It can't be just that alone. I live in a blue state and while we have abortion rights we still have a lot poverty issues. We need to get the democrats to fulfill their promises or push harder for a party to the left that doesn't have corporate influence.

My husband and I have stayed in Orange Shores, Alabama a couple of times and had a great time. The people were friendly, the beach was beautiful, the preserve near there was great (we saw a cougar). I feel badly for the people we met in that their representatives seem so self absorbed that actually doing good things for the people, all the people, of the state doesn’t seem to actually occur to them.

Sections 8-10) of the Constitution lists the powers granted to Congress about collecting and spending money. It's very similar a dynamic in SC. Due to the way that they have maneuvered things over the years, you just cannot get out from under the heavy Republican domination in the state. I've been here the majority of my over 50 years, and as young people we always talked about how backwards we were compared to most other states and how behind the times we were. I remember how suffocating it always felt as young people.

As a transplant to Alabama who has lived all over the US and in France, I have so much love for the state (and I'm a left-wing, progressive, gay man with a master's). That being said, I am continuously embarrased by our politicians and most of the nonsensense coming out of Montgomery. My view is that so few current residents move or even travel outside of the state/southeast so they don't realize how far behind we are on so many things. I sincerely wish Senator Jones would make a comeback and people who have moved away to come back to help move the state forward. We need representation like this showing the rest of the country the positive work and sane perspectives coming out of Alabama.
