I wish Dave would of asked her what exactly happened to her car. If it was an issue where maintenance was involved. There's a lesson to learn from this about maintenance of a car. If you have a Toyota or Honda, for the most part, if you change the fluids, you wont have problems.
-Oil change: every 5000 miles along with the oil filter. Yes, the oil in many cars is still good at 7500miles or even longer however, but all cars burn oil. After 5000 miles my car burns a half a quart. The oil is still fine but the reduced oil volume leads to less lubricated parts which leads to more wear and tear.
-Transmission fluid changes every year... yes, it's overkill but you never have to worry about ever getting full service done at a dealership. My friend has a Honda Accord with a CVT. I taught him how to change it yearly. The total cost of the fluid is $16.00/year for 3 bottles. Dealership recommends a transmission service every 60,000 miles. CVT's are notorious for building contaminants because of their single belt. He puts 20,000.00 miles/year on his car. So, he can either go to the dealership and pay $220.00 every 3 years to get the transmissions fluid changed or do it yearly, after years the cost comes out to $48.00. A flush isn't needed because you've continuously changed the fluid yearly.
-Same with radiators. Do it yearly and it's much cheaper than going to the stealership for the service.
I did the minimum changes on my Mitsubishi Eclipse. Car died after 5 years. My Chevrolet Berreta died in 3 years. Then, I owned an Acura for 10 years following the above of maintenance. I drove that car like a mad man racing it to its 8100 r.p.m. red limit. I drove it hard. I owned the car for 10 years with 200,000 miles without a single problem and I mean nothing. I lost the car in an accident. I was hoping to keep it for another 200,000 miles. I now own a Honda Accord V6 6-speed manual. I've owned the car for 3 years doing the above. Not a single problem. Do the maintenance on a Toyota, Lexus, Honda, or Acura, for the most part, you will not have problems. Learning to do maintenance is not difficult at all and I'm always happy to teach any of my friends or church members.
All fluids degrade due to oxidation. Not changing fluids is a recipe for costly repairs. It's saved me a tremendous amount of money.

      @knighthawk3559 2 года назад +1

There are so many things wrong with your statements. You clearly don't know what your talking about. I am a vehicle tech of 14 years. Rescued oil quantity does mean less lubricated parts. As long as the oil is between the indication marks in the dipstick, then the oil pick up will still be submerged and the oil pump can pump oil around the engine. Drop it below the oil pick up, and the the oil pump cannot pump resulting in a low oil pressure condition. Don't spew incorrect facts please acting like you know. You are the type of customer who brings a car in on the back of a tow truck, with boxes of parts where you attempted a repair but got in way over your head because you thought you knew what you were doing.

I can do all of that myself for $500, but hopefully the car will run and drive just fine until I replace that stuff.
I paid $2,500 for my first car after having two mechanics look at it, but then a mechanic did a proper inspection, and I had a $4,000 repair bill. I drove the car for four years and never took care of most of that stuff. I wish that I had gotten a second opinion on the stuff that I did replace--or did it myself.

I'm sure she has a friend who is a mechanic or her boyfriend or family member knows a mechanic to get a second opinion. $2500.00 is way too much for a car repair, she's getting ripped off. I'm a third owner of a 1995 Ford Mustang GT, I had some major car repairs done on it since I've own it for 13 years, the costs was way less than $2500.00. I have my experiences with loans, I don't want anymore loans especially a car loan. I work for a bank and for employees we have great rates, still I don't want a loan for a car. My car is in good running condition, I just got a new paint job and fixing it up to look new, I have no intentions on buying another car. With her situation, what's wrong with the car? More than likely it's not that major to cost $2500 for repairs. I guarantee she get it repaired for far less than $1000.00. Ive got a question for the people in RUclips comments!
So I’ve just cleared off my debt over £23000 in a couple months, I now have moved from England to Australia so that’s why I cleared the debt so quick - the Mercedes went back and I paid the rest of the finance off (won’t be doing that again) I paid my £7000 loan as I was saving to pay it off so I got rid of that and some silly credit things.
My question is: Im looking to buy a car now I’m here in Australia, I’ve been borrowing my dads car but I hate driving it - it’s a nice car but I’m scared something is going to happen to it and I’m paranoid driving it in case I scratch it.
So how much do I spent on a car? I need something reliable as we’re moving to the countryside and will take 40 mins to get to work,
I’ve been looking at 2014 vw polos - cheap for the German quality but there around $13000 AUD so probs around $7500 USD?
I only have $4500 AUD left in the bank after paying all my loans off, so what do I do? Take a loan out for the rest? Find a cheap car for $4000? Or continue using my dads car until I save and pay cash ?
I have no other debts apart from a phone contract here that costs me $84 AUD a month - probs around $40 USD
I also plan on saving every penny I get for my first house, I have no bills or rent to worry about whilst I’m living with my dad.
Also I don’t earn a lot, haven’t started work just yet but I’ll be earning around $31000 AUD

lozza10001 hello! I’m a 19 year old kid in college and about a month ago my mom told me “your done driving my car, go out and find your own”
Went and tried to get a loan for 16K for a newer car... was denied (best thing that’s ever happened to me)
Went out and bought a $4,000 (out the door) 2003 Honda Civic with 115K miles.
After putting 2K into it (new tires, battery, front control arms, fluid flushes, and spark plugs), I drove it across the United States from California to Missouri with my girlfriend to visit her Dad who’s in the Army. We did it in 2 days with our average speed of 85-90.
What’s my point? There’s NO difference between that 16K car I was going to buy, or the total of 6K for that Honda (including repairs).
Buy the cheap car, have a couple thousand for preventative stuff (minus the control arms, the stuff I listed up above is like 90% of what you need to do), and you’ll be set.
      Best of luck!
