First night I had the STI I did the exact same but with Noico. I had such an awesome experience doing the same with my CTR I felt why not do it on the STI also. Such a smart mod. One thing that helped me a bunch is doing under the rear seat, I put the mat on everything under there.
I did same thing! I did full trunk up to the seats under that black plastic piece. Under back seats/ on top where brake light is and underside. All doors deadened with all new speakers and sub. Sounds amazing now paired with Idoing unit🤘🏼..took me 2 days🥲..man was I sore 😅
Ha, exact same! I need to do my trunk. I just replaced all my speakers with jbl’s and a sub under passenger seat. I sound deadened the doors and and the whole floor with 1.5 boxes of kilmat this weekend. Idoing headunit as well! Legs and lower back man…
I am running a similar exhaust setup, Delta Motorworks Downpipe and muffler deletes and Nameless Midpipe. I ran Dynamat in trunk, doors, under rear seats, and headliner area. That does quiet down the road noise, but not a loud exhaust. I added MLV under the trunk mat, between the trunk and rear seats, and I'll probably run it under the rear tray area. It did a little, but won't kill the exhaust noise. The Dynamat and MLV probably added about 50lbs. Muffler delete I think drops about 15-20... Headliner Dynamat made a big difference in road noise and rain. The roof is THIN, be careful.
Use a heat gun, warm it up a little bit as you roll or press it on. Helps make it easier, goes down better. Conforms to the curves, gets in places. What about the trunk lid? And a peice behind the license plate . If the sub really hits, needed usually
If you were to use the entirety of the deadener, along the entire trunk, you’d see a major difference. I had a straight piped s10 with a 4 cylinder and did the entire back wall and it worked so well that I used it on multiple other vehicles, but you’d have to use so much of it, covering the entire floor, maybe even 2 times
I’ve been wondering about doing sound deadening for awhile in my STi. With some recent upgrades there’s definitely more noticeable NVH so now I’m very motivated to get into this. Great video! Thanks for all the detail and insight.
I did this exact thing to my 19 STI a few years back. I also got egg carton sound proofing foam and velcroed that to the rear seats (in the trunk) that helped too.
I've used the same kilmat on my bugeye.. did the doors thoroughly lol they're heavy now but no rattles! Stereo sounds great! I say the kilmat is really good quality. Esp for the price. Bang for the buck for sure. They have 2 thicknesses available too
I'm doing our shit box 2004 Kia Rio that our son threw away. It's got a good stereo but tin cans are noisy. It's a basic build with manual seat adjustment which makes it easy to pull everything out. Although the windows and mirrors are electric but that's a single cable. Really looking forwards to it. I've had a couple of BMW's ACS 540i and an S500L Mercedes. I know how quiet a car can be.
Nice. I have a standard Impreza 2014 model, I upgraded the head unit, then the door speakers, I’ve just added a 5 channel amp and sealed sub, the doors are sound deadened, but I wasn’t sure if I should do the boot/trunk. Maybe I should as it is a hatchback, so the back is open. I only have 1 12 inch 300 watts sub, so it isn’t rattling the car/panels, so I was thinking I might get minimal return
Just did this using Noico and man! The rear seems very quiet now during normal driving. It’s kinda weird because I’m use to hearing everything moving around. I also added it under that plastic trim behind the rear seats. 👍🏻 I plan to add it to the front now maybe under the seats and foot well.
Saw a lot of experts doing 100%. To me it wasn't logical. Covering 100% of a soda can with it seems to make no difference vs half coverage. I did about 60% to 75% on most of my surfaces.
I didi the same thing as you did + all doors. I also ripped off the stock sound damper that is at the spare tire indentation and replaced it with a better one. It had already almost came off so did not require any tools.
WOW, thanks, I was thinking to do that. I have 12 Hatchback and exhaust is rumbling, I feel like I need to also insulate my back door, I think sound resonates with in the door, thoughts?
Souind resonates anywhere it can go. If there are holes and places for sound to travel, it will go there. I would recommend doing the whole rear end on the hatch due to it being in the cabin of the car. It won't necessarily cut down on the exhaust sounds, but it'll definitely tone down the road noise and overall in cabin noise.
@@Autofreakgarage Awesome, thank you much, I will do that, I have been thinking about it for some time and now your video. SUBSCRIBED for more subi content, I just finished my 500WHP hatch build, check it out. Thank you for your video!
Thanks for the video! I'm considering the same. I have a grimmspeed catted downpipe and perrin resonated exhaust and I have a ton of drone at 70-80mph in 6th gear. With all of your exhaust setups, would you say that the ELH changes the drone RPM's? I might start there, then sound deadening, then a new catback so I don't spend money on parts I've already upgraded. Thoughts??
No it doesn't. I did the same thing to my trunk last year. The best thing to eliminate drone is to rock an exhaust that has mufflers. Once I swapped to the Invidia Q300, my STI has been way more enjoyable on the freeway.
No drone was resolved, as expected. It may have cut some of the noise down a bit, but nothing you’ll notice a drastic change on. You’ll notice less road noise and rattles moreso than exhaust noises.
Wonder if this will help with the random rattle from driver’s door people tell me is from the striker bar 🤔 and lol installs seldom go as smoothly as replacing a shift knob. Looking forward to update on your take how effective this is.
So you want a loud exhaust but don’t want to hear it in the cabin, kind of funny 🤣. So it seems the Touring Edition is spot on for your build philosophy. As for drone, articles say it is a pressure wave occurring when the sound frequencies of the engine and exhaust are the same, and they resonate with each other, “in harmony”. So mat in the trunk didn’t do much not that surprising actually. As for the stereo system the matting is supposedly perfect for reducing tinny secondary vibration. Doors seem the next logical next step modification. Interesting Kilmat says it’s product weighs 0.5 lbs/sq ft and a box covers 36 sq ft so 18 lbs for a box, yet you seem to think it weighs double that? Dynamat weighs the same as well but is three time the price of Kilmat! So as you said not as much of a dollar investment no doubt about that. AIso was interesting 🧐 to see 👀 the level of effort involved to install Kilmat thanks 🙏 for that. Not a mod for me and my Subie, as I’m into shedding weight not adding any frankly.
You're one of the few others that didn't cover 100% of everything. I feel as though only about 60% to 80% coverage is what does 99% of the deadening. But that's just my idea, zero proof of this. I did notice one of the more major differences for me, was pillars and the door frame around windows.
Hey have I noticed your trunk on the two sides is misaligned. My 2020 Sti the trunk on my side has a good figment and the other side has such a big panel gap
You can adjust on the hinges if yours is off. But my gap is even on both sides. I know in 2015, there was some issues with the corners of the trunk chipping since it was hitting the fender when opened. It has been resolved by Subaru since.
I got a box of 36 sq ft, Siless I think is the brand. 80 mil, 2 mm. One box weighed 20 lbs I believe. For my car, I needed around two boxes, smaller sedan, Saab 9-5 Aero. I'd say the added weight is negligible compared to the reduced noise. Up to each of us whether we want to trade a bit of performance for some luxury.
ive done this in all my cars. I did the doors on the STI but jesus christ himself couldnt quiet it down enough to my standards. 26 year old body with a 60 year old mindset...

@@SNIPEYOPIPE oh for sure, that was my bad I was just agreeing with you because its pretty complex doing a proper video in regards to the sub. But I did forget to mention that my decible comment was more towards your exhaust setup, so that was my bad.
