  • Something I found out in the blue, so this was a song I never knew about. Please pardon for the sound and video not being in complete sync.
    And I thought young!Koji Tamaki couldn`t be handsomer, oh my, how wrong I was. There is something about stubbles/beard that gets to me...

      Perhaps I am. Koji's voice wasn't the only attractive thing about him. I love the way he moves along with the beat to the music and he looked quite dashing too (especially with that goatee).

    Yeah, that was pretty much me...totally blown away by his talent. Another thing that took me a good minute to reconcile with was how DIFFERENT he both looks and sounds throughout the years and decades.
    He's such a chameleon, and my sense is that when he's done with a certain phase of his life, he completely SEVERS it from his psyche. I don't get that sense of continuity from him, where he identifies with himself as the same person from one era to the next. I'm detached from the past, myself (once I process everything and learn the lessons, etc.), so if he *is* as I perceive him to be, then that's another reason why I like and identify with him as a person, in some respects.
    I went down a rabbit hole with his music that lasted MONTHS. He has such an extensive catalog that spans so many decades, and because his voice and style change so much, it's like listening to completely different artists.
    Enjoy your musical journey. :) We all tend to have a favorite Tamaki Koji period, as well. Mine is when he was in his 30s (well, from the beginning of his career to the end of his 30s). Everything up to the late 90s is excellent. After that, his vocal tone kinda deteriorates, though he still has vocal chops. The warmth just isn't there anymore, and the cragginess sets in.

    • @MoPoppins
      @MoPoppins 4 года назад +1

      Well, I wasn't wrong about everyone having a strong preference for one period or another, right? ;)
      I noticed that there was a period in his 50s(?) when his voice was weak and his face expressionless (maybe he was on meds that took away affect?), but the power is definitely back, and I'm happy to see that. He was made to move audiences with his voice, and he knows it. He's so present when he performs, and we can't help but feel whatever he wants us to feel. His musical compositions also mirror the emotions perfectly, which is why some fans will comment under the videos that they have NO idea what he's saying, but that they feel the emotions and find themselves in tears when listening to songs like "Melody" or "Ikanaide."
      I do love how he gets bored with one look, whether with hairstyles or wardrobe (though not big on mullets, but I get why he'd want to switch it up...and what a GLORIOUS head of hair that man has!). I like how he looked when he did the hits remake album and turned them into mellow, folky tunes ("Wine Red No Kokoro"). That long hair and goatee suited him...he looked quite yummy.
      People who keep reinventing themselves will always be relevant. And he's always been interested in eclectic styles of music or whatever else, which is why he appeals to my ear. I only discovered him at the beginning of 2019, and wow...I'm so glad I got to experience his career, albeit retrospectively. But what's interesting is that even his old footage feels current, and ever-relevant, esp. the stuff in the 90s. My sister sent me a link to a John Hoon song, where he was covering a Japanese artist. RUclips recommended this performance (ruclips.net/video/vEcMOJ0PnN4/видео.html) to me, and I've been hooked ever since. So glad I clicked on that link. Thumbnails are EVERYTHING. My gut told me that I would love him...he just looked so soulful and capable.
      How long had you been a fan before attending the live concert? And how would you describe the feeling of being there in person?

    • @MoPoppins
      @MoPoppins 4 года назад

      Silver Frost - I also like him with closely-cropped hair...makes him look handsome and manly (He sings Jirettai & Hitori Botchi No Yellu in this performance: ruclips.net/video/e9Wc5h_Xn-M/видео.html. It’s just that shaggy hair, where he looks like he just hadn’t gotten around to getting a haircut for a while (like in the Unplugged concert-where he yells a lot, but his voice really cuts through-that I don’t consider very becoming, since the layers are all grown out at different lengths. That’s the one where Koji’s wearing the small shades and Anzen Chitai were all in chambray/denim.).
      I discovered Anzen Chitai / Tamaki Koji only two months after you! I can’t believe I’d never heard of him/them, given their large body of work and prodigious talent that stands the test of time. I’m an 80s kid, and grew up watching Kohhaku and whatever was on NHK that aired in the States, so I knew about the Enka singers (Itsuki Hiroshi, ishikawa Sayuri, Mori Shinichi), as well as some of the pop idols (Nakamori Akina, Matsuda Seiko), all of whom he’d collabed with...I’d just never heard of HIM, even though he’s a household name in Japan, and made frequent appearances throughout the years on the top talk shows and weekly singing shows. I’m sure I would’ve loved his music even then. He knows how to make timeless music, and even though the 80s stuff sounds quintessentially 80s, it’s really top notch.
      Lol...I had the SAME reaction to Denen as your husband. It took a while for that wordy/busy song to grow on me, and now it’s one of my faves. I acquired an affinity for Koji’s music in stages. First, it was only the top hits from the 80s (I love you Kara Hajimeyou, Natsu No Owari No Harmony, Wine Red, Aoi Hitomi, Jirettai, Koi No Yokan, etc.) and the folky tearjerkers (Melody, Ano Koro E, Ikanaide), then when my need for novelty kicked in, my mind and heart made way for the rest.
      You know how (Japanese) people are always describing him as being “weird”? I don’t get it...which of his characteristics are they homing in on? His defenders would then respond to the “weirdo” comments with people needing to be different if they’re gonna be geniuses.
      Awwww...how sad for Tanaka Yuji. 😢 I hope he recovers. 🙏✨💕 I love the entire band, but he was the first one I noticed because he always played so joyfully. That boyish smile and energy of a man who knew he was lucky to get paid to play on the drums was contagious. The entire vibe of the band just makes me happy. 😀 It was lightning in a bottle that all of these talented guys found one another as tweens, and were able to maintain the core members for all these years, even through the hiatuses.
      I’m glad you got to experience them live. I find their sound and energy really ADDICTIVE (I have a Anzen Chitai / Tamaki Koji playlist that’s got about 24 hrs of music on it, and listened to only that on shuffle over a period of 4 days...never got bored of it)...it’s such a mind drug, and I can’t tear my ears away from it. Their music is both energetic AND chill at the same time, which makes it versatile for so many of life’s activities. Koji said in one interview that he seeks to create a transportive, fantasy-esque experience, and his music surely achieves those objectives.
      I know he really wanted to break into the US market, but this country wasn’t ready for Asian pop stars back then. If they were, he would’ve been HUGE here. I’m curious to know how the non-Japanese fans discovered him. Was it RUclips algorithms, as what happened w/ me on that serendipitous day?

    • @MoPoppins
      @MoPoppins 4 года назад +1

      Silver Frost - I’m turning 45 next month, and based on the pop cultural references you shared about him, that was my guess, as well.
      I’d consider his hair on the long-ish side for both of the links you shared. In that second one of the 2010 performance, the band sounds great, but his voice still hadn’t returned, and he looks a bit like Fat Elvis...lol. I don’t know who’s idea it was for him to dye his hair jet black, and then to spray and tease it so he’d look like an aging 80s-era rocker, but that was definitely one of the misses, appearance-wise.
      Here’s the link again. You’ve probably seen him rotate this hairstyle throughout the years: ruclips.net/video/e9Wc5h_Xn-M/видео.html. Here’s one from a Music Fair appearance that was probably around the same era: ruclips.net/video/yjmMNXrByh4/видео.html (cue to 2 min 45 sec).
      I was never immersed in Japanese culture, so I’m not familiar with any of the anime stuff (plus, I was never around Japanese kids). All Japanese people probably know the people I mentioned. They’re all household names. Kinda like not knowing who Beyoncé or Britney Spears or other Top-40 artists are.
      I looked up Crystal King. It looks like that was during Koji’s hair band era.
      Has Tanaka Yuji lost a lost of his motor functioning from the stroke? Is his restaurant a business he runs day-to-day? I do hope he experiences a miraculous recovery, if that stroke was severe. He has a lot to live for, so hopefully that determination will fuel his recovery.
      In the Unplugged concert era, I think he was doing doramas. There was one where he played a cabbie who became obsessed with a celebrity singer(?) who was his customer one night. I didn’t watch it, but saw a tiny bit of the video. He had the same hair in that dorama, so maybe it was for his character?
      I did come across that “Suki Sa” anime video, around the beginning of my journey of discovery. Fitting, given the dreamy and fantastical qualities of Anzen Chitai’s music.
      I was wondering how well-known they were to the general Japanese populace. I guess they’ll always have their lifelong fans, but that partly explains why I hadn’t heard of them sooner. His fans often laud him as Japan’s #1 singer, and they wouldn’t be wrong (he could tie with others, but his tone, technique and execution couldn’t be beat). Whenever he performed duets with other artists, aside from 2 or 3 that I’ve come across, I don’t understand why the other performers singing with him weren’t embarrassed for themselves...lol.

    • @MoPoppins
      @MoPoppins 4 года назад +1

      Silver Frost - Well...technically, your husband and I would probably be considered to be of the same generation, since we would’ve had exposure to the same media during that time (if we grew up in the same country). Five years is a lot when you’re a kid, but when it comes to cultural references, there’s usually about a 10 - 20 yr span where people will be familiar with the same music, movies, etc. Only difference is on one end of the spectrum is young grade schoolers, and on the other end college-age people.
      I can think of four duets that were excellent, which just happen to be with women:
      * “サーチライト” with Ayaka - ruclips.net/video/_J4e7-gEWes/видео.html
      * Music Fair program with マリン - ruclips.net/video/QOdVq4BsGrA/видео.html
      * Music Fair with 石川さゆり - ruclips.net/video/3nM7LeINzMI/видео.html
      * Top Live with 香西かおり(& other guests) - ruclips.net/video/zMNpjw7XhH0/видео.html (from 11:10)
      They were matched in vocal ability, so it wasn’t cringey. I can’t even bring myself to finish the videos with bad duets. I might just scrub forward to the parts where Koji sings alone, but like you said, the other singer just sounds like BAD karaoke. I can even believe they have singing careers and FANS of their own. On a side note, speaking of bad singers, I don’t get why SMAP even has fans. Kimu-taku is the best one, but he’s still only ok. And with 5 guys, you’d think they’d be given harmonies, but they all sing in UNISON, and sound like they’re doing drunk karaoke! 🎤
      As for collabs with younger artists (Ayaka is a lot younger, who’s just gotten better & better w/ age, and you can see the love and respect they have for one another as fellow singers and songwriters), he seems to always be mentoring them, but regarding ability level, I don’t think he’s threatened by anyone. He looks and sounds more labored now when he sings, but he’s still historically been the best singer whenever he’s shared a stage with others. Working with current artists is a good way for him to stay in the public eye and remain relevant. It’s probably a nice ego boost, as well, since they think he’s like a god.
      I remember from various interviews that they’d talk about how much he ate. What’s interesting about him-and again, this goes back to him being a chameleon-he doesn’t necessarily look like a “fat” person, per se, when he gains weight, but like a different person altogether. That’s why it took me a few days to realize that these “guys” who sang well were all just HIM at various ages and weights...lol. I thought he looked like a granny during this time in his life, since his face is so soft and round: ruclips.net/video/7tQA2IVcRDU/видео.html. I was looking for some common features to unite the faces, but it’s like they all morph into someone else’s face.
      I haven’t heard of these artists before that you’re mentioning, so thanks for the education. I’m not into this kind of rock, but at least I get to familiarize myself with other artists. Koshi Inaba does wail, but still has that Asian artist sound. I think it’s the way he vocalizes the lyrics (choppy? staccato?). Even when Koji was doing more rock stuff in the 80s, he had a really smooth, soulful delivery. I think that’s why his vocals just grabbed my ears right away.
      I hope he does continue to do collabs, so each of their fans can discover new music, but I do wish he aimed higher. I would think that he has a lot of clout, with all of his talent, so maybe he should run his options by someone else with higher standards. 🤷‍♀️

      I don't understand why SMAP had/has so many fangirls, either. Is it their personalities? Kimutaku is really the only conventionally cute one.
      I really don't think age is an issue for music collabs. It just doesn't work when the caliber of artists don't match. Even artists from different genres could work out...just depends on how they creatively mesh the different styles.
      I listened to SO much Anzen Chitai/Tamaki Koji this year, too! It's been a while since I obsessed over an artist this much.
      I had to look up visual kei. Yet another one of those things that are "too" Japanese for me to have known about. Our musical tastes differ somewhat, but it's always interesting for me to learn about new stuff, and to find out where I have similarities with someone, as well as differences. I've always liked songs with strong melodies that could be sung w/o accompaniment, and that pretty much encompasses Koji's songwriting approach.
      I'm so grateful that this musical gift has been DROPPED into my life. I also was able to learn some more Japanese from watching his interviews and looking up the definitions of words in his lyrics. It's been fun traveling through the decades with his music.
      The cool thing with music is that it (along with food) are the TRUE world ambassadors, and they transcend time. If you like classical music or even popular music from early 20th century, you probably wouldn't think about how you might be its youngest fan. Some things are just timeless and universal. Koji loves traveling and exploring world cultures, so his various influences broaden his appeal, at least from a musical aesthetic. I think that if more people knew about him, he'd have more fans from around the world.
      Do you know if he's gaining new fans through his collabs with these young idol groups? I remember watching some talk show that aired probably past 2015, and when he tried singing "Natsu No Owari No Harmony" with the audience, he didn't get much participation, since most of them were probably in their 20's - 30's. They just weren't familiar with this classic show-closer.
