I believe you should not put any lateral strain on the chain, as it can result in a loosening of the links. It is best to support it while pulling it straight out. Think of the link that is closest to the support as the chain is dangling in mid-air, that link is being strained by the entire weight of the chain.

Oh yes I have a number of artifacts I use from pieces of old binoculars, plumbing nuts etc. I must get around to buying a watch vice. Well spotted.
