I'll never forget the day while riding on the bus in Hawaii the driver told me that as a kid during the attack on pearl harbor he got up on the roof of his house and watched the whole thing. He remembered it like it was yesterday.

This is my Hawaii during the war years from age 9 till 13. I only know the area in my neck of the woods, which is anything west of where the railroad tracks passed the Oahu Prison ball park. Stan Musial hit a home run over centerfield and landed in my elementary schoolyard. Moanalua Gardens was a paradise on earth and many times larger than it is today.

Thank you so much to the family who was/is responsible for putting this glimpse into time gone by onto youtube for us to watch. The memories are priceless!!! My parents both served in WW2, but in different parts of the world. Thank you again.

Beautiful colours of Duco on the cars, looking brand new, shining in the Pacific sunlight. Just love the 3 guys at the end, puffing away on their ciggies in front of the (reversed) "No Smoking" sign. Glad you have access to these home movie gems and release them for us all to enjoy.

Near the beginning of this film I can recognize the interior and exterior of Honolulu Hale. Later on I recognize Oahu cemetery and the walls and gate of the Royal Moseleum.

What an incredible piece of film you have here!! I'm actually going to Hawaii at the end of May and just getting a glimpse of this beautiful state/looking at this and making me feel like I'm back in time during the 1940s is just unreal.. such an amazing video quality from back then! Thank you for this. So much joy bringing me during the wartimes.

Great film, very nice to see this famous part of the world looking so calm and modern for its time, at such a momentus point in history. Thanks for making this available for all to see.
It looked at first that all the cars were driving on the left, but it appears that the whole film is mirrored from left to right, perhaps worth pointing that out.

I really enjoyed watching the home movie. I didn't realize that you could film home movies in color back then. I do remember seeing 1940 era television shows and movies in color that said ""in Technicolor." Very interesting indeed.

Kodachrome and its predecessor Kodacolor were available in the mid and late 1930s.

How come the video is inverted? A lot looked familiar, but different, because it was inverted.

Very nice old film, but I would have to say it's a little bit latter than 1940 maybe early to mid 1942 the truck with the three men in front of it at 13:54 is a 1941 Chevy and is all painted in wartime OD it even has the black out covers on the headlights!

The movie earlier in the clip according to the marquee is "My Love Came Back" starring Olivia de Havilland, Jeffrey Lynn, Eddie Albert, and Jane Wyman. Opened July 13, 1940. I guess it could be '42 by the time it made it to Hawaii theaters? Or maybe these assorted clips are not all from the same reel?

Great film. But note that all the images is in reverse.

Only the last portion of this film is reversed. As usual, anyone who had a movie camera with color film shot views of flowers and trees, but it would've been a lot more interesting to exclusively film streets and buildings and people instead, for us in the future.
There are a lot of recognizable scenes here, but there are also a bunch of obscure locations which are unidentifiable today. I suspect that there are shots of the lawn and grounds of my great-grandfather's house in Nuuanu.
