  • In this course, Aline Abler gives an introduction to Tiling Window Managers. Slides are available here: thealternative....
    Tiling Window Managers allow you to control your graphical interface using your keyboard in a more intuitive way. They are highly configurable, and there are many different implementations out there. We will show you a selection of them, to help you find the Window Manager that best fits your needs.
    Once you learn how to use them, Tiling Window Managers can have a great impact on your productivity. Have a look at them, and find a complete new way of controlling your device!
    Covered Tiling Window Managers: bspwm, dwm, Xmonad, i3, awesome, herbstluftwm
    This course is part of the LinuxDays of the student association TheAlternative.ch, the digital arm of [project21]. In the digital age, we want to draw attention to a sustainable interaction with knowledge and culture. We want to encourage usage and comprehension of Free and Open Source Software (also known as FOSS) as an alternative to proprietary software, as well as promote similar open alternatives in other areas.
    Our LinuxDays are a series of events designed to introduce Linux to beginners and help those who already have it enhance their knowledge. They are created mainly for users of other operating systems who want to discover and/or eventually switch to Linux. We start all the way from the bottom and guide you on your way up to a safer and more comfortable digital lifestyle.
    In our courses, we cover philosophical aspects as well as technical content. Users already familiar to Linux can jump in at any time to learn more about the wonders of Linux and Free Software. During our Install Events, we will personally assist you in installing Linux on your laptop. Don't worry - of course you can keep your existing OS and additionally use Linux if you want to.
    After visiting our courses, you will not only have an easy-to-use and efficient operating system on your computer, but also know how to get the best out of it and find more information on your own in case you are enticed with Linux. You don't have to worry about the limits and costs of proprietary software anymore.
    All students of Zürich may attend our events for free. In consideration of international participants, all courses are held in English.

Props to Aline for the presentation -- even though I've already used AwesomeWM as my preferred WM for a year, I've learnt many new things about TWMs from this, really appreciate it. :)

    No time to watch it all now - past 3 am and I should work tomorrow - but watched first hour and saving it to watch later. I'm just playing around with i3 (trying Arch with it on an old Thinkpad x230) and while I couldn't initially understand why would anyone want a tiling WM it kind of starts to make sense. I don't know if I will really switch main computers as well but it's intrigueing on laptop especially when you don't have a mouse anyway and trackpads suck.
    Explanations and demo are pretty cool, well done!

      Funnily this popped up again in my recommendations. I occasionally still use Windows (to play a game) but I am using Manjaro on my desktop, Arch on a notebook, Endeavour on another, and I use i3 or i3-gaps on all of them. It just kind of makes more sense than moving windows and resizing them all day long. Especially on a desktop, with 2 monitors and virtual desktops it's just the best.

    Guess I'm first to see this, I'm a BSPWM user, but have also used AwesomeWM for a while. I really like bspwms flexibility, but as you kind of explained, out of the box it might feel useless depending on what kind of linux user you are. In fact it is not useless at all. If you like to have a minimal desktop you can just start using it, but then you wont have a panel so you get no visual feedback. That's why I started with AwesomeWM, it is also super flexible and offers a lot of stuff out of the box, but I dont like lua config at all, and I really dig the preselection feature of BSPWM which allows me to forget about layout types alltogether. Maybe a disadvantage to this is that you need to remember a lot of hotkey-combinations. If you ask me what the hotkeys are.. I have no idea, it's all muslce memory!
    Nice explanation on why one would pseudo-tiling-mode... 1:51:06 Java....

    I3 is my choice, hands down. It makes the most sense, although I do love the tags feature of the other window managers. What we need is a really elegant merge of the tiling and floating window managers. Tile where it makes sense. Float where it makes sense. Keep the desktop organized and efficient for the user.
    To reduce the number of keyboard shortcuts one has to remember, integrate gestures from special devices that have sensors that we could attach to our hands. Don't forget voice control, too, although I can live withoutit. My hope is that the i3 team adds the most valuable features of the other window managers, but keep its pure tree layout.

    This is really nice. I have used notion for a while. It has the concept of static tiles which may not have a window. It also has tabbed windows. Where multiple windows in a tile are tabbed.
    One problem I have with tree layout is the user needs to be aware of the tree and decompile it based on the current view. This can be difficult to do.

    1:06:00 Plan 9 does that, not because muh fancy feature, but because that's just the natural way to do graphics in Plan 9. Why write boilerplate to create a window when a window already exists? A window manager in Plan 9 is basically a tmux for graphical displays.

    • @smorrow
      @smorrow 5 лет назад

      You could also say a program inherits the window from the parent (the shell) through fork the same way it gets its std* file descriptors.

    • @DVRC
      @DVRC 3 года назад

      Plan 9 is underrated. And that's a shame, considering it was basically a revamp of Bell UNIX to make it simpler, more portable (even the compilers and the C language changes a bit), and with both network and graphics in mind (after the experience with Blit terminals).

    partially covered windows can be useful for copying information from them when other information is also needed, and means websites or UIs with static margins will not squish the content you care about into a tiny column. however, any Stacking WM without robust tiling features is useless, because yo spend too much time trying to scale windows. so while Tiling WMs are inspiration for many extensions i use, i still prefer being able to hide some windows behind others and then use either a keyboard shortcut or in Windows with a Taskbar Tweaker app, use a scroll up on the windows i want to pull them to foreground efficiently, without fumbling around with stacked icons and sequential lists.

  • @laughingvampire7555
    @laughingvampire7555 Год назад

    I have 25 windows opened in my stacking desktop right now, this is why I don't use twms because with this many windows I would need multiple desktops for this much windows. and the standard wm algorithms work great on a small screen, a laptop screen, but in a big screen they don't. I guess I will have to code my own with DWM/XMonad

    I have been using i3 for like a year now, and I am quite happy with it. However, there is one thing that I am frequently annoyed by and where I haven't found a way to configure it differently yet:
    When I press a keyboard shortcut to open a new window that takes some time to initialize, and during initializing I switch to another workspace, it gets opened on the new workspace instead of on the one I was on when I pressed the shortcut. How are the other twms behaving in this situation? Is there a window manager where you can easily configure this?

    • @sandro-here
      @sandro-here  5 лет назад

      Hi Martin! Thanks for your input! This is Aline's reply to your comment:
      In theory, i3 has support for opening a window on the workspace which was active at the time you run the command. This is automatically done if you use the "exec" directive in your i3 config file.
      However, there is a caveat: this functionality relies on startup notifications, which are the responsibility of the program you're starting. If your program does not support startup notifications, then this will not work. There is unfortunately no easy fix for that within i3.
      As for other WMs, I must admit I don't know if they can handle this better.

However there are certain features i wish ubuntu could adopt like - when you open a program , linux should know to automatically use the left half of the screen and move all the other windows already open as horizontal slices of the right half. 'Intelligent window placement' instead of just opening the new window like a big plop into the middle of everything. Do you know of any way to make ubuntu a little more polite?

      Hi, I'm not aware of a hybrid window manager excelling at both tiling and stacking. Nor do I have any experience with smarter stacking window managers. Maybe someone else has an idea to share? Regarding your kids, I'd recommend you install both a tiling and a standard window manager. You can then choose which one to start at the login screen (e.g. lightdm).

    • @sandro-here

      Personally, I'm using Arch because of the AUR. It's convenience I haven't found anywhere else. However, I love Debian for its reliability and completeness, it's a very thought-through system. I wish I could combine the comfort and the reliability of both, but they are probably contradictory.

    • @borekstvorek

      kalsan15 aaah, I completely see why you said That! Unfortunately for me, when I was using arch aur didn't seem as complete to me as debian repos.. however, that may have changed or there could be other aspects to it. Funny enough besides me thinking aur is not good enough, I found the system itself nice and easy enough to learn

    • @sandro-here

      It's very complete now, but lacking stability and security. It's sad that a "Debian DUR" is strictly against the Debian mentality and I'm still searching for a solution in between...
