  • The only time they worked together in 1976. Robert De Niro and Jack Nicholson fight it out in The Last Tycoon. It's not much of a fight, but still cool to see two legends together.

Jack's dialogue delivery is so emaculate that one feels the power of every word he utters without being theatrical. He's blessed with the timing and modulation. Very few, if any, in the league.

Two poles of Method acting in the 70s - DeNiro and Nicholson - nice to see them sparring here, and under Elia Kazan, no less - Kazan co-founded the Actors' Studio, then hired Strasberg to run it - and it was Kazan's electrifying 50s films w Brando that popularized the Method - Kazan instructed DeNiro to do as little as possible here, and that's been DeNiro's ethos ever since - this is well made, but IMO none of them is at their peak here, which is why nobody's heard of this 70s film, despite its cast, despite its timing amidst DeNiro and Nicholson's greatest roles -
    - this film is easier to take on RUclips, in bits and pieces that showcase the skill - and I do feel like seeing it again after so much time - it's a different kind of filmmaking that we see less of nowadays - but I still think the fire had long since gone out of Kazan by this point - still fascinating to see how the maestro sets up the acting dynamics, his specialty -
    - and a Fitzgerald project depicting Thalberg is also very likely Kazan's own comment on the industry, for his final film - also curious to consider Kazan's thoughts re this exchange, considering his own controversial history w politics, how DeNiro feels excluded from the ping pong here (also see Beatty's Reds, w Nicholson wonderfully cast as Eugene O'Neill)
Nicholson riffed off his own persona, like Bogart or Dean, while DeNiro submerged himself like a chameleon - and, as people, Nicholson is larger than life, while DeNiro is shy and withdrawn - both are masters - I prefer DeNiro's peak 70s work, but IMO Nicholson sustained his quality more successfully over the decades - in this scene, Nicholson is more vivid, but I find myself watching DeNiro more closely -

Why do you think Jack can't be subtle, have you seen the Pledge or About Schmidt. And yes Jack could do a Johnny Boy or maybe even Jake LaMotta in his younger years, why not, it just wont be as compelling as Bob's. And Bob could possible do a Randle McMurphy, but it probably just wont have the charisma, charm and warmth Jack brought to the role which made it such a amazing performance. To say that one is better than the other is difficult because they play such different roles.

@GazmoSin1960s: Al Pacino's Scarface is a brilliant movie. The way it encompasses a man's greed. Al Pacino plays the role perfect. Any other actor would have under-played the role. Al Pacino understood that at thee bottom of the movie, it's not just a gangster film, its a story about a man who is totally obsessed with power. The brilliant symbology - the world with the Globe and all the ultra gody stuff started a trend.

It’s impossible for these guys to do a bad scene together, particularly when they were in their prime, but this is still not a great scene. In a better movie, it would’ve been hella bad ass to put these two together in the 70s. But this is probably better than nothing.
