I wish I had a door where I could jump into a sealed 90s dimension, where my family, everything was the same as it was back then.
Because, you see, I like both eras of my life. This is the adult era and I've had more than I ever had in life. Not even counting materialistic things.

I loved watching both series, but Are You Afraid of the Dark was definitely scarier. Even the intro was more scary than Goosebumps. I will say that Goosebumps had some good scares but Are You Afraid of the Dark was far scarier. Tale of the Dead Man's Float gave me nightmares and made me fear pools.
And everytime I heard Are You Afraid of the Dark's intro as a kid, I was just spooked instantly I always thought that something was going to grab me while I watched that intro. Chills

Gotta give it to you there. Goosebumps has a better standings with the books while AYAotD comes out on top on TV. Though I really do wish they gave Goosebumps a reboot like they did with the new series of AYAotD. I loved the books and I'd love to see more books adapted to screen and I'm not talking I'm the way they did with the modern movies.

Are you Afraid of the Dark was the show, that got me interested in Horror when i was 7. For a horror show that was geared towards younger people, it really did some dark stuff at times and the characters where unforgettable for me.
When i watched Goosebumps at some point later, it just didn't felt the same. The whole atmosphere was a bit too cartoony to really scare me. Though, there where a few episodes i also found memorable.
If it wasn't for AyAotD, who knows if i would be as interested in horror right now.

The thing is Goosebumps was scary, but Are You Afraid of The Dark was just dark. Goosebumps tried to be scary but not go into too dark of topics like abuse or divorce, but Are You Afraid of The Dark handled the more mature topics that Goosebumps didn’t. Part of that might be because Goosebumps has child protagonists while Are You Afraid has teen and adult protagonists.

"Goosebumps" is largely more well-known because of its creator, R.L.Stine, who had already published many horror books geared toward young adults. Stine is also American, although the series was filmed in Canada,. "Are You Afraid Of The Dark?" often dealt with more mature themes. Both were great shows but AYAOTD is my favorite.

Are You Afraid of the Dark was by far the scariest and most atmospheric kids horror show. You just got sucked in to some of the stories and were genuinely frightened and unnerved by some of the twists and turns. The Tale of Dark Music has one of the best twists ever and The Tale of the Phantom Cab was an excellent first episode that made sure I never forgot the answer to that one particular riddle.

I'm sorry, but nothing was scarier than Goosebumps to a kid. Even the Horrorland episode, which this video claims is silly and campy, was very scary to me as a kid, because I KNEW that R L Stine wasn't afraid to make things have a horrible turn. Goosebumps was rooted in that fear that things would turn out badly in the end, which is a route AYAOTD mostly didn't take. Another facet of Goosebumps that was far scarier was the common trend of children trying to communicate their fears to parents who refused to believe their kids. A truly horrifying concept for children. And let's be honest... Goosebumps had so many monsters and villains that would legitimately kill you, harm you, haunt you, lock you away forever. AYAOTD most of the time had a moderately safe ending.

I was born in '89 & can't recall a time without AYAOTD & it being the centerpiece of my Saturday night & SNICK (& this was the early days when SNICK was, no pun intended, literally All That). I was young enough when the Goosebumps books came out to have them read to be before bed, and I loved them. I distinctly remember watching the Haunted Mask when it premiered & my Dad taping it. It was like an event, and probably the only time my Dad ever watched either show/I got to watch them outside of my room.
I always really liked Goosebumps, the series and books, as a whole, but my loyalty & heart will always go to AYAOTD everytime. Not only because it was the first, the original but Goosebumps always seemed on the more outrageous, sometimes goofy side. Chilling, but goofy. I also didn't realize til watching again in my 20s how almost all the endings are kind of ominous or up in the air. While neither opening gave me nightmares, AYAOTD was way more spooky to me. AYAOTD was also more about the story and storytelling imho. I'm much more for a good ghost story than gnomes from he'll running around. Ive always thought Goosebumps was more like the Outer Limits to AYAOTD's Twilight Zone.
Either way I think those of us that grew up in the 90s were extremely lucky to have had them, because at the end of the day they were different enough that there was room for both

For me, it was the moment from Season 1 Episode 2 of Are You Afraid Of The Dark called "The Tale Of Laughing In The Dark" when Josh is in his bedroom talking to Weegee on a landline telephone and someone picks up a landline phone and starts talking to both Josh and Weegee with a really creepy voice. Josh realizes that the other person didn't pick up the phone at Weegee's house, therefore whoever picked up the landline phone had to be downstairs inside Josh's own house. Josh runs to his bedroom door and pushes the latch closed locking the door one second before the creepy carney or Zeebo slams into Josh's bedroom door trying to get in. Then a purple balloon blow up under the crack of his door that says, "GIVE IT BACK!" which pops after he sees it. I was eight years old watching this episode of Are You Afraid Of The Dark and this scene gave me nightmares for a couple of days!!!!

90's kids shows were some of the best shows ever. Personally I was more of a fan of ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK but loved 80's of GOOSEBUMPS episodes. I own both series on DVD an enjoy eating them all year an sharing my childhood with my nieces an nephews. Someone make a time machine so I can relive my youth!

My brothers and I LOVED Are You Afraid Of The Dark, our parents set up the basement like a living room so on Saturday night one of us would be in the basement and call up to the other 2 to come down to watch. We would shut the lights off.

Are You Afraid of the Dark I like, but Goosebumps is one of the biggest childhood things I grew up loving. Love the books and the tv show. To me Goosebumps beats Are You Afraid of the Dark.

Okay, Goosebumps was great, but I still couldn’t resist the scares of Are You Afraid Of The Dark? Especially to this day. It was the highlight of the 90s, no doubt. My childhood is forever engraved with these shows. They had something different to offer, never losing steam, figuratively speaking, of course.

Are you afraid of the dark was much memorable to me, I loved goosebumps but it lacked in alot of episodes, I felt like are you afraid of the dark had you sitting on the edge of your chair, and at the end when they put the fire out, it just made you think about the whole episode while you went to bed, it use to come on at like 8 at night and we had to go to bed at 9

Both shows are cheesy, but I still love them. Are you afraid of the dark is absolutely scarier but goosebumps is overall better Story-wise and because of the material they transferred from some of my favourite books. Also Goosebumps Villains are Top-notch whereas the majority of AYAOTD's Villains are rather lacklustre.

Love the video Phoebe, but you drastically undersold the impact of Are You Afraid of the Dark due to one major factor: if Are You Afraid of the Dark hadn't been such a massive hit for Nickelodeon, showcasing the popularity potential for a young adult anthology horror series, there is no guarantee that FOX Kids greenlights Goosebumps.
