Rob James-Collier said in an interview that it's the giant, looming secret of his homosexuality that always makes Thomas so defensive and bitter, which is perfectly understandable considering that he would be arrested or killed if his secret got out
@samantha smith yes Thomas’s sexuality was known by most staff and some staff like Miss Baxter, Anna, Mrs Hughes were kind, non judgmental and accepting of Thomas’s sexuality. Other staff like Mr Molesley or Daisy were indifferent and didn’t use his sexuality against him or seem to judge him over it. However he was marginalized, insulted and unfairly treated by some of the staff because of his sexuality. Andy initially had a good friendship with Thomas but shunned him when he learnt of his sexuality. Alfred reported him to the police and only backed down when lord grantham spoke up for Thomas. James not only tried to get Thomas sacked but forced Carson to not give Thomas a reference so he could find future employment by threatening to go public and cause scandal for Downton and the Crawley family. Carson was cruel, rude and very homophobic when he called Thomas “vile, “foul” and said he “deserved to be horse whipped” When Thomas was privately helping Andy to learn to read and was giving lessons in his room so the other staff didn’t find out Andy couldn’t read both Carson and Mrs Patmore automatically assumed Thomas was had romantic/sexual motives for Andy and Carson interrogated Thomas and assumed the worst.
I think most people knew, not just the staff. Mary and Robert obviously knew, Cora and Sybil probably did too but I'm not sure about Edith... but not just them, Mr.Pamuk immediately noticed so did Richard (and we're glad he did because they were too goddamn adorable) and Guy and also (I don't know if they said his name) the man who took him in the gay bar
O'Brien's venomous ways certainly weren't a good influence on Thomas either. After they fell out and O'Brien's character departed DA, Thomas's character seems to develop in a more positive, albeit still complex direction.
Thomas is such an incredible character. He's gone through so much development throughout the series. He's a good person, at his core. His goodness has been beaten down and covered up by a lifetime's worth of loneliness and loss, but it's there. I'm glad he's been able to show that more often recently. It's great that he has a good, true friend again. Thomas really needs more friends in his life. I think that if someone showed him consistent kindness, loyalty, and acceptance, he could really shine. It's so tragic that he was essentially willing to poison himself in order to stop being who he was. Hopefully now that he's accepted his sexuality a bit more, he'll be able to find contentment, even in a dark time. I just hope he's happy, in the end.
I completely agree. In a weird way, he's one of my favorite gay characters on television. All too often, writers want to make gay characters one dimensional; flamboyant or sassy or slutty or [insert stereotype here]. In my opinion, Thomas' character realistically shows the consequences of what society can do when you shun, demonize, marginalize people just for who they are, how they were born: it can turn even the best of us into spiteful, vengeful, and selfish creatures who just want acceptance and love. Ugh, i love it! They could make an entire show about him.
Baxter is such a gem of a character! From her growing affection for Molesly, to her what becomes a friendship with Barrow, and her devotion to Cora for looking past her history, she, like Anna, anchors much of the household.
Everyone I know think Baxter wasn't a necessary addition to the show. She was one of the greatest in my opinion. She was always honest. I hope she has a good role in the movie!!!
The fact that they think that she wasn’t necessary is so stupid because if she wasn’t in the show Thomas barrow would’ve succeeded in killing him self. She is the only person who knew him intimately only because they grew up together she was the only one who could figure out why he was acting a certain way and pick up the signs that he was trying to commit suicide. no one else would have been able to pick that up so yes I think she’s very necessary.
I'm on your team, love Baxter. A fierce lady like Mary, Mrs. Hughes, and the Dowager is never wrong in my book, but portrayals like Cora and Baxter who are soft AND strong shows that you can be a Strong Female Character™ in more than one way, which is something sorely needed. Same with male characters - soft masculinity is criminally underrepresented.
Poor Thomas - in his line of work (and the era), it's nearly impossible for him to have a lasting, healthy relationship. And doing this to himself in order to be "cured" is heartbreaking. All he needs is true love, and friendship.
Plus to think that there are still places, that promise to cure a person who is not heterosexual!! What horrors they have had to endure and some still do get treated like scum!!
@@rohaankhan7523 I think Barrow is referring to how he told the police that Baxter had testimony about Mr. Green's murder. Because Baxter wasn't telling Barrow the full truth about how Anna and Bates may have been involved, which Baxter overheard. Baxter was forced to testify to the police, but she only said vague stuff because she didn't know everything about the situation. Thomas feels guilty because he shouldn't have forced the issue or put Baxter, Bates and Anna into trouble.
Oh my dear Lord, what an awful mess he was in from that worthless piece of junk brace!! Even though I knew it wasn’t real, seeing the horrendous results from that brace made me wince!!
He was a jerk, but that was the point; he was struggling with his identify and status. When he found someone, he loved, he showed that love back. Sybill, The kids (especially Mr. George), O'Brien for a while, Cora, Jimmy, and Baxter. He respected Mr. Bates as well at the end. It was a great character and a masterful performance.
I couldn’t help but detest O’Brien after what she did to a pregnant Cora. She was so spiteful, mean, derogatory, conniving......so totally an unpleasant person (the actress did such a great portrayal, that the site of her made me ill)‼️
I am just verklempt reading all your "Team Baxter" posts... I love her so much - she's so kind to all, and it's that love she puts out into the universe that comes back to her.
Poor Thomas, all the physical pain he put himself through. Because those scammers gave him and who knows how many more guys false hope that they could be "cured".😡😡🤬🤬🤬
@sarah jones He travelled to London (I think it was) to have a treatment he saw in a magazine. This was to turn him straight. When he finished it, the syringe and "medication" they gave him which turned out just to be saline, was meant to continue the treatment to stop him being gay. It was all a con of course.
Thomas is gay & is desperate to try to change that, so he’s taking experimental injections , which of course don’t work and it’s just making him sicker .
The police was trying to find out who murdered Green. He told them Baxter ( technically à criminal on probation ) might have heard some things . So she was interrogated ( she was not in Downton yet so she wouldn t have been arrested but she was obviously scared )
This guy was an asshole and they made him a Butler in the finale....WTF! The actor was great because I really hated him in the series.....we were suppose to hate him....right? Hahaha!
WHAT I DONT GET IS THE FACT THAT THOMAS BECAME HOUSE BUTLER IN TIMES WHERE IM SURE IT WAS ILLEGAL TO EVEN BE GAY AND THEY ALL KNEW HE WAS GAY. THE CREATOR OF THE SHOW MADE IT A POINT THAT THEY "GOT EVERYTHING JUST RIGHT" WITH THE TIMES BUT THAT WHOLE PART DIDNT MAKE SENSE. THEY DIDNT WANNA BE SEEN EATING WITH A WOMAN WITH CHILD AND NO HUSBAND BUT A HOMOSEXUAL BUTLER MADE SENSE. YOU ALL KNOW BACK THEN THAT FOLKS THOUGHT GAYS WERE ALL KINDS OF UNNATURAL BEINGS.
It was illegal, but that didn’t mean everyone was inclined to call to police on a man who was discreet about it. Thomas’s sexuality is definitely an open secret, but it’s likely that it came to be known after he was hired, and since he was discreet about it, they were probably inclined just to keep him on because drawing attention to it would have been more of an embarrassment to the family. And indeed, contrary to what most people believe, it wasn’t uncommon for people to have a “live and let live” attitude towards homosexuality because it was so rarely obvious. On the other hand, an unmarried woman with a child was a highly visible embarrassment.
Thomas being fired and arrested for being gay was brought up in the show and it was stated that him being gay wasn’t illegal, it was illegal for him to act upon it, which he stated he had not done (even though he had, he and other people lied about it so he would go to jail for it) so him working there while keeping it discreet/ it not being brought up was seen as fine in this particular household
Andre Suston That's true but the whole point of the Downton Abbey household was they were kind, forgiving and futuristic people who wanted the world to change for the better, they weren't suppose to marry Americans, but Howard did, women weren't supposed to be powerful or independent but all his daughters were incredible woman with jobs, goals and very open minded, when howard finds out Thomas is gay, he shrugs it off, because he states that it's no fault of his own and that as long as it's not hurting anyone, why fuss? He sees his servants as people and that's what makes the series awesome, it's having the balls to go against the grain when everyone else is stuck in the past, I think even one of the first epsiodes was about them gladly excepting electricity while in fact it's the servants that struggle with change the most throughout the show.
Love Baxter. She was so kind to Thomas even after he was trying to control and intimidate her.
