  • 0800054 - Hybla Fair - 1974 - 15:15 - Black&White and Color - HYBLA FAIR was an underground, horizontal line-of-sight (LOS) weapons-effects test conducted at the Nevada Test Site on October 28, 1974. The test had a relatively small design yield of less than 20 kilotons. This lower yield test was thought to be appropriate because an earlier, larger yield test caused loss of valuable data when the force of the detonation through the LOS pipe destroyed experiments. However, the HYBLA FAIR test had an insufficient yield to provide the amount of radiation necessary for the LOS experiments to perform as anticipated and the desired data was not obtained.
An LOS pipe allows scientists to take measurements of the effects of heat, blast and radiation. The pipe has a diameter ranging from a few inches to as much as 30 feet. Inside the pipe, with the nuclear device at the small end, experiments are set up to be exposed to the radiation effects, but not the shock and blast effects. These effects are prevented from rushing through the pipe by fast-closing steel doors. Radiation travels faster than blast and shock waves, thus allowing the doors to close and the radiation tests to be conducted.

So it's like a drinking straw for your nuke. Cool!

Very interesting insight on how much harder it is to monitor nuclear effects in a tunnel than on a coral atoll..... I did think they were seriously optimistic about sealing that tube with grout with a nuclear blast coming up the pipe.... As it turned out they needed a bigger nuke for the test results and the small one had already trashed the site... back to the drawing board.....
Anyone know how come this secret test film was produced by Pan Am ?

It is sad that so much money cannot be spent on more useful and benifical stuff for the benifit of our people.

Where do you think nuclear biology and nuclear medicine came from??? The materials created because of the atomic energy revolution created high speed data transfer and scanning electron microscopes The devices used in unlocking DNA and the human genome were created because of the data gathered in nuclear testing.

Well said, rdc121674. Not to mention: the jobs and careers this field supports, offshoot benefits as rdc mentioned-nuke med's & DNA-as NASA has also, and the defense structure. Steve R is obviously a lib, and libs love to rail against the US and her defenses, but when we're attacked its "where were we?!?!" These tests provide info for nuke-powered ships, NASA has looked at technology gained from detonations for rockets (not nuke rockets, just info), and not to mention deterrence, especially in the 70's. We weren't attacked, were we? Nukes helped with that. Steve is here to bitch about it because of tests like this. It is sad that so many idiots ruin it for the rest of "our" people.

+Steve R Not a lib, just smart enough to repair Ultrasound Imiaging system's for ATL. And Avaionic's system's for Rockwell.

Such billion dollar experiments can only be done if Our Fine Military has unconditional unlimited access to the people's treasury . Allowed by the two allowed political parties.
Any president that has different ideas about that should remember 1963.

What exactly were they trying to find out? That nuclear explosions make big bangs and release heat and radiation? I thought they already knew that from Hiroshima.

No, that wasn't the purpose of these tests. The underground effects tests were conducted to determine how weapon generated effects such as radiation affect things like nuclear warheads (one was depicted in a graphic during the film) and communications equipment. In a first strike or retaliatory targeting environment where multiple warheads were allocated to a single target, warheads were required to function when nearby, simultaneous nuclear detonations were occurring. Developing methods to protect equipment and materiel from these effects was a priority military/security goal.

Can you say Fukushima and the 170 million gallon's of radioactive waste we have here in the Hanford reservation. We have some 6000 nuclear waste dump's here in the US. By the way Robert Openhimer is my favoriot phyisist. Nuclear power is stupid; what are you going to do with the used fuel rod's ?
