- This is my fourth discussion with Richard Rohlin, philologist and co-host of the Amon Sûl podcast. We continue our exploration of universal history, picking up where we left off last episode with the special symbolic significance of Ethiopia ( • Universal History: the... ).
In this episode we address some responses we’ve received on the universal history series. We discuss the Apocalypse of Pseudo-Methodius more in depth, the role of Ethiopia in medieval history, the magic gates of Alexander the Great and Alexander’s connection to Ethiopia and the apocalypse, hybridity and we also hint at the symbolism of the US, in particular the Lincoln Memorial.

What does one need to do, or what is the process for becoming an Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Christian?
I have long felt a conviction to both become as Orthodox & as Torah-Observant a Christian as I can manage, particularly inviting the sacraments & liturgy back into my spiritual life that was once so vibrant & central to the life of my ancestors.

1st you become catechumen and you will learn about the dogma and all , because you have to believe not only in your heart but also by your head
Then there will be baptism , anointment ,holy communion ....and all , this is the highlight
But really just go to nearby Church they will be more than happy to guide you

There is a book in Ethiopia 🇪🇹 , the book of Alexander called the news of Alexander the Great, it is found in a big monastery and written in Ge’ez and it’s not translated up to now, it talks about Gog-Magog in detail and it also tell about different planets like multiverses in detail and different creatures rather than angles and demons in detail which is so difficult even to understand it till this time. It’s kinda funny to me when the NASA brag about the 🛸 and 👽 this days 😂

These videos are great. I am excited for them to get to Britain, Arthur, and the symbolism/importance of the modern royal family.
Someone who was a saint in my own life was taken up to heaven at a young age and I really did feel that it was a “judgment on the world”, like the world failed to live up to the gift of having him here. He was a drunk, but he was also a celibate, a lover, a wise man, known by others as a “Mad Jester King”, he chose to live in destitution and homelessness for many years, a brilliant musician, a poet. He was incredibly kind others living in the street and taught them how to maintain dignity even in tough circumstances. He especially protected women and children who found themselves to be homeless. When I found out he died, it also felt like reality fell apart for me personally, for how could it exist without him? When I first found out that he passed on, I would speak to him nightly. When I ask him why I cannot move past the grief, he says so that I am able to remember what “deep love” is. Now, I no longer speak with him, but I started praying to God instead. So my friend brought me to God through his death. How could someone who brings others to God not be a saint?

the history of the Philippines also has this parallel. During the same year of the protestant reformation in the west in 1521, the light of Christ first shone here through the Spanish missionaries and it unified scattered islands into a whole country

I did some research on the Huns for my thesis at St Vlad's. (The Council of Chalcedon occurred during the era of Attila, and the threat he presented to Constantinople was a major motivating factor in trying to settle the doctrinal dispute fomented by Eutyches.) The Huns controlled territory ranging from the North Sea to the Caspian Sea, but it was a loosely organized confederation of various ethnic groups, including a lot of Germans. Gothic was the lingua franca of the Hun's empire.
If you want to learn more about the Huns, the book to read is The World of the Huns, by Otto J. Maenchen-Helfen.

Intersectionality is actually the complex joining of many that is seen as one. We're all HUMAN and if we go beyond being confused about that fundamental knowing then we can create synthesis. We're all human and therefore ONE. If you're confused about that then you're making a choice to be separate.
What is the best way for a Russian Orthodox American to learn more and discover more about the church traditions in Ethiopia? I would love to visit the country and learn more in depth, but I do not know where to begin. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Abram Petrovich Hannibal Gannibal A. P. (1696-1781)
Sòld into Turkish slàvery, Abram Petrovich Hannibal was brought as a Black servant to Czar Peter I, known as Peter the Great. He became one of the royal favorites, a general-in-chief, and one of the best-educated men in Russia 🇷🇺 in his era. His great-grandson was Alexander Pushkin, the famous Russian writer who later glorified the deeds of his Black ancestor in his book, The Negro of Peter the Great.
Hannibal was born on an unknown date around 1696 in the principality of Logon in present-day Cameroon. 🇨🇲 Abducted by a rivàl ethnic group, Hannibal was sòld to Turkish slave traders who brought him to Constantinople in 1703. As an eight-year-old boy he was brought to the court of Peter the Great who adopted him immediately. Being the Czar's godson, Hannibal assumed his name, Petrovich, and became his valet on Peter's various military campaigns and journeys. When the Czar visited France 🇫🇷 in 1716, Hannibal was left behind in Paris to study engineering and mathematics at a military school. Two years later, he joined the French army and fought in the war against Spain. In January 1723, Hannibal finally returned to Russia 🇷🇺
To Hannibal's misery, his protector, Peter the Great, dièd in 1725, leaving the young Black artillery lieutenant dependent upon the royal advisor Prince Menshikov, who, due to his dislike of Hannibal, assigned him first to Siberia and later to the Chinese border where his task was to measure the Great Wall.
Hannibal’s fortunes changed in 1741 when Empress Elisabeth took the throne and Hannibal was allowed to officially return from his exile although in fact, he had done so clandestinely in 1731. Five years after his illegal return, he married his second wife Christina Regina von Schöberg, the daughter of a Swedish army captain, who bore him eleven children. One of his sons, Osip, was the grandfather of the poet Alexander Pushkin.
Although it had been Hannibal's wish to retire, Empress Elisabeth did not want to abandon him or his engineering skills. He was made military commander of the city of Reval, serving between 1743 and 1751 and by 1760 had been promoted to the rank of a full general. During his military career, he oversaw various projects including part of the expansion of the 73 miles Ladoga Canal near St. Petersburg which linked the Neva and Svir Rivers and Russian fortresses throughout the empire. Abram Petrovich Hannibal died on April 20, 1781, as one of the leading military figures in his country and probably the first outstanding engineer in Russian history.

I've being studying the "rabbit hole" that is Gog and Magog some interesting references:
-"Josephus refers to Magog son of Japheth as progenitor of Scythians, or peoples north of the Black Sea. According to him, the Greeks called Scythia " Magogia " (Ant., bk. I, 6)."
-"Johannes Magnus (1488-1544) stated that Magog migrated to Scandinavia (via Finland) 88 years after the flood, and that his five sons were Suenno (ancestor of the Swedes), Gethar (or Gog, ancestor of the Goths), Ubbo (who later ruled the Swedes and built Old Uppsala), Thor, and German. Magnus' accounts became accepted at the Swedish court for a long time, and even caused the dynastic numerals of the Swedish monarchs to be renumbered accordingly. Queen Christina of Sweden reckoned herself as number 249 in a list of kings going back to Magog. Magnus also influenced several later historians such as Daniel Juslenius (1676-1752), who derived the roots of the Finns from Magog."

The discussion around 26:00 regarding the different sons of Noah and the necessity of a European-Semitic alliance against Arabia - could it be part of the reason for America's current relationship with Israel?
Here is what I understood so far:
6:20 „Universal History“ as a theology of history: Every nation is at the periphery by default, before it encounters Christianity.
12:53 Giants, or: how the rift in the human line occurred in the first place: Demonic forces at play. Exploring why there’s a historical rift that needs historical healing to begin with (- from the theological standpoint of this Byzantine „Apocalypse of Pseudo-Methodius“ from the 7th(?) century, that is dealing with the inside threats (schism) and outside threats (barbarians at the gates), by viewing it through a teleological lens, which means, that there is a theological fate of nations that needs to play out in history.
Exploring the concepts:
42:04 freely joining in unity without annulling the multiplicity (UK); in contrast: fusion leads to confusion (Baphomet)
46:52 Holy shit (Lincoln (re)establisher and guarantor of unity)
49:38 more holy shit (schism vs Ethiopia symbolically and in person uniting Macedonians and Romans; well: „mastery“ sounds more like“ superseding“ to me…)
55:51 Ethiopia rectifying the problem of Cain (by story wise bringing together again the human seed lines of the different people so they can be considered saved hereditary or even genetically/ biologically); similarly as Pentecost rectifying the problem of the Tower of Babel (by bringing together the languages of the people thus ending the confusion between the nations)
59:01 Next chapter: How can the all-encompassing fall? Well: In a way it can, but also in a way it can’t… (I assume the actual / temporal church vs the true / ideal / eternal church, which is the endpoint?)
1:00:56 We can embrace the enculturation of Christendom in all nations and feel good about where everybody came from, but ultimately the rise and fall of nations doesn’t matter, until we reach the end-times / the Eschaton.

Intuition and Causation
It just occured to me that if the mountain is the center from which all things ripple down then 'the Field' where Cain killed Abel and Esau liked to dwell that must be the same as the fringe, am I correct in my understanding of that?
The story about the last Roman King sounds much like the story of the Great Monarch of France
In regards to the "sneak peek" you gave us of the upcoming episode on the US, I read an interesting observation someone made: America has often been compared to Rome, symbolically mirroring if not outright repeating events that occurred in Rome. There was an ever-present and occasionally violent conflict in Rome between West and East until the West fell and the East emerged as Byzantine Empire. America has had an ever-present conflict between North and South that at least once has erupted into violence.
Therefore, if the US continues down its symbolic path, then Dixieland will become the American Byzantium.
I'm not saying that this is an accurate interpretation of the symbolism, just that it's an interesting idea.

The North/South split doesn't exist today, but there is a clear split between urban and rural/suburban. You'll find rural washington, new mexico, ohio, jersey, and texas are all very similar. As are chicago, houston, nyc, seattle, LA, etc.

@@JovialApps there's at least one notable expetion where the North/South split still applies: religion. The South is known as the "Bible Belt" for a reason. Sixty percent or more of the population of each Southern state identifies as extremely religious (with the exception of Florida, but even it has a small majority that identifies as extremely religious). Most Southern Chrisitians are also members of the same denomination, the Southern Baptist Convention. Look up a map of the US by denomiation to get an idea of how strong a grip the SBC has on the South. If the assertation that US is symbolically mirroring Rome is accurate, the SBC may very well mirror the Orthodox Church.

Hungarians are on a similar position. Some people relate them to the Huns, some to other ethnicities, but the fact is they also came from the East, had a nomadic culture, and were in constant contact and intermingling with other peoples (9% of Hungarian words come from Turkic languages). Two centuries after they settled on the Carpathian Basin and became Christian, around 80% of the Hungarian population was genocided by the Mongols. After that, the Hungarian king invited other peoples to settle in Hungary, most of them Slavs and Germans. By the way, the name Attila is quite common in Hungary nowadays.
I have Hungarian ancestry. As a result, I know, and had it repeated to me numerous times, that they are not descended from the Huns. That’s a misconception due to the similarity of the names. They are Magyar.

You spoke of the limits and extremity. Well Africa and Ireland did trade between themselves, and we even have early christian african manuscripts in Ireland. Both of them did a lot of illuminated manuscripts of the Bible at about the same time. From a more "evident" point of view, there was a LOT of monks VERY early on in Ireland, and these ideas came from North Africa and the Middle-East. Both of them have monastery in the middle of chaos (desert in one case, sea in the other; for this see Skellig Michael) and their monastic stories are compared a lot (on that, see "Hermits, Saints, and Snakes: The Archeology of the arly Ethiopian Monastery in a Wider Context"). I remember a monk that went from Africa to Ireland or the other way around, but I can't seem to find it now. I do know some went to Constantinople for books and learning before coming back to Ireland.
