Wow.. This is awesome. I could see fabricating a light aluminum dolly to hold the wingtip up to make it a completely 1 man operation. Hand winch on the trailer with 3 pull out ramps for the wheels to go up on, and youre done.. Looks like aircraft ownership is starting to look somewhat realistic for the average joe, like me.
Nice bit of design work there - basically the same system used in Schleicher and DG gliders (not surprising considering what Dick Van Grunsven flies for fun) but with the improvement that you don't need a stand to hold the first wing up while putting the second wing in place. The RV-12 wings weigh about a third of what my glider wings weigh and it only takes me about ten minutes to assemble the ship by myself using an Udo one-man assembly dolly. The 12 should be even easier.
Great video! Vans, you should take an hour or so to remake this video for the modern RV-12 and a new camera (or iPhone) so that I don't have to use the advanced portions of my brain to fill in the data missing from the VHS quality recording!
Where are the flight controls? How do you control the ailerons and flaps? Is it fly by wire and there's a canon plug somewhere? What about position lights?
Very nice features; I am planning on building again in near future and would certainly like this when it comes to storage. Anyone have this type plane on floats. Always had high wing
The fuel tank is behind the seats. The only reason to do this is to transport the plane on a flatbed or a purpose made trailer if you are too cheap to rent a hangar.
Too cheap or not hangers aren't available. In another 10 years the airport (KRHV) won't be available either, thanks to the a****** county stupidvisers in bed with the real estate developers .
@@rustywells8756 my thoughts exactly. Hangar scarcity is killing GA. I want to buy and own a plane again but ain't too keen about an outside tie downs for something I love.
Been there, done that. Sucks doesn't it? You put all of the blood/sweat/tears into it and feel like it's yours and BAM, move away and dad keeps it. :( On the plus side you will find the tanks are usually full when you come home to visit.
I sure don't like the way the guy is pushing and twisting and forcing the spar to seat correctly in the carry through. Might just be me, but I don't like it. I would much prefer the wings be fixed and the fuel in the wings and not in the fuselage behind the passenger. Way Too many fires!!!

I just want to know if you can remove them inflight for conveinence?
same thought. Missing a lot of information but ill give them come credit, RUclips was a different place in 2007 lol
Great aircraft
Looks like both spars extend to the other side of the fuselage. One pin would go through both spars?
That was it ? Wow. What aboit the aileron controls?
Why not design it with hinges so the wings fold towards the fuselage? Or would hinges introduce weak points in the wings?
Would hinges increase insurance costs?

Or.... If in my case, you have 2 airplanes and you can fit them both in one hangar.

My airport is building 50 new hangars and it still won’t put a dent in the waitlists for hangars in my area
wouldn't it be cool just taxiing around without the wings? lol just imagine the looks on the ATC controllers face
I'm gonna build a Rv-12 for college. Im already building a RV-7 but my dad keps it when I leave.
Thanks ❤😂
LOOKS LIKE LIVERMORE CA

I have an ultralight and do this in my neighborhood
please do not try this in flight
