  • Whenever a Sonic game gets released on PC, there is basically a mod of any kind already in development or ready to be released, and Sonic Mania is no exception. Sonic Mania has been out for 6 years, which means the game has been modded for quite some time now, varying from character reskins, gameplay tweaks, UI changes, audio swaps and lastly, stage mods, which is what we'll be focusing on.

How'd you think of the demos for Triple Trouble 16 Bit?
Also wondering if Generations is still your favorite among all the non-Genesis like Sonic games. Might be mine; even though it's a tad flimsy on 3D, I still just think it has amazing level design, whether in 2D or 3D. A lot of fun to replay or even speedrun. (I do like the speed stages of the Adventure games and daytime stages of Unleashed as well though.) That top stage mods video was great as well BTW, though if it was remade I think Frozen Hill would be worthy of a slot. Also I think Unleashed Project is definitely in the top ten looking at quality alone (maybe even up near the best), but I understand if you relegated it to honorable mention due to being just a straight port of official stages.

I was wondering related to this, what's your top three favorite 2D Sonic games between the Genesis games & Mania?
Good list (though Misfits Pack deserves a mention IMO!).

      Sonic 3&K, Mania, Sonic 2
If i were to seperate 3&K as multiple games, then it would go Mania, Sonic 2, Sonic 3.
I did have Misfits Pack in mind, but since the last public demo was years ago and development on it is up in the air atm, I had to exclude it.

So listening to about the first half of the video proper (and Mystic Caves)...(also sorry in advance this turned out a bit lengthy)
I think the take Mania gave for Oil Ocean Act 2 was pretty cool, but that being said I'm a fan of Sandopolis - of which there aren't too many. Certainly a proper Angel Island Zone or instead Mystic Caves would have sufficed on this spot in Mania (I'm not quite sure why Mystic Caves was put over Press Garden instead? Even though I'm not a huge fan of Act 1 in Press Garden apart from the creative setting - though Act 2 clicked with me better). That "nobody asked for Oil Ocean" moment was funny regardless (curious who else chimed in there).
I'd have considered any mod with finished publicly available stages eligible for inclusion, of which Misfits Pack has four, even if it's a demo of a (possibly) to-be bigger mod. But that's ultimately your decision & I understand it.
A couple mods not in this list that I recall seeing myself: There's one called Diamond Isle (as far as I know an original stage though with Green Hill esque visuals), and also two separate recreations of Ice Cap Zone (one by rob and one by McNuggie). Have you played any of these, to date (either Diamond Isle or the Ice Cap recreations)?
Finally - since you mentioned fangames - the art design and music of After The Sequel definitely trump the levels and physics (which felt a bit off) somewhat IMO. Fallen Star is another fangame with tremendous art, but kinda so-so level design. I think the best 2D fangame I've seen (and it actually is sort of in the Mania spirit with how it alters stage designs though visuals are Genesis style so it isn't quite as much a treat for the eyes) is Triple Trouble 16 Bit, a complete rework of all the zones of the Game Gear title in the spirit of if Triple Trouble was a sequel to Sonic 3&K on the Genesis. Given the original Triple Trouble zones were quite short and limited by hardware, they tend to have even more content changes than the eight zones that returned in Mania (or many highlighted in this video) and I think the gameplay & physics are superior to most other 2D fangames. I'd highly recommend giving it a spin!

I heavily debated with myself whether to include levels from the Misfits Pack during development for this video, but ultimately I saw it as unfair to compare a mod that is "technically incompleted" against others that are 100% playable, hence why they are not mentioned.
The Ice Cap mod by McNuggie was originally in the list at the beginning, but after replaying all mods and comparing with each other, it did get kicked out unfortunately, but still a decent mod!
I've been meaning to try out Triple Trouble 16-bit Remake for quite a while now, since I have played the demos over the years, just been busy with life and haven't got around to it, but hopefully soon.
