@@AdamTheAd-vanc3d Wherever Rupert went, the SD boys invariably followed, certainly early on anyway. Not that they didn't have their own sound and weren't amongst the best. Rupert Parkes definitely engineered their very early tunes. At least the first EP on Certificate 18, possibly all 3. The first tune on Odysee has been said to be a collaboration between them as well but I'm not certain if that's true or not. I've heard conflicting stories over the years. It's definitely Photek.

Photek is just great. This tune is the essence of the club night Speed from 94-96 at the Mars Bar in Soho, London - run by Bukem and Fabio it was a melting pot of pure dnb experimentation and HIGH quality tuneage. Bring back that era I reckon!

So Photek was responsible for turning everything around. For someone who wasn't a drummer, his rhythmic sensibilities were off the chart. Choices for samples were excellent and innovative limitations with sampling made it more challenging back then. He was also prolific which really helped the scene by flooding it with this new sound. Funk and jazz samples with the basic loop staples (Bobby, Amen, JB's, Lyn Collins etc) were the soundation but he had the ability to make his patterns sound Clipped and almost photographic sounding, like the shutter of an exposure mechanism. Photek knew who and what he was, a naturally talented and hard working underground Soldier who completely overturned the process of making beats. Without him and others in that area, there would be no what is called 'liquid' today. This style came out of the Aylesbury/Luton/London and St. Albans are. Really interesting as if you look on the map, they are all within reasonable proximity. Those who were waiting for D&B knew it was something special. Its has, as all things do in the creators universe, morphed into other genres which of course is by design. It is a wonder to behold, but also a testament to the UK's undying love for creating music with 'Culture' as part of the alchemy of musical ideas. We were lucky to grow up together with Irish, Carribean, Polish, Asian, Pakistan all struggling to get a voice, whether it be through music or just trying to get by socially. All it takes is one idea.........then the blue touchpaper is lit and everyone can have a go ! Thank you Rupert, you are a one off my brother, you made it good !
