Hey man. I'd like to let you know a few things:
    1) Respect the locals and the local rules. That means inform yourself (Google will help you) about whether you need a license or not. Don't be ignorant and get that licence.
    2) Inform yourself about what kinds of fish you can expect to catch and then choose your fishing tackle according to that. You don't want to create unnecessary harm to the fish because of using the wrong gear and thus loosing it. This is not smart.
    3) Handle fish with care. Aim to always use a landing net and more important never ever throw fishes with a certain size back into the water from a greater distance. They may be hurt. There are special landing nets with robes attached to it for these situations. Do not use gloves to touch them. Instead make sure your hands are wet so you wont destroy the fragile mucuos membrane, which surrounds the fish and protects it.
    4) Don't push your ego with the fact that you disobeyed the rules. It's not cool man. That goes back to 1) respect the locals.
The fish you caught was a mullet btw. They are really shy and rarely caught on artificial lures. Congrats!
You seem like a cool guy. Keep on fishing and add some ethics to it and you'll be fine. Good luck.

I´m from Cascais, the fish you catch is caled "tainha" it`s from the family of sea bass but not eatble because they like to live in "dirty" areas like marinas. The first spot is extremely ilegal to fish because that area is a natural reserve and it`s not allowed to fish, i was surprise the local cops didn´t aproach you,. If you choose to go to Guincho that is very near to the marina you might get really lucky, because that is a really good place for big seabass.
Ps: sorry if i made grammar mistakes

Ontario Fishing Kids Hi I know I'm a bit late but that fish is actually a thin lipped mullet quite rare to catch these on plugs since they are algae eaters.
      Not actually related to seabasses,
Another tip is don't use a steel leader when targeting seabass they are line shy.
The only common fish with big teeth are bluefish and barracudas but they are more targeted either with big poppers or Metal jigs and spoons.
And sometimes you can get away with no steel leader using long minnows.

Two points, sorry correction three, firstly it’s great that you appreciate the gorgeous Portugal, second you need to respect the rules and understand that all countries are different, this is for future reference and it sends out a big message, in Portugal all fishing needs a licence, I have been going there for many years and have respected the environment and as the saying goes, “when in Rome do as the Romans do” in today’s modern world it’s so easy to check what is and what is not acceptable, and one can get a licence from, or through the internet, and I mean it’s so cheap.
Third, check out Nick the informative fisherman, an American guy that does fantastic fishing vloggs that you will adore, as a reference, the guy shakes, but if you want to know fishing and you seem like a nice guy, give his channel a visit, in the words of you American, The Guys Awesome! DG New Forest UK keep up the Vloggs and as we have all had to do, learn!

You were very lucky that day…normal cops don't care about fishing, but Maritime cops do! Fines for ilegal fishing in protected natural areas and Marinas are heavy! 500 euros up! a simple licence for fishing in all national territory is about 20 euros for the all year( 1 January to 31 of Dezember) and a local licence is 12 euros. The fines go from 500 euros to 1000 or more! And your gear is confiscated! And you pay if you are a non resident in the country in the spot! You can get the licence for the ATM! Is that simple!
