"Vee Infuso" is also a pro wrestling fan, so he might as well have noted that WWE Superstar Kane (one of my favorite wrestlers of all time) was at least indirectly inspired by Burton and Pfeiffer's design, making the stitches on his tights red instead of white. I also see in him echoes of Darth Vader and that maniacal S&M guy from Quiet Riot's "Metal Health" video (though apparently Kane was more directly inspired by Michael Myers from HALLOWEEN).

Michelle Pfeiffer deserved an Oscar nomination, if not win for her performance. I remember at the time they thought she might be a double nominee that year for Batman Returns in Supporting and Lead for Love Field. She got the Lead nom but not the Supporting and it's been a snub that stings ever since. She was perfection!
I appreciate it also because her origin story in some ways mirrors that of another comics character brought to the big screen: Brandon Lee's title character in THE CROW, which is another favorite film of mine. The alley scene below Shreck's particularly echoes that origin: Selina dead - or at least close to it - and surrounded by broken glass, but resurrected by an animal, and ultimately a latex-clad, unkillable semi-zombie out for revenge. Not only that, but James O'Barr's original comic showed that Eric Draven had a mesmerizing power over alley cats as well as his connection to his pet crow. It would be very interesting to see an alternate version of THE CROW in which it was Shelley Webster rather than Draven who came back.
@@SeasideDetective2 you know the Selena Kyle Resurrection scene in Batman returns mirrored and Catwoman graphic novel/ Elsworld story in the early 90s In that story Selena Kyle was a street hooker who was violated and brutalized and left for dead in a alley and she was resurrected by alley cat's and she goes on to take up the mantle of Catwoman
My favorite cat woman is Eartha Kitt. It's not just that Eartha Kitt was sexy, bc all the actress's who played cat woman was sexy. Eartha Kitt through herself into the character. I'm very much in the "B:TAS is the definitive version of all those characters" camp with the sole exception of Catwoman, where I feel Pfeiffer is the best actress to play the role and the most complex version. And her leitmotif is my favorite musical composition of all time.
Pfeiffer's performance as Catwoman was Oscar worthy. I love other interpretations of the character tho. Kravitz impressed me but I want to see her fully formed. Newmar was amazing as well as Eatha Kitt. I really wanted to see Pfeiffer portray her again but I don't think that will ever happen.
Personally my favorite catwoman is probably the animated series version..i kinda was disappointed how she was treated in tnba tho..maybe because there were not enough episodes with her..as tnba was around 2-3 seasons..unlike btas..which had a giant 50-60 episode count, unlike the other seasons which had 8-13, but then Gotham girls actually did her character better so idk, back to catwoman..I just like her being an anti-villian..and doing most things for good..whilst also stealing the 500th gem in the local museum.. it’s hard to put it into words, kinda like Kevin conroy or Adam west (rest in piece to those two..bro they were two of the best Batman’s..bro it actually made me cry when I heard Kevin conroy died of cancer..)
I would say given the chance with the Catwoman spin-off they planned to release just after Batman Returns, they would have her arc into being the anti-hero, having had the fantastic revenge story in this movie, discovering like Batman, that pay back doesn’t fill the void
It’s a far departure from her comic origin instead of a secretary that gets acrobatic powers from getting licked by cats she was a street orphan that learned how to fight by a golden age hero catman
@@RyanG0899 that's fair, i need to revisit the Batman again to see if maybe ur right. But i thought TDKR was great casting and it really fit that movie well
Even after all these years, BATMAN RETURNS is still an underrated classic. It's a fascinating fusion of '80s/'90s action film, lavish pseudo-period piece, and Gothic/Romantic psychosocial analysis. ROBOCOP meets the Coen Brothers meets Mary Shelley. Enough pretension, though! While I loved the Penguin's reimagining as a grotesque Victorian-style villain, Catwoman was ultimately the better character. Burton was right to go with revisionism, because the comics and TV Catwoman was always sort of bland. I'm glad this Selina Kyle is not just a sexual tease but also a tough fighter, and a nihilistic anarchist instead of a mere thief. She's actually closer to Harley Quinn here, only much more brutal and without the clown element, and I can see echoes of her in Margot Robbie's performances. I even appreciate the fact Burton defied stereotypes and didn't make Catwoman "ethnic" or "exotic." The comics Selina has jet-black hair and is either part-Latina or part-Italian, depending on which version you're reading. (Indeed, in the original BATMAN RETURNS script, Catwoman was a half-Asian, half-Caucasian sociopathic killer.) Michelle Pfeiffer's version possesses a much different mystique. In various ways, she helped to popularize both the "kooky blonde chick" and "crazed woman-child" character types that pop up again and again in our culture. I think especially of Juliette Lewis in NATURAL BORN KILLERS, minus the redneck background and less overtly bratty.
Definitely not very accurate to the the comics but a ton of fun. Its easy to see why Burton said this was his favorite performance in all of his films.
You know what? I've always had Hathaway as the best Catwoman but when you really look at Pfeiffer's performance as Catwoman, meaning not Selena, she nailed it. Unfortunately, I don't hold this movie in as high regard as many others do. Having said that, I understand why others including yourself do. Cheers
Something I really admire about Michelle Pfeiffer is that she's an autodidact. In other words, she taught herself to be an actress instead of receiving professional training. Milton Katselas gave her some advice but wasn't her formal teacher. Pfeiffer's even admitted that she suffers from Imposter Syndrome and wonders if she belongs in her profession. She's also very shy in real life and hates doing interviews. And despite all that, she's arguably the greatest actress in her generation.
Michelle Pfeiffer nailed this, my biggest complain with many Catwoman actress after this one, is that or they lean too much on the cat like attributes of the character (Halle Berry) or NOT AT ALL....(Anne Hathaway, Zoe Kravitz, Camren Bicondova), Michelle hit the perfect mix, yes her origin is way too different, but her demeanor, attitude, personality and look, is hands down the best Catwoman have ever done it in live action, to the point of inspired revisions in the main comic after the success of this film....I love The Batman and the Dark Knight Rises, but I can't say I find their versions of Catwoman anywhere near close to Pfeiffer.
She was an, at the time, unique take on the character and take on adapting a character in general. As you went over, superhero movies took the wrong lesson from this successful risk taken in doing something different. But it still works for this movie and this take on the character and works far better then other attempts at her in film. (The Batman being an exception, I like that catwoman a lot and it's more faithful as an adaption at least to one of the more popular takes on the character.)
Zoe Kravitz isn't on Michelle Pfeiffer's level but she was still good. Better than I expected and in keeping with The Batman's more toned down style, since she and Robert Pattinson were directed to be pretty stoic for most of the movie. Granted, Pattinson was carrying most of the movie but Kravitz did her job well too. I also like Anne Hathaway's sassiness and the way she took out Bane, despite being anticlimactic, was very realistic. In real life, few people get an awesome death. Come to think of it, I can't think of any Catwoman that was bad. Eartha Kitt's version was corny but that was perfect for the Adam West Batman show.
Michelle Pfeiffer looks and talks more like Black Canary dressed as Catwoman to me. I'd personally pick Janet Jackson for the part, because she would come off as a quirky and gothed-out version of Eartha Kitt's Catwoman, also her music would go well with the Burton-verse as much as Prince did in the first film.
Remember when Sean Young wanted to be Catwoman? Showing up on Tim Burton's set fully dressed and in-character! Imagine if she got the role. Probably wouldn't have been as good as Phifer's performance, but still entertaining.
