- Sky News host Caleb Bond says Labor cannot win the argument against nuclear energy on the topic of “safety” anymore.
“Sure, we do not have the numbers yet, they will come, but there is a proposal now on the table for the first time in a very long time to do something different with the energy mix in this country,” he said.
“The only way Labor can possibly hope to fight this is on the economics, they can’t win the argument about safety anymore.”

COAL and GAS work 24/7 and it's readily available NOW.
Solar does not work during the day if the sun is not shinning and it has been very cold and rainy lately just when you need the heating etc,.

@edmurks236 During winter, the sun rises around 8AM and go down by 4pm. And if it's cloudy it won't charge that batteries. Even in summer the batteries won't last all night. And without wind the windmills won't power. The fact it's costing us 1.2 to 1.5 trillion dollars for this system that has to be replaced every 20 years. And constantly adding costing more. And it's all unreliable.
An avrage house use roughly 25.400kwh a day. Business uses 100x that or more. Airports and large buildings use enormous amount of power. Add the electric cars in the future. This government must think all appliances run at 1kwH or something. This labor government is more than incompetent. They are a proven idiot.

Stuff the targets, our emissions are only 1% of the world’s emissions so who cares how long it takes to build the reactors. They will be built and saving Australian families instead of forever putting our hands in our pockets ( taxes ) . And remember that if we only go renewables in 20 years we have to pay to replace them again.

Dr Adi Paterson former CEO of ANSTO pointed out this last weekend that the success of the UAE project was due in no small part to getting the approval and licensing processes working effectively and efficiently before the reactor construction started. There are 4 Korean designed APR-1400 reactors in the Barakah plant with a total nameplate capacity of 5600 MW. Wokepedia says the reactors were completed in 6 to 8 years but not fuelled for another 2 years.
@@charlieclelland5895 1. It took 14 years from when the UAE project was approved in 2007 till the first reactor came online in 2021. This was in a command economy not having to worry about the constraints of democratic institutions nor a federated set of state governments.
2. The UAE plants are missing post-Fukishima safety measures so would be unacceptable in Australia.
3. Building nukes is labour intensive. We wont be able to use tens of thousands of cheap south Asian labourers and tradesmen on 24/7 labour rotation to build them as was the case in the UAE.
4. The UAE nuke power is very expensive ($US110/MWh or $AUD$167). It runs on warm sea water which increases maintenance costs. For comparison, the recent AEMO report on power prices (Q4 2023) shows that average wholesale prices on the NEM were $48/Mwh.

The environmental cost of making all those solar panels and wind turbines far out weighs any saving of the environment.

Solar and wind are short term solutions that will need to be replaced multiple times to match one nuclear plant. Include the loss of productivity from farmland, the environmental damage and the negative impact on our rural and coastal communities then nuclear is the sensible choice. Labour cannot override the will of the people. Bring on the election.

All of a sudden, Labor abandon the safety arguments and now want details on costings. Yet they never have provided costings for their renewables projects, like they never provided details of the Voice or dodgy legislation that they have raced through parliament. eg the Digital ID and E Safety legislation.
1.3 trillion dollars for renewables is not for all time. It is the cost of the transition and then the life of that infrastructure which is 10 to 15 years for batteries and wind turbines and 20+ for solar.
Correct that is to 2030. Estimates have it at $6-$7 trillion to 2050 and up $7- $9 trillion by 2060. The cost with renewables never stops. Be nice if someone did renewables costings for 80 years so a like for like comparison with nuclear.
From some research, I found the yearly maintenance and operational cost for a 2-3 MW wind turbine averages around $46000 US dollars per unit per year.
Then add somewhere between the $2 to $4 million dollar range to build them and then depending on the environment they last about 15 years before needing to be replaced on top of that they only supply power for about 30% of a year.
When you compare with nuclear that will cost roughly between 140 to 200 billion that last for 40 to 60 years. That's a hell of a lot cheaper and more reliable than renewables that rely only on sun and wind.
I have a caravan on solar when I'm of grid if I use the air conditioner or heater I'm lucky to get 3 to 4 hours life from my lintum iron batteries I have to use my car to power it or a generator running on fuel. I'm limited to the amount of appliances I can use for other while the air con is on.
It be no different than Albo renewables. In winter the sun is lucky to rise by 8am. And goes down at 4PM if it's cloudy it won't charge the batteries..Australia lucky to get 2 days a week at most of adequate wind for windmills. People will be limited to eqwipment usage business use enormous amounts of power especially cold storage forcilitties. Airports and foundries ect. Albo must think people's appliances is all 1kw a day or something. We won't have enough power to run all the heaters in winter. Or the air-conditioning in summer. Labor are a bunch of twits

There is a point that has not been spoken about the costings of nuclear. Dutton said the the Nuclear Power Stations will be owned by the Federal Government. If the Nuclear Power Stations are producing the bulk of the base load power of electricity, what is the income from selling the electricity. The income made, lowers the cost of making the electricity, which in turn lowers the cost to the people of Australia.
Look at the state of Victoria, if Labor gets their way we are stuffed..surely a energy mix is required..ffs 😮

Labor don’t have costs for the renewables, so why do the LNP have to provide the costing after making their announcement. Simple release the figures for the upgrade of Lucas heights. We can’t rely on the Labor current push for renewables to take over our base load power. Whenever any major infrastructure projects need to be built our forebears didn’t debate the cost for people at he current time, but they thought about future generations. LNP have to make sure the nuclear plants have already started to be built and they will be to far down the track for Labor to stop them, but here’s hoping after the failures of this Labor government, then it will be awhile until they have the reins of power again.
The Government keeps ranting about the cost of Nuclear, yet they spend per year, $80 billion dollars combined on the NDIS and first nations people and growing. That would pay for 4-5 Nuclear plants.

It's hard to effectively cost out a project that isn't legal in the country so no one has invested any time in to what it takes or even looked at the requirements the best way to see how viable reactors are in the country is to lift the ban. It's easy to argue one form of power generation is better than another when one is government subsidised and the other is illegal

AEMO says that the East Coast will need 26 diesel powered gas power stations because there is a shortage of gas on the East Coast after Labor destroyed incentive to invest in gas extraction with price caps.

Currently in the USA, the decommissioning of a Nuclear Power Station has to be completed 60 years after the cessation of operations. It can be longer if the process is required to protect Public Health or safety. A 50 year break is required for radioactive decay and 10 years is required to dismantle the facility. This is a very costly exercise. A renewable power station does not require a complicated process such as this for decommissioning.

The damage and destruction caused to our environment and the sheer cost of building 28000 (yes thousand) kilometres of transmission systems is beyond belief. Given the grid will be connecting massive renewable farms that have a life span of only 20 years each is mind blowing. Throw in the reality that energy output from these "farms occurs for around 30% of the day and on average 10% is lost through the transmission process. Then consider the option of nuclear power with potential output 24/7, located on existing power plant sites, using existing grid. No brainer. Case closed.

1. It is not 28000 km. AEMO's estimate is 10,000 km, and the estimate is falling as time goes by and other technologies come into play. The Victoria big battery has increased the transmission capacity of the NSW interconnector to better cope with summer peaks in demand, a cheapre alternative than extra transmission
2. Your estimated lifespan of 20 years is way too low. One of Australia's oldest windfarms (Starfish Hill) has had its license extended to 2033, giving 30 years of operation. US windfarms commissioned in the 1980's are still in operation
3. Nowhere in the world has a nuclear plant been built on the site of an old coal plant. They have very different operational requirements.
4. Nuclear is no guarantee of 24/7 operation. They have to go offline for a month every couple of years for refuelling. On top of that they can often suffer long term outages. Of 92 operating US power reactors by mid-2017 only 28 did not suffer at least one outage of a year or more. In 2022, France had to dim the lights on the Eiffel Tower after it lost over 50% of its nuclear capacity at the peak of summer. This means you have to have substantial long term backup as a contingency

The LNP must have consulted a 17 year old kid about locating Nuclear Reactors in Loy Yang - Victoria, Port Augusta - South Australia and Callide / Gladstone - Queensland as these locations are listed Geological / Earthquake Risk Zones. The location of Lithgow is subject to Low Ground Water concerns.
There has been a catastrophic failure of a Nuclear Power Station in Japan called Fukushima which was caused by an Earthquake / Tsunami.
The LNP has obviously not performed any form of Risk Assessment - does the LNP have a suitable disaster plan for such an event as the one that occurred in Japan?
The Coalitions plant locations were based on where current or former coal fired power stations were located so that the existing grid connections could be reused and the cooling water resources also reused.
Which Fukushima? Daiichi lost its diesel backup generators when the bund wall was overtopped by the tsunami. The operating reactors suffered melt downs and hydrogen explosions. Daini also lost backup but there was an external line into the plant and the operators got enough of the pumping capacity on line to bring the reactors to cold stop.
Onagawa, further north, and arguably hit by an even stronger earthquake and tsunami, survived because it had a high bund wall which didn't get overtopped, Some of the plant buildings were damaged by the earthquake but the plant shut down as designed.
Remove the laws impeding interest in making actual nuclear economic proposals.
CSIRO and the gen report and other atrociously modelled reports need to be pulled and removed from public debate until responsible, correct modelling is done.

It would be extremely beneficial for you to build nuclear as an alternative to fossil fuel power plants. Just learn from Japans mistake and not build them in seismically active areas.

Australia used to be a world leader in space pioneering... but then we just gave up. Now, we have realised too late that we are at a critical disadvantage and risk by not having a space program. That program and more will be dependent on our nuclear industry.
I guarantee, if we opt out of nuclear, there will come a time where our defence, medical and space industry advancements will come to a complete standstill and we will be forced to adopt a nuclear program in the eleventh hour... when even now is already far too late.

Spent nuclear fuel stays a radiation hazard for extended periods of time with half-lifes as high as 24,000 years. For example 10 years after removal from a reactor, the surface dose rate for a typical spent fuel assembly still exceeds 10,000 rem/hour-far greater than the fatal whole-body dose for humans of about 500 rem received all at once.
Depends whether the fuel rods are reprocessed to extract the Uranium and transuranics to reuse as fuel. The unused fuel and transuranics represent the long half life part of the spent fuel The fission products alone decay down to background in about 300 years.
Solar panels have a limited life somewhere between 15 -20 years. How toxic are the chemicals used in solar panels? These chemicals as I understand cannot be recycled or re-used.
Where does the power required to start wind turbines turning come from? I'm informed coal fired electricity. Just why cant we have nuclear without the politics and fear.
