I loved that part of the world, really friendly and polite people - when you get in a lift, they always say hello and goodbye - the infrastructure is really good - the one thing that surprised me was how well kept and maintained it was. I like the weather and the greenery, it rains at night and thunders and in the morning, the smell of the rain from the night before and the flora and fauna gave you a feeling of being glad to be alive.
I’m so happy for you both. My husband and I did what you’re now doing but it was 20 years ago and we were in our 40s. We slow traveled Latin America for 3 years and I cannot tell you what a great experience it was. It taught us how insulated most citizens of the US are. We learned that people everywhere are the same. Some good. Some bad. But, for the most part we all basically want the same thing. Love, and a happy life.
Hi Karen ! We are recently retired, at 55 and 60, and we are traveling between Mexico and Argentina for several years, in search of our favorite retirement city. After lots of research, Manizales is high on our list ( we are cool weather lovers ). We also look for cities that we feel we can live comfortably long term for $2000/month or less. We are currently living in Matagalpa, Nicaragua and our costs here are running about $1100/month ! We will be leaving here in February, hoping to do 6 months in Guatemala and 6 months in Mexico….then Manizales ! Great video ! Thx !

Such a great video! I LOVED Ecuador when I was there in 2012. The people are so beautiful & the natural landscapes are absolutely stunning. I didn't particularly like Cuena but, I did like Otavalo, Cotacachi & Chordaleg. I would like to visit Loja & Vilcabamba sometime in the future. One drawback for me, as a Canadian, is that they use the US dollar as their currency. I lose $0.25 to $0.30 on every dollar plus, I had a heck of a time trying to find an ATM that my Canadian bank card would work in. Bank of Bolivia ATMs were the only ones that worked for me. None of the Ecuador national banks would work with my card. And, just an observation, I find many Latinos using the term, "to take a decision". The correct form is "to make a decision". I/we made the decision to do something. I/we make decisions based on our likes & dislikes. You take a stand against something but, we make our own decisions. *BTW, good call on not buying a property. Hope that helps.

Completely understand your decision not to buy a house yet, although here in UK I'm always being asked when you are going to settle down and buy a house! I do point out you already have a house you rent out. I think it's very much a thing here to aspire to buying your own hime and perhaps isn't so important in it her parts of the world. A lot if people here are envious of your life style (which of course uf possible because if not owning a house !)
I think it's very much a thing everywhere. People expect a couple buy a house 🏠 because that's the thing they should aspire to do. Altough, I see more people our age deciding not to buy a house (for many different reasons)
I‘m German and lived in the UK for almost 13 years, and my peers’ need to buy a house once they hit 30, or to „get on the property ladder“ was what I considered the biggest cultural difference between the UK and the rest of northern and Central Europe. Virtually nobody I know who is under 60 owns a house in Germany, but the social security (including pensions) is much better and there are strict rules for rent and renting that favour tenants. Same for the Netherlands, Scandinavia, France etc.
Spanish in "Locombia" is quite a bit more formal than in Mexico - not nearly as much jerga (slang). It's more the "King's Spanish", even more so than in Spain itself...It depends on which part of Colombia you're in. On the coast, the costeños use the familar "tú" and associated verbage. In the interior, the paisas in Medellín and the Cafetero Region, and the cachacos or rolos in Bogotá use the formal "usted" without fail. This is regardless of age or status. If you watch Colombian television, you'll rarely hear a familiar "tú" reference, namely because the studios are all in Bogo. They don't generally use the "vos" conjugations either. The only place in South America that you'll hear that with regularity is Argentina. Sometimes you'll hear "¡Vos aver!" (You'll see!), but they use it as kind of a slang term...No worries though. If you "slip up", and use the familar form of speech in the DC, Cundinamarca, or Antioquia, it isn't a cardinal sin. But it will kind of "out" you as an outsider. Depending again on where, it might get you "special attention" in bad (rarely) or a good (quite often) way. Colombians are hospitable in the extreme...Enjoy Ecuador guys!... 🙂
I disagree with your mexico comment. Are you a native born mexican? Were you raised in Mexico? If your not then you don't know 100%. Reg Colombian spanish, why don't you guys pronounce the S in every word? It's so difficult to understand your Spanish when sounds are skipped. In mexico we pronounce every single word except for the H (bc its a universal Spanish rule, the H is always silent). So, not sure why you guys skip the S and some pronounce the R like an L, such as Puelto Lico instead of Puerto Rico. Or Ejta instead of Está, etc.

There are definitely some regions of Colombia where “vos” is used frequently, and doesn’t mark you as an outsider. Also, in addition to Argentina, vos is commonly used throughout Central America. But remember, it is the very familiar form, not one you would use when just meeting someone or with someone you barely know. It is used among close friends and family - but not towards your elder family members - that’s Usted.
Interesting that Dave feels there is a bigger difference between Spanish in Mexico and Colombia, than between English in the US/Canada and the UK. I wouldn’t agree, but maybe that’s because my first Spanish was most influenced by Central American Spanish, so I’m used to using both Ud and vos. In Mexico I’ve had friends ask me not to use Ud with them, because it makes them feel old! 😊 But I’ve realized I “code switch” automatically depending on who I’m hanging with. In Mexico, it’s a “refri”, “fri-JOL-es” and “elote”. When I’m with Colombians, it’s “la nevera”, “FRI-joles” and “mazorca” or “choclo” ( the last word depending on which part of Colombia you’re in).

His English is sometimes difficult to understand if one word out of a sentence i cannot distinguish exactly and does not always fit the context of the particular topic. Could you have stayed in Columbia, or was there a problem with this visa-wise? (By the way, one difference between Mexico and Ecuador is "citas"... about 3 out of every 5 tennis dates I had with locals to play on public courts in Quito, the guy would not even show up. In Mexico, only 1 in 5 are no-shows. Nearly always late in both countries, but at least the Mexicans do eventually show up. I did not bring my racquet on either of my two trips to Columbia, so I cannot compare, but I lived in Rio de Janeiro one winter, and people are very reliable about citas there, just like gringos.)
😮 In my experience, citas with Colombians are very reliable although they can be late like Mexicans. I think it's more or less the same. I'll see how in Ecuador works

Most British people would see themselves as expat because the word immigrant is too degrading and they are too special to call themselves that word. I live in the Uk 22 years here and I know what I am talking about. Another thing British people do they go to live in Spain don’t learn the language and laugh at Spanish people for no speaking good English 😂
If you listen to the video he says in Querétaro there is a big expat community . Most British people would see themselves as expat because the word immigrant is too degrading and they are too special to call themselves that word.
American are the same they could be living ages in a country and they are expats 😂😂
I went to university in the city where I live, one of my classmates was born in Brussels his dad and mum English and he would say to you he was an expat even though he was born in 🇧🇪 Belgium and was living there 😂😂😂
