I'm working on an inventory now, because I love these videos! Thank you for all the details. When I started buying makeup, it was that 2014 boom for the industry in the midst of watching my mom battle cancer. I used makeup as a way to give me that rush of excitement and happiness, even if only for a moment, and I kept buying as a coping mechanism through my grief when she passed. Eventually, after surpassing 500 lip products and closing in on 300 eyeshadow palettes, not to mention the base products I had in abundance that I never cared for, I realized what I was doing. I don't regret it, because it helped me at the time and I now have a handle on the buying. It helped keep me happy and brought me some glimmer of light at a dark time, and now I'm decluttering. Was it a waste of money? Absolutely. I kick myself a bit thinking of how much I could have invested, but what's done is done and now I see my numbers coming together and a lot of my categories finally feel right *for me*. I have 2 foundations, 2 primers (I use for mixing because I don't like full coverage), 1 concealer, 2 mascaras, somewhere around 20 pencils of various types (lip, eye, chubby, etc.). I still have a lot of lip stuff (well over 100), too much blush and bronzer (although each is less than 20 now), and more than 3 lifetimes of highlighter and eyeshadow (my Achilles heel, for sure, at almost 50 highlighters and somewhere around 2000 pans of eyeshadow across over 100 palettes). But it is way lower and I'm happy to work my way through things, declutter when I feel inclined, and just enjoy what I have. I still want my eyeshadow lower, but I have one palette on its way out and I will have more out next year with my pan that palette projects. I can't wait to post my own numbers for this year! I need to finalize my spreadsheet and my sums. 😂
Like you, I also count individual pans. Besides makeup I also count nail polish, perfume and samples as their own categories. I started the year with 199 products. Currently I have 219 products, so I've gone up by 20. So far I've used up 24 products, but I think I can use up 4 or 5 more before the end of the year. One reason I went up is because I quit my job in healthcare, so for the first time in over 5 years I am allowed to wear nail polish and perfume. So I bought a pack of 6 perfume samples as well as 16 nail polishes. I've also bought replacements for some of the makeup I've used up. Overall I'm happy with my collection, but I want to downsize a few categories, namely eyeshadows and lipsticks. I don't try to finish eyeshadows because they take forever. It took me over 40 uses to hit pan on a cream shadow that I used to set my eye primer. Instead, I will rotate all my eyeshadows so I always have 4 different palettes to work on at a time. Once I use a palette 10 times I change it out for a new one. By doing this I've managed to use all my 12 palettes at least 20 times this year. Some I've used 30 or 40 times, and one I've used over 100 times. So even though I only have 6 eyeshadow pans in my collection, I can happily say that I'm not neglecting any of my palettes.
Jessica, I'm so glad to watch your make up inventory! I have 40 palletes (284 eyeshadows). In the beginning of the year pan percentage was 2,8%, my goal in the end of year to have 5%. I will not finish any, but planning just to increase numbers of pan. I have 7 blushes (13-15 years of usage), 65 nail polishes, 68 lip products.. I am shocked by your "eyes and lips results"! It's amazing. 👏
Wowza! You've really stuck to your guns and are working through products! I'm impressed! Love seeing the pan % go up. Mine is still at like 0.2%. 😅 It's dropped from where I started at the start of the year, mostly because I caved and bought new products, but also because I binned a couple of products that were old and had pan in them that turned. Not mad though. 😄 Can't wait to see what you do in the next 12 months.
I only finished 4 eyehsadows so far this year. Hope to get out two more till december, but 12 is so good. Congrats. And it really shows how hard you have been working on your inventory over the years.
You progress this year is so good jess! 42 palettes, 122 single pans of eyeshadow. I completed no pan left behind on them all and trying to do 5x used for all my singles which feels crazy as this point but going to push for it as I have 30 left or something like that. Eyeshadow is my biggest category followed by blush. My lowest are concealer and lip liner with two. At this point in the game I am just pushing to try and hit my super challenging goals like hitting pan in both blushes in my face palette quad, hit pan or get close in another bronzer and/or blush and finish a foundation which will make two, its been a good year panning wise.
I count my total inventory with number of palettes vs individual eyeshadows since that can be overwhelming and I’m at 85 now, hoping to get down to 50. The palettes included in that number equate to 104 eyeshadows which honestly still feels like way too much since I don’t love wearing it so I’m also hoping to eventually get that down to 50-60
