “RUN OUT” credited to the bowler and NOT the batter who struck the ball.
Shaurya Negi: Exactly. Although it's very simplified, a lot of this video will be helpful for people starting to get to know the game. But the part of the video about "Hit Wicket, Accidentally Out" is so completely wrong that you have to wonder what the video maker was thinking. Hit Wicket has nothing to do with the stumps at the non-striker's end. Hit Wicket is the batter hitting their own stumps while playing the ball or setting off for a run immediately after playing the ball. The ball being deflected onto the non-striker's stumps is a different law altogether and is a Run-Out. And it has to be deflected from someone, not just hit the stumps. There is no such law as accidentally out, and they are always called Laws, not Rules.
Hitting the ball into your partner's wickets is NOT automatically out and it is NOT counted as hit wicket. The way it works is, if you hit the ball, and it hits someone on the fielding team, and then hits your partener's stumps WHILE he's out the crease, it gets given as a RUN out
Agreed, that was a bad (and incorrect) example of hit wicket. That poor chap would only lose his wicket if an opposing player had touched the ball before hitting the stumps. And even in this case it would be a run-out, not a hit wicket. Example of hit wicket is when the batsman loses his balance while making their shot and falls onto the stumps, knocking them down.
+Hannah Sheridan Thanks Hannah, I appreciate the comments. I'm sure you got it from the video, but if not - there's plenty of T20 highlights on RUclips, you can watch full highlights in less than 8 minutes. Hope that helps? Be sure to share this video and subscribe :)

Thanks for making the video mate! I’m an American in uni in Alabama and I’m trying to major in Sports Management and I am trying to get into Aussie subculture with cricket.
okay, I FINALLY get it. Thank you. I always thought cricket was like baseball, but really the only thing cricket has in common with baseball is that someone tries to hit a thrown ball with a stick. I'll try watching a few games now I know what's going on. I saw an extremely funny cometary by an Englishman of American Football. It was clear that the "commentator" had no clue what was going on. I suggested they do another video with an American commentating cricket.
Hi Eric Taylor. Yes, a lot of Americans assume that Cricket is just like baseball and they're horribly confused when they find out that it's not. Once you break it down - it's actually quite a simple game to understand and not at all like Baseball. Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
schradeya Cool, I'm glad this video helped you out! Cricket is actually an easy game, it just needs explaining properly. Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Ninh Ly Yeah it does actually seem pretty simple! And I kept thinking, "Ohhh, that's where baseball gets that rule/word/whatever!" One huge difference between Cricket and American sports in general is that we like to artificially stop our games periodically (so we can play ads on TV), but Cricket lets things happen naturally. There is no way an at-bat in baseball could last longer than 7 pitches maximum; we either move the man off the field or on base if it goes further. And they often lst only one pitch! Therefore, innings, and to near extent, games, all last about the same predictable amount of time. But it looks like at-bats in Cricket can last aaaaages! I've always wondered how the matches can last so long, but now I know!
schradeya Especially in Test Cricket, it seems to take aaaaaages to actually play the damn game. But it's not so bad in T20 Cricket, as there's strict time penalties - they have to hurry it up! Glad you managed to understand Cricket a little more. It's definitely not like Baseball!
Ninh Ly I'm so glad I found this video. You really have a knack for taking confusing things and putting them into words anybody can understand! I really, really want to sit down and watch a good match now!!! Maybe not a test match... ;) I don't have that kind of time! Yeah, it's NOTHING like baseball!! Well, a _tiny tiny_ bit, in that there are a few words that baseball took from Cricket (I assume), and there is a ball that gets thrown, haha!
schradeya You'll find that Cricket and Baseball have shared origins. But that's about the only similarity you'll find. I'd recommend watching a T20 game before you head on over to Test Cricket. That'll ease you in for the long long long long long time that a Cricket match is actually played. Thanks again for the compliments! :)
I watched this video some months ago because I wished to finally understand the game of cricket. Since then, I have started watching it regularly and with great enjoyment. So thank you!

So easy video to understand it has explained everything so well and the only thing I could not understand was about getting stumped out now I understand. Cricket is way better than football because I am stoke fan but lost interest in football now and stoke have dropped into the championship they were in the premier league they have turned so rubbish now that’s why I don’t bother with football just a bunch of guys running round a pitch and getting paid ridiculous money but as I said great video.👍🏻😃💯💯💯

My dad has been a cricket umpire for longer than I’ve been alive, and it’s just now that I’m older that I want to learn Cricket more so that I can go watch his games ❤️🏏
This is a very good and concise explanation of cricket for beginners; in fact probably the best. However as someone with 50 years experience of playing, watching, umpiring, scoring, coaching, etc. I have to point out one section that you need to review: "Ways to get out #6" because that is either badly explained or mistaken. 'Hit wicket' means a batsman gets out when he knocks his own bails off when facing the bowler. This is usually done with the bat or when he 'treads on his wicket' playing back. The clip of the batsman hitting the ball down the pitch in #6 to strike his partner's stumps would only result in a wicket if A) the non-striker was out of his ground and B) the bowler touched the ball before it dislodged the bails at that end. A batsman can ONLY be run out by a fielder (which of course, includes the wicket-keeper and the bowler). "Accidental out" does not exist in cricket!
My brother in law watches cricket all the time and even works at a ground. I have always wanted to watch but never understud any of it but this video helped. Thanks!

Fun fact: in the early years (late 1800's to early 1900's), baseballs were stitched like cricket balls are now, once around the circumference of the ball. The 'figure-8' stitching pattern for baseballs was developed later.

Cricket: Where MLB Baseball & NHL Hockey combine to make a pretty decent sport. This video literately explains it perfectly in under 10 minutes and is easily the best version I’ve found to explain the game. Pandemic brought me to Cricket 🏏... pretty addicting to watch actually.
You explained the sport well. I love cricket but am concerned for the sport. Test cricket is REAL cricket, I despise how we now have a T20 World Cup. T20 should not be taken too seriously. It will kill test cricket and tradition.
Connor Munday Yes it probably will. Test Cricket is real Cricket I agree, but the world is lacking in patience by the day. To appeal to the younger generation, they had to make the game shorter and T20 has done a pretty good job in bringing in new fans. Whether that translate to fans for Test Cricket remains to be seen, but unfortunately T20 isn't going away any time soon. Thanks for stopping by, be sure to share this video and subscribe :)
Connor Munday Ah, so that's why the Aussies are better than the English at Test Cricket. I think the English take Test Cricket seriously too, with all the inter-county games that are played. But the Aussies development programme for most sports is far superior than anything we have over here, bar football.
Connor Munday T20 cricket has pretty much killed West Indian Test cricket and I daresay it will kill Indian Test cricket soon with the popularity of the IPL over Test series. Having said that, England is the only nation that really disregards limited overs cricket and I wouldn't say it's benefiting their Test side in any way. I reckon Australia has it about right in the balance between Test/Shield cricket and BBL. T20 is alright for light entertainment but I agree it shouldn't be taken seriously.

27 YEARS! I don't think any of your Kiwi friends themselves know any of d rules.
As an American who grew up with baseball, this sport was always intriguing to me. Glad to finally understand the basics of it!
Crciket is not inticate as baseball its quite simple
@Zues R : Not really. Baseball is simple. Cricket has too much going on with it. The batter has three chances to score a run and a fourth if the pitcher throws the ball outside of the plate. Four balls is an automatic run to a base. Three strikes ( swing and miss or hits out of bounds is an out. You get three outs to an inning. You switch sides at every inning up to nine innings. The amount of scoring you can do depends on your pitcher and your hitters.
Baseball favors the runner, hitter and a good pitcher.
So, basically, a sport for hitters who never understood the idea of a strike zone :D
Cheers :)
This game doesn’t have a lot of rules, it has LAWS :-)
What channels can you watch cricket on in the USA I can’t find any
Test is slow
ODI is fast
T20 is superfast
I hope you watch yesterday's cricket world cup final

But yeah, a newbie should start from T20.
This was great, thank you explaining so simply. I'm watching this old Indian movie where the Indian citizens essentially won't have to pay taxes for three years if they beat the Englishmen at cricket.

Ooh Lagaan was such a good movie!!!
Have been watching Cricket since 1990's and can clearly say you have explained the Game in a nutshell and elegantly with all major points
Here in the Kansas City, Missouri area (USA) there is a cricket league that seems to be gaining more and more traction. I haven't been to a match yet, but look forward to it. Especially now that I have a better understanding. Thank you, it was fast (and had to rewatch it) but has been the best explanation that anyone has given to me, again, thank you!
Any time! I'm glad this video helped. If you're struggling with the speed, you can play the video back slower using the playback buttons.

Recently USA defeated Ireland (Full member team) in a t20 match. It's a very big achievement for USA. Congratulations
I follow tennis and football with great interest but nothing beats the thrill of watching a cricket match. Absolutely one of the best games to play and watch!

Thank you very much. This was a clear explanation and demonstration of rules that I did not understand at all . I am an American who recently became interested in cricket because of PG Wodehouse and a movie called Warriors. That movie is amazing . It is about a team of Masai warriors who became excellent cricket players and made it to the finals in the Last Man Standing tournament at Lords in London .
Cool, thanks Carol. Glad you found this video useful.

Ninh Ly for caught out and stumped out people normally just say caught and stumped and a team can declare we're if they have a lot of runs the captain calls the batters in then bowl if the other team scores less than a certain amount the team that batted first can send the other team back in straight away but if the team gets enough runs to win the game ends because the team gave up there 2 innings ps i know this because I play cricket
assassin8or you are weird
assassin8or gfj
But if you get hit in the crowd or break your hand trying to catch the ball than you get to be on TV 😁🤩
Hey Great Video! Just two corrections in Rule #6 at 2:04
1) Hit Wicket - is when the batter inadvertently hits his own stumps with the bat or any part of his body in the process of hitting the ball.
The way it works is, if you hit the ball, and it hits someone on the fielding team, and then hits your partener's stumps WHILE he's out the crease, it gets given as a RUN out
+Warren552011 yeah that's out
I remember that game,it was zampa in bbl,it was also the melbourne derby I guess.
Warren552011 yeah I remember zamps getting smashed in the face. What a champion though because he got back up and kept playing
What?
Thank you. Very well explained. My husband always has the cricket on so I need some understanding for my own sanity.

Hi James.

Ben Stokes you here wow. 😍
Im jazzed up for MLC in the US next year. Thank you for the explanation. learned a few things I didn't know and got a nice refresher!

Thank you so much for this video. I've recently become interested in non-native US sports (hockey, football, cricket), and seriously want to understand and enjoy them. This helped immensely!
Ah thanks, I greatly appreciate that!

Cricket is one of the amazing and very entertaining game🔥..but I'm sad because it is so underrated😢..it deserves more popularity😞
Probably yes. But it's still popular.
@@NinhLyUK yeah..but only in some Asian contries
England, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, West Indies .... none of those are in Asia.
Nice.
"a combination of baseball and hockey" is the best description of Cricket I have ever heard
Wow... I have wondered for years what people cheer about in cricket and how any team wins and never understood. Now i do and would like to know more.
People mostly cheer for 4 runs. ,6 runs or a batsman getting out,and to win u just need to score just 1more run than ur opposition score
Thanks, much appreciated.

Dude, I'm only 19. I love test cricket. Must be because I'm Australian, and we take test cricket seriously.
T20 is alright for light entertainment but I agree it shouldn't be taken seriously.
im 15 in pakistan and prefer test over the other formats
