This works so much better as the story of a closeted girl being afraid people will realize she's gay if she spends the night with her girlfriend.

@@Ghostrama13 The original isn’t meant to sound suspicious at all. Both singers want to spend the night together, but social customs demand that the woman be chaste and return to her family. The whole song is about both coming up with lame excuses for why the other should stay or go, with the man trying to convince her to disregard social expectations without explicitly saying as much and the woman trying to convince herself more than anyone to just leave already because staying with her boyfriend might damage her reputation. Those social expectations haven’t really gone away, but an LGBT context is a good modernization of its original message.
@@Ghostrama13 the original intent was essentially, women wants to keep her relationship with a man relatively secret and doesn't want there to be too much gossip if she spends the night. Over time, due to cultural drift, it has taken on the more creepy meaning to the point where I find it genuinely cringe worthy to listen to, but that was not the original intent. This adaption is much better in my opinion
At the same time she resents her orientation but eventually comes to terms that it’s who she is.

I know people freaked over this song last year but I've always liked it, way considering that it was written and performed by a very sweet, very in love married couple.
That said, one line in particular always bugged the hell outta me: "Say, what's in this drink?" God, that always sat badly with me. Love how you changes some stuff around (this rendition was heart melting) but the fact that you changed that line in particular, *chef's kiss*

“say whats in this drink” is basically her blaming it on the alcohol because it wasn’t socially acceptable for her to be there with him
try and remember the time period it was written in!!
The time period it was written in is kinda the problem. In that time a woman was not supposed to be in any way sexual and so was expected to turn down any kind of advance with that kind of connotation to it even if she was into it. Hence her needing a long list of excuses to stay the night even though she wanted to.
The problem is, in an atmosphere where women aren't allowed to say yes, there's no way for them to say no.
The exchange that happens in the original version of the would be the same whether the girl was into it or. If she's into it she's supposed to say no till given no other option. If she's not into she's actually say no and having all of her options to escape taken away.
That's more why the song is disturbing. Because based on the time it was written in, both the romantic and rapey interpretations of it are equally accurate.
"say whats in this drink" was actually a pretty common joke at the time the song was written. The joke being that there was nothing in the drink. She's intentionally creating a scapegoat because she wants to spend the night but contemporary opinions would tell her that it's immoral for an unmarried man and woman to sleep under the same roof together. But /this/ way she can blame the drink, like it's not really her fault.
I’ve heard that the “what’s in this drink” line was actually a common joke at the time. In the original she’s accusing him of being cheap and not putting any alcohol in it!
I still think I prefer “was that a wink”, though.

@@probably_noah9417 it's actually not. to our modern ears, it seems really creepy, but iirc the actual context of the time with a lot of the phrases used indicates she is a woman who really wants to have sex and bc of the time will be shunned for wanting it, so it's like she's trying to "give herself an out" of claiming she made excuses.
Same I actually like the song in general but a couple parts were cringe because of the time period it was written in. Love the changes.

At the time it was made, women didn’t want to be seen as “loose” or “easy”, so the woman in the song is making excuses and blaming her lust on nonexistent factors to hide the fact that she does indeed *want* to stay with the man. There was nothing in the drink.

I don't normally like this song, but your cover is glorious! The straight version always struck me as creepy ("what's in this drink?") and manipulative (one says, "the answer is no," but the other keeps pushing)--I think this version sounds more like both are trying to get out of parting...? I figure it's gotta be more consensual when you have Victoria on one end and a flirty bard on the other. Amazing vocals, both of you!

In defense of the drink line it's referring to her knowing the guy put alchohol in the drink and then saying "oh I couldn't drive home" as a excuse to stay and sleep with him and was a common joke at the time it was written but without the knowledge of that context its super creepy

I love this song! All the controversy is dumb, and I just love the way your voice meshes so well with Cami’s. This song is such a teasing dialogue between two people who are hella attracted to each other and trying to make excuses to let them be together. It’s cute as heck.
Dumb? The context of the original is a man getting a girl drunk so he can sleep with her even tho she’s saying no. What’s dumb is anyone defending it. This version tho is much better cause she got rid of all the bad lyrics. This version is hella cute but the original couldn’t be any less cute. If u actually listen to the lyrics of the original u would know how bad it actually is.
The original is the man is attracted to her but she wants to go and doesn’t want to drink but he wants to sleep with her (that’s the only thing he wants) and is trying to pressure her into drinking in hope of getting her in bed. So your 2 people hella attracted to each other doesn’t work in the original (again if u actually listen to the lyrics of the original u would see this). This one tho it does.

Ooooor if you look at the times, have you ever considered the playful nature of the girl’s responses? If she really wanted to go, she would’ve left. She’s trying to find every excuse to leave, but she doesn’t want to leave. But she should, because of what will be implied. It’s entirely an accurate interpretation of the original to say that it’s not about a guy forcing himself on a girl, but about a girl who does really want to stay but is trying to be proper. Heck, Cami sang the original several years ago with no worries.
I like this version, it’s very cute. And it works remarkably well with these two lovely singers. But that doesn’t mean the original is any worse. Have a good day.

This version is cute cause she got rid of the problem lyrics and the original is not cause of said problem lyrics. And I doubt that Cami didn’t get comments about the lyrics when she sang it (unless she disabled the comments cause of how bad I’m sure they r which is understandable).
