Back in the 70,s I worked as a consultant in the audio industry in Toronto. At the end of this video you showed shots of a bunch of units. I found myself yelling out the model numbers as they came into view. This is why I am a subscriber and love your descriptions of the units operations. You and I are both vintage units

Good timing! I am in the process of refurbishing my Spec1, Spec 2 , CT-F1000 and HPM-150's that I bought in 1978. Back then, I was the service tech at a hi-fi store, and all of the major manufacturers offered a 50% discount to employees of their retailers! I bought all of this plus a Pioneer electronic crossover, a Marantz tuner and a Marantz power amp for only $2000. What a deal! Glad I hung on to it all.

When I was 15 instead of buying a car I bought a high end Pioneer system. My friends thought I was crazy. But to this day, half a century later, I still remember hearing it for the first time, the music filled the room as if the musicians on the record were in the room...incredible. Been a audiophile ever since...was a musician at the time and 10 years later became a audio engineer. But just the cosmetics of the components in those day were beautiful and exciting to look at. Big VU meters, aluminum panel and knobs and those fantastic feeling switches. I sure miss the look of these.

"Mono left," "mono right," etc., were of considerable use to audiophiles who had high-end preamps and integrated amplifiers from the 1960's and 1970's. In particular, you'd use this option for playing LP's.
Many record collectors, particularly fans of classical music, who were a majority of the customers for high-end audio equipment, had a large number of monaural records. And until the early 1970's, a fair number of LP's were issued separately in both monaural and stereo, with the stereo records commanding a premium of $1.00 per LP. A 1970 dollar is worth almost $8 today.
And sound engineering of early stereo classical LP's sounded unconvincing: all too many records were engineered with exaggerated, ping-pongy separation. Listening to some records was like listening to a tennis match. This doesn't bother non-classical listeners, but it drives classical listeners frantic. So having a "mono left + right" option made unlistenable stereo records listenable in monaural.
Another abomination of early stereo was reissuing remastered recordings in pseudo-stereo, where all the high frequencies were shoved into the left channel and the low frequencies were shoved into the right channel. Even today, I listen to such records in monaural mode.
In addition, earlier turntables and cartridges, even high-end ones, were not kind to records, so in mistracking and groove damage to one wall or the other of the groove was common. "Mono left" or "mono right" let you select the better side of the record groove.
Just a little bit of history from when dinosaurs stalked the earth.

You're very lucky to find such great sounding hifi equipment. I just started collecting simple vintage receivers. I currently have 5 receivers in my possession. I recently got hold of a victor CD-4 GX-450 receiver and when I switch it on there is a crackling sound coming from the speakers also when you turn it off. You professional advice will be very much appreciated Sir. Thank you in advance.

Thank you for watching. I have some pretty beat up equipment also that I work just as hard on. My next video will show the repair of one of those. Pops and crackles of this sort are many times noisy transistors, or it could be a power supply issue, but if you have not cleaned the controls with deoxit do that first. It's hard to say for sure.

Back in the day when McIntosh Labs had their traveling road show HiFi clinics I brought my Spec 1 and 2 to be tested. After running them through the tests the tech took a step back and exclaimed, "I didn't know the Japanese could build stuff this good! The distortion is below the residuals of my test equipment!" With a preamp of this quality the tone controls/filters were rarely used. It was expected that owning such equipment spoke well of the owner that they would be listening "on the flat" and not need tone controls. The only feature missing on the preamp was a "Loudness" control. It would have been nice to be able to turn it down and still get some bass response. When I was buying it was a hard choice between the Pioneer and Sansui. Guess the handles sold me and the WAF went way down when I set it up in the living room.

Computer motherboard manufacturers switched from regular electrolytic caps to solid caps over 10 years ago. According to articles I have read, "solid capacitors are far more robust, in addition to their extended life span (23 years) they don't have any liquid components so they don't leak or exhibit the tendency to corrode, bulge and burst and can sustain heavy use for much longer period and can operate efficiently under harsh temperatures." Would it be beneficial to replace old stereo gear electrolytic caps with solid caps ?

    • @johnnyg1700

My personal opinion would be not to use them as they are more suited to digital electronics where they work really well. I've tried them in analogue circuits such as pre-amps for by-passing and they sound lifeless (Os-Cons).

I really enjoy your videos and after retiring from auto mechanics have decided to teach myself to do audio equipment repairs. What I find the most frustrating is sourcing transistors. Alot of them are no longer available and so the search begins for equivalents. Do you have all the transistors and capacitors in your possession and would you recommend a starter kit of both caps and transistors or do you put a list together for each unit and then order them? Thanks.

First of all I'm a hobbyist not a professional. Whenever I do anything that's a "can I do this?" I consult with people that have forgotten more then I'll ever know about audio design and repair. Just in a nutshell almost all of the modern transistors are superior in almost every area to vintage transistors. Again this is not my conclusion as audio engineering/design is not my profession but is the opinion of professionals that I am in contact with. From my experience of "doing what I'm told" of using modern transistors in vintage audio equipment I've never had an issue in the 15 years or so that I've been restoring equipment.

Where do you source your replacement parts? I’m looking at refurbishing an old Hafler 500 I built and just replaced the foam surrounds on my old 901 series IVs with cloth type. The Hafler was able to support the headroom necessary for the Bose active equalizer input. I’m sure the old caps are probably in need of replacement. It’s been a while but I do still have all the essentials except I gave my oscilloscope to a friend since I wasn’t using it.

What I've never understood is, are there really any advantages to owning a separate power amp, preamp, and tuner, versus just a receiver? Given that so many receivers are widely respected and even worshipped, especially the monster receivers. So how are separate components better, if at all?

To understand the pre-amp, understand that a separate power amp of the day has only a single input and output. I have one of these and a matching power amp. The pre-amp has all of the source inputs (turntable, tape deck, etc) and acts as a pre-amp for the phono input since turntables of the day typically didn't have them. It sends then a single output to the power amp. Power amp output goes back to the pre-amp for speaker output. You can attach speakers directly to the power amp - but then the headphone jack on the per-amp doesn't work and you can only power one set of speakers from the power amp.
A receiver tends to combine all of these things together in one unit with a radio receiver.

Has anyone ever heard any day and night difference over re-capping the crossover in speakers?

    • @vintageaudioaddict
      @vintageaudioaddict  4 года назад

Re-capping any piece of electronics, it's as much about making the equipment reliable as the sound improvements that may or may not come with it. All electrolytic capacitors fail at some point but they don't all blow up the same or start sounding bad at the same time. They will all fail at some point in some way. This is why I don't try to question the manufacturers data and I replace the old electrolytic capacitors.

I had 2 recapped crossovers for my Pioneer HPM-900's, recapped with mostly identical values. Still had the original un-recapped crossover's inside the speaker, I was very skeptical of replacing the original with the new. So i pulled 1 out & replaced it & left the other original, OMG what a huge difference, I had the other crossover out & replaced in a heartbeat. It's a fact capacitors don't last forever. These vintage pieces need recapped!

Dear VINTAGE: On my Spec 1 Pre- amp, a problem has occurred. If or when I turn the 100 hz Bass control knob to 'plus', there is then what soon becomes a violent 'hum buzz' coming out of the speaker(s). The 'hum' starts out low, but then builds and builds and gets louder and louder (as if the speakers are going to Blow) so I (of course) turn the bass knob back to zero. I have the Spec 2 Amp. Also, the tape monitor switch does not appear to be functioning. I had the unit in storage for some time and then shipped to new my new home address. Other than the 'building hum', and the tape monitor switch not working, everything else is fine. Any trouble shooting thoughts? Thanks :)
