- The rise of on-demand streaming services is a major reason why local video-rental stores like Blockbuster have gone out of business. But there is one rental chain that is staying afloat. In this week’s Sunday Spotlight, NBC’s Kevin Tibbles reports on the company pulling off a business miracle with 750 brick-and-mortar video stores across the U.S. and Canada.

This Video-Rental Chain Has Found Tthe Right Formula To Thrive In The On-Demand Era | Sunday TODAY
'Get an A in school, get a free movie' awwwwww.
Okay, they *deserve* to be in business.
Nostalgia alone would make the business thrive and ban websites showing videos
Getting an A is racist now
The local video rental store in my hometown use to do that too. Wasn't just movies but also video game rentals. Those were Good times
Judging by the title, they didn’t get free videos. Hahahaha
I remember when Chuck E Cheese did that, your grades got you tokens when I was a kid.
Glad to see a company surviving the Amazon/Netflicks era if more companies invested in their employees well being and OWNED their own land and paid there debts perhaps store chains would have survived 🤔
And also have 4K physical disks because streaming them is of poorer quality.
SurferJoe71 *Netflix
Invest in their employees? They don't give a CRAP about their employees, unless they behave like Stepford Wives
@@jalgernonhawthorne410 I think most chains are like that and I hate it myself. Let me ask you though, are you saying that based on this video clip or are you saying it from experience with the company? Because if it is the latter I'd like to hear more about why you say that.
@@RemmySkye Family Video is owned by Highland Ventures. Look them up-- they own a bizarre array of companies, including a pizza chain and an ice-delivery service; they also own the surrounding property of said businesses. They expect the employees of the stores to maintain the buildings AND the properties... Pretty sure "customer service" does not include "property maintenance" or "electrical work"... So, yeah, Keith Hoogland is a monster. Does that clear it up?😁
Sometimes Netflix don’t have all the movies just full of boring Indy movies and crappy movies
The truth
I always found Netflix movie selection to be garbage. They lack in 80s and 90s movies big time.
I just heard the news about family video closing its doors. I am thankful for the memories of both being a consumer and a former employee. I want to say thank you for the great memories. Me and everyone else is going to miss you.
RIP Family Video. I always liked it the best when I was a kid, since the store clerks were way friendlier than at Blockbuster or Hollywood Video. Gonna miss it.
Got to love Family Video :)
Same
I deeply miss my video stores.
where i am movies i can get them for only dollar ea old and new and box sets for only ea and vhs tapes cents ea i have stock piles of movies i buy about 500 to 800 movies a week i have 4 full rooms movies and working on a 5th and 6th room
i will not fall for online movies no way i like to own my movies , life is great ..i knew it was going to happen and got into action long ago i started in the 80s right when dvds started and did hold on to my vhs tapes
The way for them to be viable is through 4K because the quality is worse with streaming.
OMG! Why am I am crying? This is amazing!
PHOENIX MINISTRY cause there is something wrong with you.
Dave Stock do u not miss movie stores
Other suggestions i've discovered that some business' have done to survive.
1. In my city an Indie record store & an Indie video rental store moved in together to share rent & cater to customers who want to buy music & rent movies.
2. Another Indie record store has a 2nd floor & half of it was converted for a rehearsal space for local bands at night who pay a fee per night. Neighboring stores are closed at night so nobody complains about the noise.
3. Another Indie video store has events where they charge a fee for use of their space after hours for... "Film Fan groups", "Book Club meetings", "Indie Filmmaker screenings", "Art exhibits", "Film & TV productions, etc.
4. Indie record stores who are also a Record Label, Distribution for other record labels, CD & vinyl manufacturing plant, music management, ticket seller (club shows)
I really hope Family Video comes to Arizona soon. I would love to have a physical video rental store where i live.
nWoreviewer same here man
I want some here in CT
Its more important now with more streaming choices getting content divided while charging higher prices.
dave Speaking of streaming, doing it with 4K is terrible compared with the physical disk.
I agree, especially with Netflix and Amazon going full SJW.
I'm just watching this video now for the first time in 2021. It warmed my heart because I knew and loved the local video stores. I even had the pleasure of working at a mom and pop shop for a few years before the corporate conglomerate BlockBuster shut us down. I was saddened to see that this store is permanently closed now. The newer generations will never understand why we loved these places.
The video's description labels Blockbuster a "local" video rental store. . .😂
Owning the building is a big advantage.
The reason that the last Texas Blockbuster stores closed was because they couldn't pay for the buildings.
Thankfully,we have FamilyVideo to carry on these iconic stores.
I have almost the exact same profile picture lol.
Just the rest of my name underneath the “BLOCKBUSTER” logo.
I used to LOVE coming here as a kid! They had a much better selection than Blockbuster, and they were cheaper than Hollywood Video!
StarWarsTrains Ikr!
Yeah I only went to blockbuster once with my grandma when I was really little and I don’t know if it was just my store but the store seemed small and compact but maybe I was just tired idk
The owner is a legend, hope this chain continues to thrive
They didn't
Wish it did. Eventually, the times caught up to Family Video, as well.
@@pomerlain8924 they would have continued to thrive till the pandemic finished it off
Theres like 5 family videos I know of in my area and they have been there since I was little. I remember seeing the blockbusters and Hollywood videos disappear but family video stayed. I always went to rent video games. I still do sometimes.
Family video is smart. They own the building, so the other half they usually rent out to another company. I hate Netflix.
The closest Family Video to me, is about 50 some odd miles away, but you know what? I'm glad that they're there. And where I live, in a rural area, we don't always have the best internet, so Netflix is not always an option. I think, Family Video would do really well in rural areas, I know they have some stores in areas with a large amount of farms, but I mean actual rural areas. I have to go 13 miles to get to the closest Walmart, that doesn't sound like a lot, but keep in mind I live in the United States, Where Walmarts are almost everywhere. The closest town to where I live, only has a Dollar General and a gas station, there are no other stores there. that's a bit closer than the Walmart is, so I could see them doing well, with the family video there. Not to mention, I don't live too terribly far away from Augusta, Georgia, so I would imagine that during the Masters Tournament, they would make a good bit of money. Some people prefer to rent movies the old-fashioned way, I know I do. Well, I would, if there was a video rental store near me.
I miss working there. Was very fun being able to take home movies and watch them "for homework", and then return the next day and be able to recommend customers your favorites and give opinions on various titles. My favorite part was seeing new video game titles come in and and be able to see what's coming out. Too bad though that the store manager at my location was very micromanaging and rude- and one week even decided to give me 2 hours for the whole week, my other coworker 0 hours, and then the new employee 20 something hours. Not to also mention that a coworker there (that worked there a little longer than I did) was very finicky about helping me with stuff and only looked out for herself.
I don't know how family video is as a company, but all I know is that the store I worked as was pretty dysfunctional. Such a shame that I had to leave such a fun job.
I think it would be lit if Netflix started a real brick and mortar video rental store in NY or LA.
Good to see video stores are surviving
same here,i never used redbox, ones.i went to hollywood, blockbuster
If I’m looking for a particular movie, i never find it on netflix or on demand. Streaming services constantly rotate what they have available due to licensing and rights issues. They’ll never have the many options of titles that video stores had. One day you can throw a movie on your watch list, the next day it’s disappeared. That old cult movie that you can only find on vhs because it was never released to a digital format? Forget about it. If you don’t have a copy of the vhs, you don’t have a way to watch the movie. Sure, streaming services allow you to be lazier, if that’s what people want. I personally want more options. There are sooo many movies available, and streaming services tend to cater mostly to current and more modern movies. For those of us who love to browse through movies made before the year 2000, we really miss video stores.
My family video just closed. These video stores are beginning to fold like lawn chairs now during coronavirus.
My bestie daughter works for them on MO. She loves it
One of the four stores in my area just closed, bummed that its gone but the prices I got for the films....unbeatable.
Going to miss my staff at my store, they are sent to a store about 20 miles away.
Jinzo 2400 noooo, why did it have to close?
I go to Family Video often, and I love having the feel of having an actual movie or TV show in my hands and in a bag or two instead of buying them digitally all of the time.
I actually live here and the family video hasn't even been up for 20 years in this town
Great store! I think I am going to try and apply there!
Funny, they are closing stores all over now .
I enjoyed watching this video last year. It made my day as someone just getting into collecting physical media. Now, they’re closed. It sucks because these people seemed to have treated everyone well.
Man this is just sad to watch now… Many fond memories going to my local Family Video with my family, browsing the games/movies and running to go find my mom to show her what I wanted to rent. It’s a tragedy that it’ll never be the same after Covid.
People are just talking about how nice it is to physically go in this store....and few are amazed at the companies policies. This company pays for college for anyone who is a district manager or above.....unbelievable!
Many "Extended Versions" of Films were possibly only accessible on "Pay-Per-View" Satellite TV, and, some limited and edited versions were possibly only available on "Satellite "TV/TS"".
Also, many films were also only available, and also limited films were only available at "Rental Stores".
I wish my home town had a family video please bring one to Mountain City ,TN.
Back when 1 room in the house had a VHS or DVD player, we would all get together and watch a movie. These days with Netflix, Hulu, etc., it causes separation within a family because movie streaming is so accessible on everyone's own electronics rather than in one system that is shared.
When Family Videos closed in January, my Grandma/guardian and I bought a bunch of DVDs at 2 close locations:
At one I got:
1)Elmer Gantry.
2)Forever My Girl. (I meant to get First Reformed, but got the wrong disc.)
3)Shakespeare In Love.
4)To Catch A Thief.
(Admittedly, I still have to watch all of these...)
At the other I got:
1) The King and I.*
2) Super Size Me.* (Although I have a different copy of it now.)
Then there were mystery boxes, Blu-rays, 4ks, etc. One had family movies, 9 for $7. It had:
1)Camp Rock.
2)Furry Vengeance.
3)Night At The Museum.
4)The Odd Life of Timothy Green.
5)The Polar Express.*
6)Ralph Breaks The Internet.
7)RV. (I have a different copy of that now.)*
8)Spiderman: Into The Spider-verse.*
9)The Spider wick Chronicles.
*Watched it. (I have a bad habit of buying movies and waiting a long time to see it, if at all...) :P
I loved this place. Here in Indiana we got them small Family Video. We have a load of games. Switch Games, DS games, Wii games, Wii U games. It's so cool I went every day I loved it! We still go there for movie. I might even work there. It is so cool that we have like 3 in Indiana now.
We still have a "20/20 Video" a couple blocks from my house that is still doing pretty good. I try to go every week to help support them and keep it open!
Family Video luv it here in louisville
FYI: We all still have the Local video rental "store" in our neighborhood and/or city (and it's called the Public Library, all you need is a Library card and you can rent movies for FREE!)
But the selection is tiny! You gotta wait to have your DVD arrive from another library in the area if you want something else. You can't reliably go on a night to get a movie. Strangely enough, the game selection is much stronger.
Last year I was abruptly fired from my job. As a huge movie buff, I've always thought it would be so fun to work at a video store. When I was in high school/college I applied multiple times to ones in my hometown, but was never hired as it wasn't during their busy time (the summer vs the winter). After being fired, I applied at a Family Video nearby and was called in for an interview. However, due to some health problems and a job offer from my friend, I decided to forgo the opportunity, although if/when I suddenly become unemployed I will jump at the chance to apply again!!!
Stefan I tried to get a job at blockbuster back in the early 00's but was never hired. It's a good thing since I pretty much would have been force to switch jobs.
DON'T! It's a terrible place to work.
@@jalgernonhawthorne410 Can you elaborate?
@@Stefan-ji2ek expected to do electrical work and property maintenance in addition to your ACTUAL job? Wanna work a 10-hour shift all by yourself, without a lunch break? Or a bathroom break?... That's just a start-- one store in my area lost their entire crew in a week
I swear the world will end if family video goes out of business👾
The one near me closed down
Anime22 And here they are selling out. Matter of time. Good old days going away in this genre also. All about the money.
I will literally die cause it’s my childhood and the movies are so cheap like 1 dollar for 4 nights I believe
mmgarza1997 Let me know where that is so I won’t go there. Give SOME TYPE of value to your reply.
mmgarza1997 why did it close?
My cousins in Columbus are so lucky right now while im sitting here with only redboxes in California.
Westley West yea I guess the President just likes the south more
This is awesome. I want that in Europe please.
Are all these built the same, because mine looks EXACTLY like it, layout and everything!
Beautiful chain that I will always dearly miss in my community.
Love this!
I miss video rental stores.
Video Rental Stores=family
Netflix/Hulu plus/amazon=money
excellent ! going against the tides, truly a very American story indeed.
watching in at the end of 2020, I hope these guys are still going.
Sadly no
@@Danbo22987 what happened?
@@KnowledgeVariable they went bankrupt about 3 months ago, shuttering all locations.
I need one that has the movies all on tape lol
Long Live Family Video and the last Blockbuster.
This is wonderful!
I go to these and it's so cool to go in and look at the movies.
We want a family video in California, specifically in L.A. county, in the San Gabriel valley area, to be exact.
I have a family video near my house I'm going to have to visit there soon.
We have one here in TX Grand Prairie just 2 blocks away from us
It's nice to see someone notice that family time has been distant. With Netflix or digital movies, it's multiple accounts usually putting everyone in their own rooms watching their own movies and at whenever times. Nobody was together.
This is great, I hope they're still thriving.
Glad we still have a few family videos here in Louisville
I think all the family videos in Illinois went out of business☹
It’s so cool living right down the street from one
Rest In Peace Fam vid
If only blockbuster had bought Netflix in 2000 and adapted quickly to the changes in movie rentals, they could have survived and still could have had thousands of stores still open.
Used to have a family video in my town they closed ten years ago.
From reading the comments I guess they're closed now. I wish it could've worked out. Even with the convenience of streaming, I still miss going to rent a movie. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but it was such a huge part of my childhood. There was nothing like holding the physical copy and reading the back of it and discovering hidden gems. Especially in the horror section. Lol.
Thats strange I was at my chiropractor the other day and ask her the same thing about if she rented or owned where she practiced.....She said she rents because it was cheaper than owning...Said owning she would have pay the property taxes and insurance............But since she rents she dont have pay that plus said she gets to a tax deduction for paying rent....
Love that door ding
Wish dvd rental stores would return lots of people miss this going into a store and rent DVDs for the weekend Someone pleased bring it back to the Uk 🇬🇧 Swansea
When i lived in Kewanee, Il. I used to go to Family Video all the time. We didn't have a blockbuster.
Blockbuster needs to learn from them. What's that Blockbuster is 20 feet in the dirt. Ah, so sad.
I wish they had locations in Georgia and Florida.
A lot of them are closing now but me and my family still take advantage of it and we go every five days 🥰
Always next to a papa murphys too lol
DueMagician921 thats who owns them.. Thats y here i always question y its papa murphys instead of marco even tho we have marcos everywhere
We’ll always remember you! :(
Love family video been going there for 13 years
I wish we had a family video near by. I miss video shops myself.
Glad they can still do fairly well, but the digital age will eat them up in the near future unless a little luck can find them and keep this remaining Gem alive! I miss the 80's and 90's and given the chance, I honestly would toss my Smart Phone and Laptop for a Pay Phone and a Home Computer with 80 lb Monitor just to go back to the past again :( Gone are the more innocent and free times we had back then.
Lol be careful what you say, it might just sneak up on you.
1. That cutie in the purple dress
2. I wonder if we could bring back VHS
Please come to Georgia!
1:38. I've seen that before
I wish there were family videos here in Louisiana
i had one near me but it sadly closed a few years ago ;-;
we usually got games from it
i have two of these stores near my house. every time i go by one its a ghost town
its sad,see a ghost town
There is a Family Video in my town.
Same like 2
I work at Family Video. Honestly the best job I’ve had in a while
I still use are family video every weekend
There’s a family video that’s 15 minutes away from me I need to check it out soon. I’ve only been to blockbuster and Hollywood video back in the day 😂😂😂😂
“Tthe” lol
I been onces family video store only brought Grandma's boy dvd and good stuff
closest one is 5 hours away over the border.
Believe it or not, there are still mom and pop video stores around. They are few and far between, but they seem to cater to VHS aficionados.
Work 5 years as district manager for college scholarship
Blockbuster could have still had 3000 stores in USA right now if they had adapted quickly and made better choices like family video.
i think there needs to be family video locations up here in washington , as well as oregon and idaho
i would Love to have a video store to walk into here in shoreline that was Near restraunts like papa murphys, little ceasars, dominos, pizza hut, mcdonalds, burger king, ivar's, etc
and that locations up here were More of a Bookstore Format store Similar to scarecrow video, Where you could have free events for fun
We miss you too Family Video.
I wish we still had a dvd rental shop here in Scotland. Online streaming has taken over. Can't believe netflix is still on the go it's absolute trash.
I go to family video and it’s a great experience cause you can get popcorn and a movie to watch by yourself or with your family it’s my childhood store and will hopefully still be around in the future
He he he. Tibbles.
Why is it so funny? The world may never know.
I wish I could've gotten the opportunity to get those benefits, but I only got to work for 8 months before they shut down 😔
The one near us closed oooof
And their still open today. Its insane
