Part of that might be because Goosebumps has child protagonists while Are You Afraid has teen and adult protagonists.
"Goosebumps" is largely more well-known because of its creator, R.L.Stine, who had already published many horror books geared toward young adults. Stine is also American, although the series was filmed in Canada,. "Are You Afraid Of The Dark?" often dealt with more mature themes. Both were great shows but AYAOTD is my favorite.
Yeah that was a major goal of mine for a time but proved to be an impossible feat so I let it go after tiring of being jealous of others who were able to accomplish it lol
T.V show vs T.V show, AYAotD definitely was the better one. However, I read all the Goosebumps books as a child. A number of them were truly chilling (like say cheese and die for example). I think being able to interpret the story yourself vs a screen adaptation interpreting it for you is what made is so much scarier though.

Goosebumps was rooted in that fear that things would turn out badly in the end, which is a route AYAOTD mostly didn't take. A truly horrifying concept for children. And let's be honest... Goosebumps had so many monsters and villains that would legitimately kill you, harm you, haunt you, lock you away forever. For me, it was the moment from Season 1 Episode 2 of Are You Afraid Of The Dark called "The Tale Of Laughing In The Dark" when Josh is in his bedroom talking to Weegee on a landline telephone and someone picks up a landline phone and starts talking to both Josh and Weegee with a really creepy voice. Josh realizes that the other person didn't pick up the phone at Weegee's house, therefore whoever picked up the landline phone had to be downstairs inside Josh's own house. Josh runs to his bedroom door and pushes the latch closed locking the door one second before the creepy carney or Zeebo slams into Josh's bedroom door trying to get in. Are You Afraid of the Dark I like, but Goosebumps is one of the biggest childhood things I grew up loving. Love the books and the tv show. To me Goosebumps beats Are You Afraid of the Dark.
Okay, Goosebumps was great, but I still couldn’t resist the scares of Are You Afraid Of The Dark? Especially to this day. It was the highlight of the 90s, no doubt. My childhood is forever engraved with these shows. They had something different to offer, never losing steam, figuratively speaking, of course.
Are you afraid of the dark was much memorable to me, I loved goosebumps but it lacked in alot of episodes, I felt like are you afraid of the dark had you sitting on the edge of your chair, and at the end when they put the fire out, it just made you think about the whole episode while you went to bed, it use to come on at like 8 at night and we had to go to bed at 9
I remember being legitimately scared by the Goosebumps moments with: 1) The monstrous floating masks 2) The haunted dark ride that two kids rode through (Forgot both episode names)
I love both goosebumps and and are you afraid of the dark these shows are my favorite of all time and what made me fall in love with horror and scary ghost stories for life.
The Midnight Madness episode of Are you Afraid of the Dark still holds up. Nosferatu is just downright terrifying. The Goosebumps books influenced my childhood more than the show did. Are you Afraid of the Dark is just so iconic in youth horror. I miss it.
I was in my 20s when both of these shows came out, but I had a younger brother who I was (and still am) very, very close with. I’m like his second mom. We have such great memories of me watching Are you Afraid of the Dark. I even surprised him last year with the full DVD set of the show. So just for old times sake, I have to pick AYAOTD...
Both shows are cheesy, but I still love them. Are you afraid of the dark is absolutely scarier but goosebumps is overall better Story-wise and because of the material they transferred from some of my favourite books. Also Goosebumps Villains are Top-notch whereas the majority of AYAOTD's Villains are rather lacklustre.
The scariest episode of are you afraid of the dark is the one with the swimming pool or the clown one or the doll house and the scariest episode of goosebumps is the Haunted Mask
If someone makes an own children’s horror comedy anthology series it would have framing set ups, original ideas of monsters, and scares from are you afraid of the dark, combined with goosebumps casts and popularity impacts what would they get?
Love the video Phoebe, but you drastically undersold the impact of Are You Afraid of the Dark due to one major factor: if Are You Afraid of the Dark hadn't been such a massive hit for Nickelodeon, showcasing the popularity potential for a young adult anthology horror series, there is no guarantee that FOX Kids greenlights Goosebumps.

I own both series on DVD an enjoy eating them all year an sharing my childhood with my nieces an nephews. Someone make a time machine so I can relive my youth!
Are you afraid of the dark intro was scary as hell
My brothers and I LOVED Are You Afraid Of The Dark, our parents set up the basement like a living room so on Saturday night one of us would be in the basement and call up to the other 2 to come down to watch. We would shut the lights off.
Finally a video about this!!! Let’s go!!
Goosebumps holds such good childhood memories of Autumn and October watching late night on the Disney channel
The Goosebump's books is where it was at!
I choose goosebumps it has one to the most iconic character slappy the dummy.
But the show never did the Dummy series justice. He was way more sinister in the books.
@@randomfools808,yup.He was a megalomaniac who wanted to enslave everyone and
If ur younger than 12,don't read
Wasn't pulling back to kill.He almost did in Slappy's Nightmare(Series 2000
Yessss! Are you afraid of the dark? Was my preferred choice as a child. A lot scarier than Goosebumps and I thought the stories were better.
Man i miss these times used to rush home from school and watch both faithfully, i couldn't get enough along with keenen and kel all that Rokos moderen life Ghost rider on pbs etc. aww man the 90's were awesome Golden era!!
Are You Afraid Of the Dark had some scares for sure! When the show came on, we always turned off the lights, since it was on at 9:30pm.
Goosebumps will always be undefeated to me! That intro was everything too. I still sing it sometimes 🙌🏽
Are you afraid of the dark was much memorable to me, I loved goosebumps but it lacked in alot of episodes, I felt like are you afraid of the dark had you sitting on the edge of your chair, and at the end when they put the fire out, it just made you think about the whole episode while you went to bed, it use to come on at like 8 at night and we had to go to bed at 9
I’ve been waiting for y’all to do another Vs video.
I remember being legitimately scared by the Goosebumps moments with:
1) The monstrous floating masks
2) The haunted dark ride that two kids rode through
(Forgot both episode names)
I love both goosebumps and and are you afraid of the dark these shows are my favorite of all time and what made me fall in love with horror and scary ghost stories for life.
The Slappy in the Book Cover looks scarier than in the Series and Movies
You're right
Are you afraid of the dark is getting its own movie, and I’m stoked for it!
The Midnight Madness episode of Are you Afraid of the Dark still holds up. Nosferatu is just downright terrifying. The Goosebumps books influenced my childhood more than the show did. Are you Afraid of the Dark is just so iconic in youth horror. I miss it.
So true. I was in 3rd grade when the midnight madness aired. Nosferatu gave me nightmares for weeks.
#1 the setup.
Are you kidding me? The Goosebumps theme song should have got that win.
I just knew in my heart that even goosebumps couldn't beat Are you Afraid of the Dark
I just started rewatching it. Hahahhahaa. Love are you afraid of the dark. Childhood nostalgia
Tales from the crypt is the best... WAhahahaha yeah!
That's what I was thinking.
Yeah man yeah
Yeah I love both Tales from the Crypt shows.
If we talking adults shows yes,but in the kid/teen realm? There's layers to that 90's horror
Thisw was the perfect nostalgia trip for my birthday weekend.
Are you afraid if the dark was so much better then goosebumps.
During these hard times I am literally binge watching every 90s horror anthology series... EVERY Night!!
Are You Afraid of the Dark hands down! This was my Saturday as kid. Plus I can not wait until the Are You Afraid of the Dark reboot!!!!
Watched and loved both but prefer Are You Afraid Of The Dark
Same here.
Just... thank you so much for this video. 🙏🙏
Are you afraid of the dark?!! Every day!! My all time favorite show! Goosebumps wasn't as scary
I agree Goosebumps was less scary but more popular than Are You Afraid Of The Dark
Are You Afraid Of The Dark was the best! I was born in 91 & growing up I had no clue shows could be scary like that.
Phoebe be looking so beautiful. I am still waiting on the trailer for The live-action Are You Afraid of the Dark movie.
I thought they both were great, but Goosebumps left my childhood scarred with the gnome episode lol.
Thank you!!! I just commented about the gnome episode, not remembering which show. Gnomes are assholes. LMAO
Goosebumps was my childhood
Same
The scariest episode of are you afraid of the dark is the one with the swimming pool or the clown one or the doll house and the scariest episode of goosebumps is the Haunted Mask
Yeah
Lamari Piazza glad you agree
Goosebumps is definitely still relevant. My 4th graders still love reading the books today!
Not surprised that they didn’t mention how bad the goosebumps movies were.
Courage the cowerdly dog scared me as a child
If someone makes an own children’s horror comedy anthology series it would have framing set ups, original ideas of monsters, and scares from are you afraid of the dark, combined with goosebumps casts and popularity impacts what would they get?
To tell you the truth, I love both. ❤
I like you
Gail Neubauer There is nothing wrong with loving both! I love both as well😉💚🖤
Submitted for the approval of the midnight society . I love that phrase
Yo the goosebumps books are gold and my childhood and the reason i learned to read 😂😂
That is just too sweet. Lovely comment.
Same.And some comics
Not dr Seuss? Goosebumps? That's what made u learn to read? Lol
