Welcome back, everyone! Today's vlog is the before and after of Benji's surgery. This was a huge operation and so vulnerable of him to share it. He's making amazing progress each day and we're all so proud of him. ❤
We have the most gratitude and appreciation for Southampton Spire Hospital and all the amazing people who cared for Benji during this, so extra thank you to them. We appreciate you watching and look forward to sharing new vlogs and adventures when Benji has recovered soon! 😊

I fell on your youtube channel last night whilst looking for reviews of business class long haul. I am coming back to London then Paris from Melbourne Australia, for an extended family home visit - 2 months, I Hope.
As a newly retired Operating theatre nurse, specialising in open heart surgery for the last 34 years I'd like to 'Thank YOU' for this . I have never been thanked before. All the theatre nurses and allied staff are not seen by the patient and get forgotten in the thank you cards and boxes of chocolates etc.
Your video has at last made me realise (reminded me) how much our work means to each and every person that crosses our days. I was a personal scrub nurse and with my Surgeon / Boss we operated on 6 people with open heart sugery a week, so how many lives we have changed is awe inspiring actually.
So thank you for opening my eyes and heart and making me feel like the newly appointed theatre sister with her dreams of helping people all those years ago. I will follow your exciting journey for as long as you write. God Bless and keep you both healthy and happy. Melbourne Aus.

So so glad Benji's surgery went well and he's making a good recovery! This video brought back some incredibly raw emotions for me, my dad had open heart surgery a few years ago and watching you 'relief cry' after the phone call felt like watching myself!! It's a feeling like no other isn't it. Benji seems to have perked up so quickly, and you have been amazing with helping him too Brogan. So happy for you both xx

I have only just seen this video about Benji’s heart operation. Wow you covered everything so well & Brogan you had me to tears when you got so upset in the car. It’s such a worrying time when people are in hospital having ops & you can’t be there with them & waiting for them to come around so you can actually go & see them. You are both so loving & caring to one another. ❤❤I’m so pleased that all went well for Benji. I watched your wedding cruise & a couple of your other cruises which are so informative well done. ❤❤xx

Then poor Brogan having to keep it together waiting for news. I cried with her when news came through it was all over and you were doing well. I know it is over a year ago but I’m so pleased to see you back to Normal.

I’m sitting here with our 17 year old son who had his open heart surgery on March 28th. A big thank you to Benji for helping to explain the way he feels now that he’s at home! It is helpful to have that insight to maybe know how our son might be feeling as well. Sometimes it’s hard for a 17 year old to put into words how this experience has impacted him. Big hugs to you both!! Being their caretaker isn’t for the faint of heart either!❤

Firstly let me just say I’m so grateful that Benji is doing so well. My husband of 30 years was hospitalized during Covid 2021. He ended up having a stroke. I was home with Covid as well and wasn’t allowed to visit, obviously. Those were a dark 12 days. My best friend saved me by taking care of me best she could from a distance. My oldest son stepped in the parent role making decisions for my husband. Long story short it was a blessing for us both to learn who we can rely on when we can’t rely on each other, and to be grateful for every moment together. We’re both thriving now. He’s 99% recovered with just a small visual loss. Watching you share your journey Brogan was incredible. I cried when you broke down. I understand that feeling of both fear and relief. You also need to accept your positive role in Benji’s recovery. You’re so important to each other. That bond can be a miracle in times of true darkness. Sorry this is so long, what I’m really wanting to say is thank you for sharing pieces of your lives with us. Wishing you many more wonderful adventures together.

I’m so happy Benji’s surgery was a success. I’ve had 8 surgeries myself, and one was an open abdominal surgery, so I understand how hard everything is. The best advice I can give to Benji is to listen to your body. It can do more than you think it can, but if you feel like you can’t, don’t. And try another day.
And cheers to Brogan for all that she does. This is a struggle for both of you, and as always, positive vibes your way. 💚

Those points of feeling so on edge and terrified and yet having to show strength and keep it together for the person you love most, and then the immense feeling of relief when all of the exhaustion from feeling it all and keeping going really hits - both of those clips really got to me and so perfectly showed how it feels from the perspective of the person left behind waiting. I cried with you and remembered the times when I’ve been that person for my husband when he had 2 big operations too. You are wonderful Brogan and you did and are doing an absolutely amazing job of looking after Benji, for everything, from the practical to the huge emotional support and cheerleader. My 9 year old nephew had open heart surgery in Southampton when he was just 6 months old. The care provided by the surgeons, nurses and support teams are just amazing.
All these years later the main scar has almost entirely faded but the one noticeable one is the chest drain!
Around the same time my dad had a bypass op with full sternoctomy too and even though he was in his 60’s his scar has also faded too. The recovery is tough though but it sounds like Benji has an amazing support network around him and Bonnie to provide some (gentle) cuddles too.
I hope the hospital took Benji’s hair colour in to account with pain meds. People with red hair often need much more anaesthesia than others!
Thanks for the update Brogan. Your relief and outpouring of emotion in the car was totally normal and others that find themselves on a similar journey will benefit from you both being so frank about the whole journey.

Well done Benji. Your experience during and after your operation brought back so many memories for me.
I had open heart surgery a year last November and I was 73 years old then.
At the time, Covid was prevalent, so visitors were not allowed at all.
My dear wife of 50 years had passed away two years earlier, and I felt so scared and alone.
But, like you, I found the medical staff from surgeons down to the tea lady were wonderful.
My op lasted over 7 hours and before I came round, they had to rush me back into theatre for another hour and a half op, because I was bleeding from my sternum.
I recognised all of those tubes coming out of your neck, uncomfortable weren't they? It felt good each day as they removed a tube here and there, 2 from my chest drains, monitor wires from my heart and lastly the tubes out of my neck.
Recovery was painful and the drugs disorientated me.
But I surprised the surgeons by my rapid recovery and they let me go home after 8 days instead of the expected 10 days.
I had to wear that uncomfortable 'stab vest' 24/7 for 8 weeks.
Like you, going and doing a first poo was a big milestone.
What I hadn't reckoned on was that within one hour of coming round after my op, they got me out of bed to sit in an armchair to drink a cup of tea. Such a struggle, but that tea was like nectar.
Anyway, take it easy and build up slowly. It can take 8 to 10 months to get back to normal fitness.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I may share your vlog with my two sons, who never got to see me in hospital, although I did send them photos.
Enjoy your life and stay positive.

He was doing really good in the days post surgery. Better than most would be. I’m in healthcare so I’ve seen plenty. To be off the heavy meds by day 5 is amazing. I can tell you the best way to put on compression socks was shown to me by a more seasoned nurse. Put them on mostly inside out, leave just enough to slide your foot in and then work them up from there. It helps a lot. Glad to see you are feeling better. Love watching your videos together.

Brogan & Benji! I am so glad Benji is on the mend. Although not on the same level my Fiancé had surgery just a few weeks ago and I really relate to how scary and intimidating that is. You two definitely are a great example of a once in a live love thanks for sharing your story with us. Continued healing to Benji.

Brogan, I’ve watched your videos for years, from meeting Benji to your holidays, to the house moves, to the proposal and now this…. Your love for each other shines so bright. I’m so glad you are able to share real raw footage like this and have the best support.
A friend of mine had open heart surgery last year, it was unexpected but he went through the same recovery process, a year on and he is living life to the max again… works out, runs a business and has a renewed appreciation of life.
I wish you both all the best ❤

I just found your channel recently with the P&O cruises. Bravo to you both! As a cardiac nurse for 20+ years what yall went through is so hard and traumatic. What’s beautiful to see is how you leaned into one another and not away. Bless your new marriage and bless you both with continued good health. Very brave and I’m sure helpful to others to share this ❤

I have been in Benji's position, having the surgery and seeing you cry made me lose it, just thinking of my loved ones in your position, Brogan, all I wanted to do was give you the biggest hug.
Benji going forward if you sleep on your side normally when you are comfortable I rightly recommend sqishmellow type pillows to keep your chest open when you sleep I use one now and my god it helps hugely even 7 years post-op, just giving yourself that extra support for your scar tissue is a big help, but it took me ages to find one I like, and for travel, I have a Disney cuddlez ones which fit lovely in my chest! Send you all my positive thoughts for a speedy recover and I hope your scare isn't too itchy!

❤ this video had me in tears, the moment you broke down in the car, just got me. I know the feelings you've experienced due to my husband's own journey and actually the relief is the hardest bit. When someone is ill, you know what to do, meds, hospital, doctors ect but once it's all done, coming home, for us personally, was the hardest bit. It's like tada, you're fixed, goodbye! Now go be normal! 👍
Wish you a speedy recovery Benji 💟
Big love and light to you both!
