When I was 30 years old, 100 plants did not seem too over-whelming (but I only had 3 children at that time also). I went on and had 7 children, home schooled all of them until high school...moved a few times; needless to say, my collection got smaller and smaller. Now, kids are grown, I'm living with my oldest daughter and son-in-law (she understands my obsession with plants/ he on the other hand...never mind). But at 67 years old, retired and partially disabled, my 35 plants are MORE than enough to keep me ALWAYS "busy". Many of these will out live me, and then my kiddos can squabble over who gets what. LOL 🤣😂😅

The last 12 months i spiralled into full blown hoya madness, from 40 to 250+. It has become my life (outside of work at least - i need to work to make the money to keep buying hoyas). My main concern now is that I'll never be able to go on a holiday ever again because i can't leave my hoyas 😂 I am hopeful that once my collection is more established, the plants will be larger and hardier and perhaps they wont notice if I'm away for a week or two...

What a great video! Having retired last fall, this plant collection - I started 3 years ago - was exactly what I needed for this phase of my life. And 300 plants aren't too many now, because I can leisurely pace all my chores and spend a significant amount of time just enjoying the beauty.
It did get a little tiring spending every weekend watering and maintaining them when I worked full time - so retiring was the answer to that lol. Less money for plants, but that's why I bought at a frenzied pace pre-retirement 😮. At least that's one of my excuses...
I think the positive nature of the plant community - upbeat people (who have enough hope to grow a stick!) - has increased the enjoyment. I've met some great people who are more than 'plant friends.'

Having over 100 plants it can be quite a challenge especially regarding pest management. (I don't let any of my plants touch each other any more). It is an expensive hobby just with the pots and substrate thank you for addressing that. It is a wonderful hobby one of the biggest perks for me is during the gloomy dark winters in Minnesota USA the addition of grow lights in the house really lengthens the day and brightens everything which makes the winters more tolerable , plus green growing plants and Hoya blooms is always such a pleasure.

I live in Scotland, and you're right. Winters here are VERY dark, and I do really enjoy my plants most during those times! Oddly enough, the plants seem to do very well despite the lack of light (EXCEPT for succulents, which I've been gradually getting rid of ...I don't do cactus at all! I can't be arsed messing around with gro-lights. I just get plants that don't mind the seasonal changes.)

  • @SparkleInMoonlight

Finally someone said it! :-D So realistic - as if I heard myself :-D When I see beautiful photos of indoor jungle I also see: omg, so many pests opportunities of them climbing here and there, so much maintanance (showering, watering, repotting etc.) :-D
My main plant goal is now: get everyone growing in self-watering pot and figure out a way how to deal with pest en masse without the use of pesticides, which are both harmful to the environment and esp. to my own health (physical and mental), which seriously worries me.
Also I can´t afford to keep buying new cover pots - my plants outgrow them quite fast. So I started a new hobby to (hopefully) cut the costs down: I´m learning how to make ceramics.
    P.S.: I like your editing of the video - it´s fun 🙂

Ooooh how i understand! Yes, plants are amazing, having plants in your home is great. They are fun to watch, it's rewarding to see them grow and evolve and bloom and all. During 2020, as i was living in a tiny appartment and being sheltered, it was wonderful to enjoy nature in my home. However, it is also really challenging and time consuming and sometimes, things go extremely wrong and it is, at the end of the day, a big loss. I had to be away from my home for almost 3 month during 2020, and when i came back.... half of my collection was dead and crispy, the other half was a pest fest. I threw almost everything away, the variegated stuff, and the rare stuff, and the expensive stuff... actually, now 3 years later, i have found a new appreciation for fewer, cheaper, common plants. They make me happy, don't ask for a lot, can tolerate a lot and overall, is more of an easy commitment. (Also, pests don't love them, they must not be delicate enough or rare enough in their little pest eyes)

Now about plants, I have come to a point where I’ve just decided that I will enjoy them while I have them. I came to the realization that it’s not a waste of money and I won’t feel guilty if I fail, because I learned something.
One thing I wish I knew when I started, plants just die sometimes. Period. It would’ve saved me some anguish and some garbage I took from others judging my plant caring abilities. I’m not a serial plant killer, I’m learning. 😂

It is an everyday chore. I enjoy tending them but it is definitely exhausting sometimes.
I have a couple hundred Hoya in an atrium in my house. Everyone loves seeing them but need to visit the day where my whole house is upside down because I'm sanitizing and cleaning the atrium.
Many of my mother plants are out under my trees, they are not care free. Yes natural predators help me out there but they need attention too. And then my porch is packed. If I did not live in Florida I can't imagine what it would take.
A lot of money on pure crop and the supplies as you said. $50 bags of perlite, bark, nutricote, etc etc
But it is something I love doing. There is a lot of joy. It's the only slow thing I do. They make me take notice of creation. Yes, as you said therapeutic.
Lastly we all lose plants, we all get frustrated, we all make mistakes, we all deal with pest. It's part of the hobby.

    • @BasiePlants
      @BasiePlants  Год назад +2

Haha, the whole house being upside down because of plant chores is something I relate to a lot; when I have to empty out my tents to clean them and it is the middle of the winter, there are not many nice things I have to say, especially since it must be done in a day, because plants cannot be all over the room that is also bedroom + office + all my living space :D
I imagine living in Florida has both it's blessings and downsides; I immediately think of storms or heat waves as big downsides.
I forgot to factor in something a lot of us have who can't grow them out - lights :D Quite a cost there every month. But for me it is definitely worth it :) I love doing it, but I think people need to know all about the hobby, it's not just buying the plant and finding a space in the house where it fits decor the best.

Good subject, well handled. Especially the cost element, which might not actually occur to people. (And the storage area needed for all the paraphernalia as well.)
However, there are two issues I think are also important:
    1) If you go on holiday, do you have somebody who will take care of all your plants? I have about 40 plants, and as my husband and I don't go on holiday together any more (due to job requirements) he offers to take care of the plants for me when I'm away. He has a tendency to over-water, though ...so I have to put signs on ALL the plants to tell him what to do with each one. (Don't water the succulents, water the ferns every day, etc.) But if he wasn't here to do this, my plants would probably die if I was away for more than a week or two.
    2) Does the person you live with enjoy living in a jungle? I've encountered plant people who say 'tough' if their spouse doesn't like that kind of environment. To me that's not a good attitude. If your husband's hobby was collecting hubcaps, would you want every room in the house filled with them? Probably not. I think it's important to agree on boundaries, so YOUR hobby doesn't interfere with your roommate/spouses enjoyment of what is also their home.

Preach Miro! I got to plants when I was staying at home because of my health, it helped me to kill time and do something beside feeling miserable. I got pretty amount of them. But then I got back to work, full time, so now when I come back home I am pretty exhausted and I don’t have same amount of time to care for them. At first I felt guilty about giving away some of my plants or throwing them in a trash if they were shit looking like some of my calathes. But now I know that I should think about myself first and it is not bad to downsize a collection if I need to. Also, sometimes it comes to situation when you are starting loving some plants more than the others, no need to keep these less favourite, someone might love them more. Now I focus more about my hoyas so I am giving away most of my aroids, because I don’t vibe with them that much. Less plants means more time I can spend to care for each and every one of those that I like, clean them, check for pest, and enjoy them. I am trying to be more mindful now when it comes to buying plants. I was standing in the shop the other day, in the plant section and my husband said "there are no hoyas in here, move on" and he was damn right 😄

I am glad that it worked out for you! I think it is perfectly fine to downsize. I definitely grew a crazy amount of plants through these past 7 years since I have restarted my collection after UNI. Orchids, violets, calatheas, philodendrons, peperomia, echeverias + other succulents and now hoyas. There are many plants that I love, many I would love to grow. I could probably fill out a very decently sized greenhouse and arrange it so it looks very nice :D But taking care of all of that, with limited resources - time, money, limited acccess to pest managment? Abslutely not something I can do. Even now, when most of my plants are hoyas, there are many I can go without. The reason I don't is because sometimes it is more work to get rid of a plant than to just leave it be. So, we will see :) I am sure with time I will cut down evern more :) I think goal for me would be to actually be more rutheless, maybe bloom all that I have (and we are not that far away from that), document all of them well, and then decide which are favorites and in what capacity they can stay and then give away the rest and make room for new sp that I have not grown and bloomed yet :) And of course, present them all on the channel :D

@@BasiePlants Yeah, I totally get what you mean. I would love to have greenhouse of my own, who wouldn’t? But to be honest, it would be a lot of work, maybe if we were rich enough to employ people to help us then it would be manageable 😄 I would love to grow many more plants than I have room for, not only hoyas, but for now I love them the most. I understand that you will eventually get rid of some hoyas because I know that we shouldn’t have favourites but we do, there are too many of them and some are much more interesting than the others. I am pretty sure that it will come to situation that some of them will disappoint me, I will try my best to figure out how to care for them but if it doesn’t work I will say bye. There is no need and place for drama in my jungle, I want to grow plants that get in sync with me and my lifestyle. That’s why I think plant collecting/growing is a journey and things will change and evolve and that’s perfectly fine to me 🙂 I mean to some degree, we will not start growing calatheas again I hope? 🤣

We live in Alberta Canada, it gets very cold here in the winters. I have had plant collections a couple of times, then we moved and I couldn't take all the pots etc. with me. I kept 7 plants that hung in there, after going through crazy moves. Now I want to concentrate on Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter Cactus. Also my Indian Rope Hoya's Or Hoya Compacta? I have two of the rope hoya's, Also a crown of Thorn cactus, an Aloe Vera, one snake plant, the lighter coloured one, and I had one Thanksgiving cactus plant, and my Jade plant. Then a store in our town, ordered to many thanksgiving cactus, 2 yrs ago, and after Christmas, they gave them away. So I took one home. Now I have about 7 Thanksgiving and Easter cactus. I had to really cut my Jade plant back, as it was flopping over, way too heavy on the top. Poor thing looks like somebody butchered it. But I have the shape I want now, also lots of cuttings I am trying to propagate, and the main plant is starting to put out new growth, which is exciting. I tried just the leaves too, but they didn't do well and got thrown out. I hope the cuttings live, am also trying to propagate the Thanksgiving cactus as well. Some look good, some not so much. But now comes the part we all talk about, is the cost of things. I desperately want one of those cabinets from Ikea, also lights, fans, new plant pots to try out. Plus various fertilizers etc. But being a pensioner, the money doesn't come easy. We also have 4 pet sheep two pet goats, lots of chickens, for eggs, and 2 big outside guard dogs, for the sheep and goats, plus 3 inside dogs. 2 small ones and one medium sized one. I also love experimenting with vegetables etc. out in the garden. So still lot's of interests, but I have found that you do make friends through having house plants, animals, chickens and dogs. We used to raise, breed and show miniature horses for 25 yrs, but finally found it too expensive and too much work. I still miss the horses. But I think even just owning one for a pet, is not in the cards anymore. I also Love to read, and have so many books. But only books I can read over and over, the ones I don't enjoy reading more than once have to go. I love crystals too, they are so interesting. Now though I just want to have fun with my plants. I understand when you see people's huge plant collections, that you feel it's too much work. I don't see beauty, I see a big mess, and hard to keep your house clean. I enjoy watching your show, you give out so much information on plants etc. Please keep it up.

I started with Hoya bella, and got good at looking after it before I tried Hoya davidcummingi, After some years I bought Hoya sunrise. They have everything to make me happy. I also grow many cacti because they do so well outdoors in my environment. I even tried orchids. My first
orchid was a Cattleya. I learnt how to care of it for 3 years, then started buying some more, but only a few. I grow other orchids too and if they don't do well they aren't for my climate. It's an addiction to buy more and more plants, I know because I do it every month😰🙏But I'm trying my best to make the hobby manageable and enjoyable. Lol I'm thinking of repotting all of them in something different! But plants, whether in the garden or in the house are proven uplifting if we don't go too far! Lol I have like 5 or 6 gardens here on the farm! Food, flowers, medicinal herbs, so now I have a garden inside too! Lol And if you ever come back to US and pass through Kansas you have a couch to sleep on and we will feed you too! I actually love that you are sharing more about who you are! I loved the cake baking birthday celebration! I think you would make a lovely friend! As a past singer as well we could sing in the gardens and eat cake! By the way my youngest son used to do that feet behind the head thing as well! Lol You are a great, kind, extremely smart and talented person. That is my impression! And funny! And most of the plastic pots i pick up are at thrift stores and not in my prefered colors so I give them a spry job.

agree as someone who collects hoyas. Know your limit. Only collect as much as you can care of. What also keeps me motivated is that if I dont have the energy to care for them is the thought that I spend either my time or hard earned money on them so I will not let them die and just do it. If you really feel like you cant do it sell them before its to late or save them by cutting and restarting. I once had a time where I was really busy and I knew I wouldnt be able to care for them so I sold many and at least earned some money. Better than having dead plants and a bad feeling about it. Lastly I love my hobby but it still shouldnt fill 100 % of your life time. It can burn you out like everything else you do non stop

hahahaha :D And then that popped up xD Well, I do sometimes like to think my plants 'take me' to those places where they are from :) It's a bit of a daydream, but if you ask me, I have been to SE Asia many times :D

I had about 15 when things shut down, then I suddenly had over 200 and starting feeling crowded so I started getting rid of them.

You're so funny, #Brave. Not all superheroes wear capes! Don't lose those tights, though! I laughed so loud when you said, "Lechuza pots, old money!" So true! Then finally, "Balls and whistles, bows and whistles." Pricless! The saying is, Bells and Whistles. That alone got a thumbs up from me. I followed you down the rabbit hole. Great video!

:D I am glad you got a good laugh. But honesty, who is affording those pots? I know whoooo isn't 😅

the pests can be managed with the help of predatory mites however this comes back to being extremely costly in case of outbreaks. the worst months i have to just pay about 150 dollars on the predatory mites for both the spidermites and thrips. very little effort, successful treatment but yeah, very costly.

Thank you Miro😊🪴 I think with me it’s finding the right plant for me and for my house! And that’s why I have so many 😂 and of course it is a form of an addiction. But some plant’s do so well in different environments and we don’t know until we buy them! Thanks again for a great video Plant Friend 🤣🤣

I also think it is important to find the right plant for you. There are many plants I love, but I know I simply cannot have them. And that is okay. If they don't want to grow here, I shan't force them. There are MANY that will be more than grateful. It is a form of addiction, of course, but I don't think it's negative. Yes, it can get out of hand and then it is *slightly* more troubling, but unlike other condtions, I'd say consequences here are far less severe (in most cases). And OMG HOW DARE YOU PLANT FRIEND I JUST GOT TO THAT PART 😠😂😂

Enjoyed this video very much. I struggle with getting rid of plants I’m not loving or is not loving me back. I have a Calathea Network that I swear hates me. BTW….your hair looks so healthy….I’d kill for that hair!

Maybe, you could make a video about how to slow down plant growth in general and how to let plants grow more compact.
I am currently experimenting with IBA, because it is widely available as CloneX, applied at the growth tip, and can say, that this is a way to stop a runner from growing, but it can have negative effects and I have not yet tested if it is reversible.
I know that there are other phytohormones better suited for this task, but I started with what I had right there.

This was a good one. Yeah my 30 something plants are good enough for now. Good points for sure. But hey! I have one calathea, and a few cacti lol. They make me happy most of the time 😅.

Wait, which are bad ones?! 😂 1 calathea = 10 hoyas in terms of difficulty. Cactus... well, we all make mistakes. I have some as well.
