I grew up in South Shields, which was supposed to have one of the only two grand union intersections in the World, the other being in Melbourne. But I never saw it - by the time I was born, it had been replaced by a roundabout. Still loved watching those trolleybuses, though.
Lots of great information in your blog! I’ve admired this layout for years. I’m hoping to be able to scratch build some streetcars in 1/29 scale, and to power them with NWSL gearboxes and can motors assembled into a power truck.
Excellent modeling and delightful video presentation. This all looks so realistic that I hate my n-scale layout now. ;-) Good luck with the completion.
This video is magnificent! I love the way the trolley cars "clatter" around the HO trolley layout; to me it's mesmerizing. And web of trolley wire above the layout just blows me way. I know it's wrong to envy other people - but I do indeed envy the talented people who put this all together. I, somehow, have to find out where I can attain the knowledge and skill to build an HO trolley layout like this. I live too far from model railroad clubs - and how-to books alone won't get me very far. I'm going to keep on searching for a way to get started in this wonderful hobby "Traction" model railroading is the rage!!!
+Gram Nylen. Thanks for that info, but with 2,785.9 miles between Baldwin Hills and where I live, I regret I won't be able to make the trip. In fact, I don't think I'll be visiting SCTC for a good long while. I'll just have to be content with being an e-member when I join up.
I cannot imagine the time you must have put in on the overhead wire alone. Absolutely spectacular layout!

Fascinating video! Great music background creates the impression that the streetcars are performing a dance. Thanks!

The late William 'Bill' Clouser would have loved this... as would my husbands late father, also an overhead electric modeler.
I enjoyed this video very much, 100% awesome engineering there on a model level, a true marvel.
Outstanding work!
Beautifully working overhead! That must have been a headache to install, but the result is rewarding. Thaks for sharing.
OMG! amazing! I wouldn't even know where to start if trying to build this! Very nice!
That overhead wire is like a cobweb of art amazing job again
Building a fully functional overhead wire for cars equipped with working trolley poles is very difficult. Congratulations !
Congratulations, you have nailed it, and the overhead looks very prototypical in action, well done.
Wow. What a build! Thanks, Paul
Nice work
Nothing short of amazing!
Great modeling and great music
That is a lot of work. Well done!!
Wow ! Very Nicely Done ! Bet you had fun with the overhead wire, look forward to more videos !

Wow that is a great setup. Much more than what I have in mind, but this gives inspiration to expand.
Wonderful ,,, i'm building a traction layout too ,,, got a lot to do ,, after seeing yours,,,,
Awesome work
Great job!
It's beyond amazing! It makes me all squidgy watching the trams rumble around...

+Everett the PE TractionGuy you still should become an Emember of the Southern California traction club I am and it's the best thing I have ever done
+Gram Nylen. Thank you! I will seriously consider becoming an e-member of the SCTC.
+Everett the PE TractionGuy just to let you now the sctc's club house is in Baldwin hills

AWSOME job
I think this would be a great display in O scale, it would be 8x8’.
je trouve très bien very well
Великолепно
Am I correct in assuming that the track is all wired solid? I.e no 2-rail wiring, with gaps, powered frogs, etc.
You are correct. When the layout was regular DC powered the overhead was positive and the track was negative. But now it is DCC which is AC.
Near hit at 2:37.
Yeah, they can tap if they time it right. But nothing detrimental.
SCTC Module? I like to head to Perris when they are at OERM.
Private layout but an sctc member
Very nice! How do you do your overhead wire?
Thank you littleevan99! The whole construction process is detailed on my blog: dan-d-sparks.blogspot
How did you do the switchers and crossings of the overhead wires?
Read all about it at: Dan-D-Sparks.blogspot.com
What's the name if the song. Also amazing job!
Deep Henderson
Stunning!
Only one thing is mystery for me :) how do turnout pans work?
Here is the How-to that I used: www.trolleyville.com/tv/school/catenary_construction/index.shtml
Now try running six through the intersection at the same time.
That is the goal!
Terrific work!
