Sowing Carrots in Cornstarch for great germination no thinning and prevent seed waste

  • Planting carrot seeds in cornstarch is a tried and tested method of seeding carrots. This method reduces seed waste by filling in the gaps in the garden for that initial good spacing right off the bat. Plus its super fun. The only good seeder out there that is precise enough for these little seeds are the Jang seeder. I don't have the means to get me one so this is the way to go.
    The mix recipe is 1 cup of water for 2 tbsps. of Cornstarch. Very important to let the mix cool down before adding the seeds to the mix.
    This method is also great for the people that can't be out in the garden to water the seedlings 3 times a day. God knows that these seeds need a lot of humidity to germinate successfully.
    Hope you enjoy this and feel free to like, comment and subscribe for more of my weekly videos.

    I have tried various methods and this time I have used the method that you described. I have soaked my seed for four days before I made the cornstarch mixture. I planted mine plus minus 1 cm deep and the carrots started showing signs on day 10. So, in total it is 14 days from soaking the seeds. In my opinion this method is by far the easiest and the quickest with the best results.

    Ok so I was intrigued by this idea and a bit skeptical since I couldn’t find a follow up video on how successful this method was for you. But I can’t resist a good garden experiment and I already had all the stuff on hand. So I followed your directions pretty much exactly and…
    IT WORKS! Holy crap it works. Less than 7 days after the start of the process (soaking the seeds) I have rows of baby carrot sprouts in my garden bed!
    I’ve never had carrots germinate and grow this quickly. This method is worth it for that aspect alone but I also appreciate that I’ll have less thinning to do than usual.
    Thank you for the tutorial! This is definitely my new go-to carrot-sowing method.

    You can easily start 10 carrots per 2" seed starter hole. When the carrots have germinated and the tops are about 2" tall, you can pop them out of the starter hole and plant them, spaced perfectly in your garden. That way, there is no need for sand or corn starch. It's easy and there's no need for thinning. Thanks, you do wonderful work.

    In Thailand they get Trichoderma or Mycorrhizae powder (can't remember which one) nd add this to boiled white rice, which in matter of week or so, turns the rice a blue/green colour. I wonder if you used rice flour, you could also add in an innoculant, once it has cooled and that would kick of the process in the slurry and migrate to the soil...but more importantly to your plants as they start generating roots.
    I am going to have to try this myself. Secondly also a very mild fully balanced liquid fertilizer at low conductivity (tiny amounts would be required, so it does not upset the germination rate, but act as a small reservoir near the seed once they begin to run out of nutrition from the seed itself typically after the first couple of true leaves appear...which process advanced pretty quickly. The problem with most fertilizer is that it misses its target by an appreciable distance and you end up with too much too near the seed, or too little to far away from where the primary root is developing. So this might be a solution and also help the plants to branch earlier than normal once microbiology signal to the seedling that nutrients are close by and the plant would do well to branch its root system. Hope this helps all the way from Australia

    The corn starch idea is brilliant. I use pelleted seed and cover them with thick row cover until they germinate. I will try the corn starch next year.

    A big hug to you girl, I tried your method of planting carrots in a cornstarch and water mixture. I changed it up just a bit, I just put the seeds in the mixture, added some water to thin it down and WHOA! in less then 3 weeks my carrots were growing. Thank you,

    Great video. The shots are nicely done! Seeded my first 100’ of carrots today. I’ll wait another week to put in more. It’s been so dry. My last Salanova and Romaine transplants are young, hot, and thirsty but look like they will make it. I’ve never tried the cornstarch solution. Very clever! Good luck with your season Mallorie!

    Thank you very much for that. I never had much luck with maincrop carrots, only with early carrots, because in the UK we tend to get dryer weather around late spring and early summer. I'll definitely give the cornstarch method a go. Only thing I wish I could see was how to pre-germinate the seeds before mixing with the cornstarch mix.

    • @HerEcolife
      @HerEcolife  4 месяца назад

      Well there are plenty of videos online that show how to germinate seeds. Type in germinating sprouts and you will find :)

    I tried your advice. My only caution in using this method is to make the hole for dispensing very small. The mixture with the seeds is very thin and will easily apply too much .wasting seeds and causing more work to thin them out later on.
    Slick Idea ! Bravo !

    • @HerEcolife
      @HerEcolife  Год назад

      Yea its best to make the hole smaller and make it bigger if needed. Making a hole smaller is a bit harder lol

    Very nice. This popped up on my feed, and as soon as I saw "carrots". I had to click on it. My carrot growing sucks, and I do it in containers, so anything carrots I watch, and I learned something today. I have never soaked carrot seeds before, so I am going to try that method. Thank you for sharing this.

    I think your carrots are going to love the soft soil, they should be able to grow more easily and straight.
    You can never go wrong with carrots, they can be used for a lot of things.

    Clever Carrot starting/planting system.
    Soil Decompaction can be done with a couple yesrs Cereal Rye and Tillage Radishes cover crops.
    Deep Aeration rips up Mycorrhizal Networks in both the top and sub soils. Good to do deep aeration for a few years to kick-start deep decompaction and areation.
    Plants gotta breathe.
