'Terrifying': Florida cleanup begins after Hurricane Idalia devastation

- Recovery efforts are underway at Hurricane Idalia devastated Florida's Big Bend Wednesday, leaving a path of destruction across the northern part of the state.
WCNC Charlotte's Richard DeVayne was in Charleston, where officials said the fifth-highest storm surge was recorded during Idalia. Fortunately, the floodwaters were receding by 6 a.m. as the rain had mostly stopped with the storm pushing north. Forecaster Larry Sprinkle said Idalia will continue to bring rain to the Outer Banks throughout the day but should be completely out of North Carolina by Thursday afternoon.
There's a Flood Watch in effect for areas southeast of Charlotte until 8 p.m. Thursday.
Idalia made landfall along Florida's Big Bend area around 7:45 a.m. Wednesday as a strong Category 3 hurricane. Idalia had estimated wind speeds of around 125 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. Idalia's landfall happened at Keaton Beach in Taylor County, which is near the city of Perry. #Hurricane #Weather #Idalia

I live 5 miles inland and went through 3 hurricanes. I’ve yet to see any storm surge. I can’t figure out why.
That's because you are far enough from a storm surge but you still could have flooding if you live in a flood zone or you could have wind damage (from strong sustained winds or wind gusts or possible tornadoes). There is always a risk. Glad you and your family are okay.
Says alot about human beings. We know hurricanes happen in this area, yet people make their home there. Its almost as silly as feeling sorry for people that suffered volcano damage in their home. .....

If you are wealthy (skyrocket house insurance prices in FL, very expensive state right now to live) and want to build a sturdy house (hurricane force winds resistant, storm surge above the ground resistant) near the coast, it's fine. Otherwise better stay far away from any possible near future suffering. I'm so sorry for the ones who lost their homes and/or beloved ones.

Just glad most everyone made it through safely. As someone who worked emergency mgt in Fl for over 25yrs: I DO have 1 comment: media and creators here on YT like to pump up and fearmonger about the winds. Over 96% of deaths, damage and injuries from these storms are due to WATER, NOT WIND! I’m not trying to negate the wind damage; but I saw some of these same towns disappear in ‘85 after Elena just skimmed the coast because of both storm surge AND rain amounts. The loss of life was MUCH greater back then and our S & R teams got into some extremely dangerous situations because folks refused to evacuate. Hopefully THIS storm is teaching a new generation the danger of these rising waters!
Tell that to the people who went through Andrew. I promise if you were in Homestead that night, you'd never forget the sound of a train surrounding your house as the windows blow out and you hear your walls and roof giving out. Big difference between 120mph occasional gusts and constant 170 mph winds. Thankfully there hasn't been anything like Andrew since. Wind alone turned Dade county into a nuclear bomb site.
@@Trahzy I WAS in Homewood; it was the last storm in Florida I worked. As I said, I am NOT negating wind damage either by the storms themselves, or the frequent break-out tornadoes and water spouts. I had stayed with my best friend a few days before the storm hit..I remember her street because they also had severe wind damage..SW 296th.
HOWEVER, we also dealt with flooding from storm surge and rain after Andrew; we had to rescue numerous people in cars that had decided to try driving through flooded streets and ending up in the canals/ponds/ditches/swamps.
Overal, taking all major storms into consideration, in Florida AND other states; water is still the largest cause of lost lives, injuries/near-drownings and damage. The large majority of these deaths and injuries WERE PREVENTABLE. There are always exceptions..Katrina, (which I was asked to assist, but couldn’t due to health issues)-THAT was a failure on so many levels, books are written on it. Wind damage in Andrew was certainly extreme-much of it due to substandard housing (Homewood) AND there were certainly failures before and after the storm. I understand it’s uncomfortable, but when you’re talking about warnings, availability of shelters and/or transportation to and from shelters; primary low-income and minority communities are always the most affected.. Unfortunately, as I was made aware this week by former colleagues and friends in N Fl…it remains an issue. 😔
The vast majority of the big strong concrete buildings are fine. It’s all those little “cardboard” ones that are the problem.

I watched this all taking place on CNN! It was stressful! Can’t understand why the heck anyone with a brain would want to stay there?! 🤷♀️Have you people literally lost your minds?! They professionals stated that this was very serious & that it could easily be un-survivable!!! And to PLEASE GET OUT OF THERE IMMEDIATELY! What part of not leaving your house & saving your life or lives don’t you people understand?! For those who left the area completely to be safe & far away from any possible serious major damage & danger ⚠️good for you! There was a guy who road it out on his boat & later stated that it was a very scary situation to experience! The water was much stronger & higher than he’d expected to actually experience. He survived in order to be interviewed via phone; but still: “stupid is as stupid does!” Nothing material is worth losing your life over! But people are gonna do foolish things anyways, So…?!
