It still baffles me that Steely Dan reunited many years later and never re-recorded this song. I'm sure there were still rhythm charts somewhere. This arrangement is killer, y'all. Thanks for bringing this "lost" song to life.
after it got erased they did try to rerecord it, but apparently they couldnt get it like it was before, and they gave up on trying. i guess they couldnt capture the magic again
International Dan Collective co ordinated by Scott Sheriff from Nashville recorded The Second Arrangement in studio 6 months ago. It is on RUclips and is a simply superb rendition the best I have heard . It features Bill Schnee a Grammy winner from Aja as engineer and arranger, Michael Omartian a Steely Dan session player on piano and three great singers all taking turns at lead. Scott from TN Keys has to take a lot of credit. He is a super musician and an avid fan of Fagen and Becker. It’s a great pity they couldn’t get permission to release this version it’s that good.
@@amusicment4829 I personally like Ole Borud of the vocalists. He has a strong alto voice and also plays lead guitar at the end. Scott is a capable vocalist as well. Jerry has more of sweet softer voice and of the three strains a bit.
In light of the recent release of the Nichols cassette, and what we've all heard on it, this is an excellent rendition of what the completed version may have been.
Be sure to find the re-engineered versions of the lost tape (now found) to see that these guys nailed it. As I understand the horns are missing from the DAT so people are debating whether to add them in.
There are barely prominent horns in the band's only live version from 2011, certainly compared to most of their latter career material. I am sure this is knowable but I wouldn't be entirely surprised if they weren't done composing for the horn section, to the standards they wanted, when the erasure happened.
Simply funky funk... I've been a steely dan addict for many years... I'm going on a limb here... but I think even the Donald would find this band and this rendition... INCREDIBLE
This singer actually sounds like Joe Jackson, who was also greatly influenced by Steely Dan. He would sound great covering songs like "Is She Really Going Out With Him", "Steppin' Out", and "Breaking Us In Two".
Sounds GREAT. This song would have DEFINITELY been on the radio back around '80 if everything had gone "swimmingly" in the studio that week. I wonder if Fagen uses the word "swimmingly" often.
I keep coming back to this video, because it's such a good performance of a tune I can't get from my favorite artist! Damn, what a tune, and what a performance!
Yo Scott. If you're reading this, your ear is phenomenal! The biggest complement you can get for covering a tune...,"Sounds just like the record!" You guys really do.👌
Thanks for bringing this lost tune to life as I imagine it would sound with Steely Dan performing it. I've heard Steely Dan's rough mix of this song from the "Guacho" sessions, and it's a catchy song.
You guys did a great job transcribing by ear the arrangement of this tune from that fuzzy-sounding aborted 2nd attempt (after the erasure). I was extremely fortunate to have been an audience member at the Rarities show in NYC only a short while before this performance. You're not the first cover-group to do this song. This is by far the best version one could hope for seeing a group of musicians so faithful in their "re-authentication." Thanks, a big Dan fan.
BRAVO!!! Very well done. During the intro to the version at the "Rarities" show, Donald Fagen did mention that horns were on the tape. Your arrangement is probably very close to what they had.
Fabulous! .. Brilliant! ... This is THE BEST rendition of this great song that I have ever heard ... The singer sounds SO like Donald Fagen .. (although Donald's intros tend to be a little shorter!)
I agree with Morcaiden, this deserves tens of thousands of views. To the band, Thanks for your hard work putting this together for us to enjoy, all the best.
Thanks for posting this. I only heard this lost gem for the first time this week. Nice to hear what it might have sounded like fleshed out in the studio. Great tune.
Very excellent performance & arrangement. Far better than I expected. Thanks for sharing this. You guys are pros! It is a very addictive song just like many of the Dan tunes are.
I’ve seen a few Steely Dan cover bands over the years and, after watching several of their videos, I am very impressed with this one. Very tight band, very true to the Dan’s form!
These guys are session musicians from the Nashville recording studios -- guys you've probably heard -- but never heard of. Scott Sheriff (keys, vocals) is Carrie Underwood's musical director. Tom Hemby (lead guitar) has done tracks on more albums than you can count. Each one of these musicians is a pro. Thanks to the wealth of talent that lives and works in Music City, there are a bunch of amazing "tribute" bands in the Nashville area, made up of some of the same people -- "Make Me Smile" (Chicago), "Live From Ventura Blvd." (70s - 80s hits), "Eaglemaniacs" (Eagles) to name a few. You can catch them live at 3rd and Lindsley, a great little venue in Nashville, on a Friday or Saturday night. Check 'em out here on RUclips!
The only recording I've seen (from the Beacon Theater in NYC) was of much poorer audio/video quality, so I think it's an unfair comparison. This sounds great, they're both great and should be played more.
Walter Becker... 9/3/2017 wonder if they had finished this song and released it back then if it would've had that Gaucho "stink" on it and been a fan favorite? I still love the title track best.
I love this, but this is also why I don't miss live music (apart from the actual SD). A band practices for a long, long time, book dates to suit the needs of their own members which is tricky when they get older, people book tickets which can be tricky these days, many journeys have to be made by the musicians, technicians and audience, you may not have a brilliant view of the stage....but you got there...and then...people TALK and drunkenly chitter chatter all over the quiet parts and between the tracks themselves. And this was audience behaviour before the pandemic. I hope people never take what goes into live music production for granted again and actually respect musicians when they attend shows in the future. If you want to chat shiz go outside. You can do that any day or hour of the week.
Very nice! I was at the Beacon when the boys played this tune. A job well done by 12vN. As far as Donald's vocals are concerned, no one can replicate them so that point is moot.
What I don't understand is how they decided not to proceed with putting this song on the album. I mean I understand that the master was recorder over, but they must have had the original recorded tracks somewhere, so they could (re)mix the record and place it on Gaucho? Or were those instruments removed (save for the horns) as well?
Steely Dan were perfectionists. The master track was their perfect version of the song, so when it got recorded over, they tried to re-record it but never got anywhere close to the original copy and opted to never release it
@@alexanderthegreat1270 kinda late to the party, but some people theorize that they chose to not re-record because of the dispute with their record label. And I've heard some people say that Donald Fagen destroyed it to sabotage the record label. But it was most definitely just a mistake, because this song would've been probably the best song on the Gaucho album
Steely Dan is so good that even their non-existent songs are masterpieces!
Kulee Baba is a miracle.

The Donald said he couldn't hit those high notes anymore.... keep in mind Steely Dan didn't release another album for 20 years after this.
after it got erased they did try to rerecord it, but apparently they couldnt get it like it was before, and they gave up on trying. i guess they couldnt capture the magic again
One of their best songs ever, such a loss to the Gaucho era!!
@@BleedingEdgeOfProgress Dan hit some pretty high notes in Everything Must Go, soo
@@DanielFerreira-ez8qd Yeah, they have never been above using technology to get the sound they want. Nobody sings with their natural voice anymore.

Nope, there's one cover better than this one.
I found some recent restored versions of the original which sound pretty good, a little grainy but it sounds great and Donald’s voice is good on it

Nicely done! The horn arrangement is tasty. Thanks for recording this. The song actually begins at 01:33.
