@Erik Lerström Are you talking about Alien resurrection? Because Alien 3 especially the assembly cut was damn good, sure it wasn't the first two but it was a solid effort even if it isn't a perfect sequel, one thing is for sure though it will never be as bad a Prometheus or Resurrection, Covenant was okay but again it isn't a good sequel-prequel due to the lore changes.
I don't like the alternate version of Alien 3. Seeing the prisoners outside undermines the idea that the planet is almost uninhabitable. The scene with the dead cow is dull, has mediocre acting, and the dialog is all exposition dump. The theatrical version does actually contain the best of what was shot.
...Which one? Because the one with the Black Frieghter was pointlessly extended, as even Snyder himself said they didn't really know what to do with it.
@@oscarmccormack1611 that's not the one he's talking about, that's some extra special version that got put on BluRay. The regular directors cut doesn't have that.
Lol the theatrical cut was already like 1/2 Sherriff of Nottingham. Anymore, even if it was the best part of the movie, and they couldn't call it Robin Hood anymore.
The Phantom Menace DVD was an extended version over the VHS. I liked how Shmee shows concern about Anakin racing as he's preparing, and the extended podrace too.
yeah, specially since people were too stupid to not get the underlying story the movie was telling and the subtext so they just assumed it was bad/shallow when it was anything but grrr still angers me to this day I'm glad the extended cut cleared things out tho I can just picture Zack being in the editing room like "we don't need that scene people can watch me movie and take something from it without it being explained to them" then everyone went "lol movie bad" Zack was probably like "goddammit I'll add it in the extended edition then so people finally get it" I honestly feel like it's like the scene in Psycho that also explains what the movie was about right at the end, people at the time didn't get it to Hitchcock added that scene so people didn't get weird/mixed opinion on it, honestly I think Zack should've done the same, even if in like 50 years people would look back and think it's obvious/dumb
@@oscarmccormack1611 But that's not what good DLC is. Good DLC is put into production after the full game is released as optional extra content if you enjoyed the base game. A lot of bad DLC is content deliberately removed from the game.
Theatrical Cut: Wait, why is this rando blacksmith who doesn’t know how to sword fight suddenly a genius military commander? Director’s Cut: Oooohhhhhhh... okay.
Final Cut is great. I still love the original cut too, because of its film noir style. The "director's cut" is the worst (and it was not actually overseen by the director - that was just a marketing ploy).
I only ever saw the extended LOTR for years and years until I finally watched the theatrical versions just this weeks. The pacing in the theatrical versions seems much too fast, also like there are gaps in certain elements of the story. I think that most of scenes added in the EE actually do help the story move on and flow better.
The Abyss has easily one of the most important Director's cuts. Full on different ending, more context and development, and special effects. It's really a must watch.
@9:09 I laughed so hard at this interaction because it is so true. Bought the Matrix trilogy on blu-ray from Bestbuy. Tell a friend because I thought it was a great deal. He says he got it off Amazon for 15 bucks less. Eyes glowed red, shouted "you sum'beech why didnt you tell me". LOL.
I've been looking for the Kingdom of Heaven director's cut for years, but in my third world country the only way to get it it's through the US, which would be as expensive as a kidney, I think that a lot of the streaming services should get a hand in distributing this cuts so a lot of people can watch the best version.
@@Vandreren83 Theatrical cut leaves more up to interpretation, director's cut adds the philosophy of time travel book excerpts so that Donnie's actions make a bit more sense with that context...But then again, a major theme of the film is whether or not Donnie is losing his grip on reality and going insane, so having that confirm early on that Donnie is fine and it's just the world he's in that's fucked up kind of spoils that in my opinion. I think the director's cut is a more accessible film, but not necessarily a better one.
Kingdom of Heaven’s DC adds an entire subplot with a character’s son (who is absent from the theatrical), more character development overall for the main characters. I liked the theatrical cut but after watching the DC, I’ll only watch that now. I’d recommend it to people.
You forgot the Super Duper Cut of Deadpool 2 (a.k.a. the extended cut of Deadpool 2). After seeing Deadpool 2 in the theatre I felt some pieces were missing, the Super Duper Cut really filled in the blanks. I liked both versions. You also didn't mention X-Men: Days of Future Past - The Rogue Cut. Which has some key changes from the theatrical cut. Both have their own merits, but I wouldn't mind a third cut which uses scenes from both movies, as certain scenes I liked better in the theatrical version and others I liked better in the Rogue Cut.
The extended cut of The Abyss adds back in some very good (if a bit heavy-handed) additional motivation for the aliens that fleshes them out. It was cut to hit a 90 minute runtime enforced by the studio.
There is one improvement the shorter version has over the extended. In Return of the King when Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli were charging across the battlefield while the ghosts are clearing out everything, the Fellowship theme is playing, where in the extended it is the regular battle theme for Return of the King
I don't know if "can't see everything" while showing Daredevil was the editor being cheeky, or if the podcast heron actually did go into Daredevil movie talk right there, but either way thats the best Segway James had ever done.
It depends really. Some cuts are just xtra scenes with non finished CGI, some it’s actually extended movie (LOTR, BvS) and then you have unprecedented cases like the Snyder Cut where it’s an entirely different movie. The real deciding factor it’s whether these scenes have meaning to the theatrical release and actually improve the plot
Spider-Man 3 Editor’s Cut!! It reshuffles some scenes around and adds in some new ones. The first important one changes the “butler reveal” at the end of the movie. Instead of being sloppily told what happened to his dad, Harry looks at a graduation photo of himself, Peter, & MJ and cries. Another scene entirely changes the symbiote’s function in the story. It makes it seem like Peter is an addict suffering from withdrawal without the suit, and he’s freaking out a little bit in his apartment. He finally goes to the black suit and smiles eerily at it; you can faintly hear the symbiote make a noise to him, too. Cool stuff
I can't sing the extended cuts praises of Incredible Hulk enough. Marvel/Universal butchered the original cut by omitting most of the Bruce Banner character elements. 😠
@@RetroIsaac Only fan edits. All the deleted scenes from the Blu-ray spliced into the film make it pure bliss. It's impossible to find anymore, but Tomahawk Extended Edition is the closest thing to Norton's vision. Adding a whopping 30+ minutes of character development places it in Winter Soldier calibur territory. Just my opinion though.
The extended cut of Kingdom of Heaven is so good. So many things and motives make more sense. I liked the theatrical release, but it was just okay. The extended version is one of my top ten favorite movies.
The crab walking in the exorcist wasn't in the theatrical cut due to them not being able to hide the wiring harnedd on the actress. But by 2000 they could paint out the wired digitally.
haha, I just posted about this, not knowing this comment existed already. Yes, it's better because it does away with the hand-holding opening voice over narration.
Brazil is a great movie, try to find the best cut and make sure you’re in a patient mood, it’s wprth the time and if you saw it years ago another chance
My favorite Extended/Director’s Cuts are for Kingdom of Heaven, I love the added character development at the beginning it adds to Orlando Bloom’s character and makes him much more relatable, although I honestly like both versions of the film. I also love the Final and Ultimate Cuts of Alexander, MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME. That’s not a popular opinion but I really just enjoy the extended parts that allow scenes to breathe more. I know it’s considered bad but I just love the scale, the over the top acting and that score!
It does. Just wish they took the samurai mech out and let the ninja battle be the main end fight. The movie had this cool asian gangster movie vibe until the robot showed up
The Spider Walk was originally cut from "The Exorcist" because it screws up the pacing of the film. It's undeniably a good scene, but it falls between two scenes that should not be interrupted with a big effect scene. The "Version You've Never Seen" is a really clear example of NOT a director's cut. Everything put back in is stuff Friedkin cut for good reason. It ends up being a weird mish-mash though because when he agreed to create a version with this stuff back in, he also tinkered with the effects and inserted stuff like the "subliminal" demon faces.
That's like the one bad directors cut. The ending is way worse, I like the blue filter and the events of the movie work much better with the humorous narration, rather then being self serious and bleak.
Jackson turned a single (technically children's) book into 3 full length movies in the Hobbit. It was the perfect coalescence of a powerful director who didn't know when to edit and a company that was perfectly willing to squeeze every cent out of the IP.
Directors cuts are usually bloated and have vastly inferior pacing to the theatrical release. There are exceptions, but normally scenes are dropped for a reason.
I swear by the Lord of the Rings extended cuts, and I think they are necessary for the Hobbit movies as well, especially the third one; I did not like the theatrical version of that movie at all, but the extended cut fixed a lot of the issues I had with it. Same with the extended cut of Batman V Superman. Still not a perfect movie by any stretch of the imagination, but much improved upon what we saw in the theater.
I've found that the Extended Hobbit films communicate the intentions of expanding the story better than the theatrical cuts. The main difference is an entire subplot with the rings of power that got completely cut, along with more foreboding of Thorin's descent into madness and lots of nice character moments. Lots of fleshing out of the world which puts the Lord of the Rings into more context for non-book fans like me. Plus, I don't get the comparisons to the Star Wars prequels. Disappointment is a subjective thing of course but if we're just talking movie making craft and acting . . . I don't get it.
Directors cuts are always better. Watchmen, BvS, Blade Runner, Daredevil, Kingdom of Heaven and the list can go on. Sometimes it needed that extra 5 or 10 minutes to flesh the story and characters more to understand the final ending. Makes a difference for storytelling and can impact the financial success of the film.
The director’s cut of Army of Darkness and the producer’s cut of Halloween 6 are both pretty good but the Robocop one is definitely my favorite. Also, I hope they eventually release an extended cut of Revenge of the Sith because the original cut before the theatrical cut was like four and a half hours long
I was hoping they'd talk about Army of Darkness. The weird thing is that both versions of that movie contain both good and bad things (and in the commentary for the director's cut, there's a scene where Raimi says he prefers the other version, so fuck knows why he included it). The ideal version would be a mix of both cuts. For instance, you really need to keep the original ending with its classic "Hail to the King" line. Perhaps you could follow it with the other ending, so that the first ending is just a dream.
I understand James and his wife have just had a kid and have less time to commit to this RUclips channel. II am absolutely thrilled that there has been made a way to keep up the quantity of videos weekly through animated podcast videos. Absolutely love the channel lads, keep up the unbelievable work!
The Lord of the Rings was epic in its extended cuts. I remember seeing the Mines for the first time, seeing the mythril. Almost straight out of the books. Personally i prefer the extended for LotR, but then i read the books so.
100% agree with James regarding LOTR. Him talking about it has finally made me call my mom to have her mail over my extended editions after years of just seeing the theatricals on streaming platforms.
The extended version of bvs made me like it more. The first scene of the movie where it gives more context makes you be able to follow the movie better. I like it but it is kind of hard to watch because it is slow
I will agree the extended version is way better than the theatrical cut, but it’s still a lame movie. I just remember leaving the theatre thinking “what the fuck...”
The home release version of Clue with all of the alternate endings stitched together is technically an extended cut and greatly improves the final act (acts?). I think that's one of the reasons it's regarded as a cult classic today.
because its black & white lol. Its the exact same movie. Mangold got to make the movie he always wanted to make so there was no need for an extended DC.
Sucker Punch is worth a watch, honestly I wasn't into it at all in theaters but was much more able to get into the plot on second viewing. It's definitely better visually than plot wise, for sure, but the movie works pretty well if you follow it from start to finish. The conceit of hallucinations/day dreams allows Zack to put literally whatever he wants on screen and that allows for some stunning visuals, but the plot holds it together pretty well. Sure it's no Watchmen, which I personally think will rank up high with the best CBMs over time and probably even transcend the genre for some. But it's still pretty good!
When they are actual Directors cut they are usually better, however sometimes a directors cut is just an alternative cut called that for marketing purposes (Alien for example in which Ridley Scott stated that the theatrical cut is his true director's cut).
I know it's unrelated to the video. But I hope that DC have a clear path and I don't care if one movie is "dark" and another one is hopeful and we get 2-3 movies a year. Ben Affleck is my favourite batman and Bruce Wayne and I hope he returns and makes the deathstroke movie he intended to make. And what the fuck is happening with the flash movie. My boy Ezra is too busy choke slamming.
I think the Flash movie is finally coming along, it's gonna be directed by Andy Muschietti. Also, rumours of Cyborg being in the movie is circulating again.
i can’t help but feel like listening to these two talk is what it must be like to have a dad all the films shown looked old af, but it’s so interesting to hear them talk about them 😂💛✌️
Okay, so I already know I’m going to like this video. That early comment about thumbs up deserves some serious recognition. Good on your editor, James, what a campion. He seriously adds to your and Mason’s humor.
I kinda despise director's cut. Extended cut are just extra scenes in a movie that were cut because they weren't important enough (LOTR are good examples, i like those but in the end you really don't need those extra hours) and i'm ok with them because they are...irrelevant when done correctly. They shouldn't be stupid like the hobbit with a key plot point being solved in the extended cut... But the director's cut sound like an excuse to me, the idea that "oh yeah my movie was great but someone else ruined it" it's very often bullshit, expecially when there is a huge director behind them. The snyder's cut feels like a DLC that promise to fix a game that was broken at release and people are cheering at the fact that they'll be able to spend more money on it.
The Spider-Man 3 editor's cut solves some problems, using some added and rearranged scenes, so that's my recommendation. The rearranging and new scenes help the development of the relationship between Peter and Harry. Harry's is motivated better, not through the speech from Bill Paxton's dad.
A lot of time the studio is the one demanding cuts and other dumb shit to be taken out, so i say absolutely. I'd rather see what it was meant to be shown as instead of an edited down version.
True Director's cuts are always better. Not when it's a cash grab like they used to do back in the mid 2000s with DVDs or you had the unrated version of so many movies that released on home video that just added 5 minutes or something like that to peak your interest and boost home video sales.
Spider-Man 2's extended cut adds the scene where J Jonah Jameson puts on the Spidey costume and jumps around his office. Best extended cut. I knew you wouldn't mention it though. Bloody James.
The director's cut of Amadeus is long but significantly better. I watched the director's cut first without knowing it and then bought the DVD which was only the theatrical cut and thought I was losing my mind that scenes I remember were missing.
Funny for James to talk about releasing different versions of the same thing when this is just a clip from the podcast and Caravan of Garbage has two versions.

@Erik Lerström It was not CGI, it was a puppet on green screen !!!! (...cricket sounds)
I liked Alien 3 better than anything that came after it.
@@bigrooster6893 never realized it, but yeah, so did I. And I actually kinda enjoyed Prometheus and Covenant.
Little Shop of Horrors' director's cut is the best.
I've never had a problem with Sucker Punch. I don't get why people don't like it.
It's drivel.
It's empty and self-indulgent

Zack Snyder: King of Director’s Cuts
@@oscarmccormack1611 that's not the one he's talking about, that's some extra special version that got put on BluRay. The regular directors cut doesn't have that.

Okay. What's the difference between the theatrical cut and the extended cut?
The “directors cut” I wish existed, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves: The Alan Rickman Stuff Kevin Costner Personally Cut Out Of Jealously
Same. Alan played the hell outa that role
Sucker Punch is MUCH better in the extended version,
simply because of the one scene that was deleted that explains the whole film
yeah, specially since people were too stupid to not get the underlying story the movie was telling and the subtext so they just assumed it was bad/shallow when it was anything but grrr still angers me to this day
I'm glad the extended cut cleared things out tho
I can just picture Zack being in the editing room like "we don't need that scene people can watch me movie and take something from it without it being explained to them"
then everyone went "lol movie bad"
Zack was probably like "goddammit I'll add it in the extended edition then so people finally get it"
I honestly feel like it's like the scene in Psycho that also explains what the movie was about right at the end, people at the time didn't get it to Hitchcock added that scene so people didn't get weird/mixed opinion on it, honestly I think Zack should've done the same, even if in like 50 years people would look back and think it's obvious/dumb

Extended Cuts are just cinematic DLC
Some of them good, some of them bad.
Except you always have to pay for them
Technically, DLCs are just video game extended cuts
@@PittsburghSonido
Either way, you shouldn't have to pay for something that should be in the base "game" in the first place.
@@oscarmccormack1611 But that's not what good DLC is. Good DLC is put into production after the full game is released as optional extra content if you enjoyed the base game. A lot of bad DLC is content deliberately removed from the game.
Kingdom of Heaven was god damn amazing... as long as you watched the director's cut heh.
Agreed
The crazy thing is the difference between the two. Theatrical cut? We were heckling it in the theater. Director's cut? One of my favorite films.
Theatrical Cut: Wait, why is this rando blacksmith who doesn’t know how to sword fight suddenly a genius military commander? Director’s Cut: Oooohhhhhhh... okay.
Yeah, the directors cut is amazing.
Blade runner final cut is the definitive cut
I watched it recently, to be honest I didn't notice any differences from the DC. Still awesome tho.

I always watch the extended Lord of the Rings.
You mean the only cannon lotr trilogy?
@9:09 I laughed so hard at this interaction because it is so true.
Bought the Matrix trilogy on blu-ray from Bestbuy. Tell a friend because I thought it was a great deal. He says he got it off Amazon for 15 bucks less. Eyes glowed red, shouted "you sum'beech why didnt you tell me". LOL.
Best Buy does pricematching.
I've been looking for the Kingdom of Heaven director's cut for years, but in my third world country the only way to get it it's through the US, which would be as expensive as a kidney, I think that a lot of the streaming services should get a hand in distributing this cuts so a lot of people can watch the best version.
there's a free version of it on RUclips :)
Says they'll cover all, missed Donnie Darko.
The directors cut is worse then the theatrical cut though.
I've never watched the non-extended versions of the Lord of The Rings trilogy
Pretty good if you have a century off work to watch in one go.
saint nic cage
Another few decades for the appendices.
There is one improvement the shorter version has over the extended. In Return of the King when Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli were charging across the battlefield while the ghosts are clearing out everything, the Fellowship theme is playing, where in the extended it is the regular battle theme for Return of the King
Extended is easier to understand
Didn't realize there was one! Gotta check that out.
There's an extended cut?

IIRC the Director's Cut of Dark City is pretty good and different
haha, I just posted about this, not knowing this comment existed already. Yes, it's better because it does away with the hand-holding opening voice over narration.

Brazil is a great movie, try to find the best cut and make sure you’re in a patient mood, it’s wprth the time and if you saw it years ago another chance
It's okay, but I think it's a bit overrated as there are many better Terry Gilliam movies (i.e. everything else up to 12 Monkeys).

The Mortal Kombat 11 extended cut is awesome, you should play that! They really beefed up Scorpios iconic "Go Over There" catchphrase!
I would LOVE to see the director's cut of Sucker Punch on a Caravan sometime.
Payback - Straight Up: The Director's Cut one that no one mentions a lot, is right up there with Kingdom of Heaven Directors Cut for me.
That's like the one bad directors cut. The ending is way worse, I like the blue filter and the events of the movie work much better with the humorous narration, rather then being self serious and bleak.
I love this channel and the podcast! Love the banter between you guys it makes my day.
ST: The Motion Picture has a shorter "Director's Cut" because, around 2002, Paramount allowed Robert Weis to finish editing it.
But somehow the director's cut still has the same awful slow pacing all the way through.
Also, I hope they eventually release an extended cut of Revenge of the Sith because the original cut before the theatrical cut was like four and a half hours long
Halloween producers cut adds the backstory of why Michael is the way he is, which is cool but definitely went a weird direction.
You guys definitely watched the "happy" version of Brazil.
Maso, watch Mid90’s, Uncut Gems, Good Time & Lighthouse. All A24. All bangers.
The extended version of bvs made me like it more. The first scene of the movie where it gives more context makes you be able to follow the movie better. I like it but it is kind of hard to watch because it is slow
That's Batman vs Superman, you meant?
I will agree the extended version is way better than the theatrical cut, but it’s still a lame movie. I just remember leaving the theatre thinking “what the fuck...”
It's worse IMO, it's just more of the movie that I already hated
The home release version of Clue with all of the alternate endings stitched together is technically an extended cut and greatly improves the final act (acts?). I think that's one of the reasons it's regarded as a cult classic today.
Is the Logan Noir version a sort of director’s cut? Because it looks more artsy for some reason
because its black & white lol. Its the exact same movie. Mangold got to make the movie he always wanted to make so there was no need for an extended DC.
Big Blue. The Director’s Cut includes a fairly important mermaid subplot and the theatrical version makes zero mention of it.
Woof. Three years on, what are your thoughts now?

I actually enjoyed Sucker Punch for what it was. I had really low expectations, maybe that's why, but it was smarter than i thought it would be.
Too bad we will never see Iron Man 2's director's cut
The Hobbit trilogy extended cuts caravan of garbage, make it happen
WATCH SUCKER PUNCH! I only saw it at the movies and I actually enjoyed it!
The director's cut of Amadeus is long but significantly better. I watched the director's cut first without knowing it and then bought the DVD which was only the theatrical cut and thought I was losing my mind that scenes I remember were missing.
This is as almost high quality as all of your extended audio additions, even though it's the reverse.
