In 1974 I used my department issued Colt DS in a gunfight w/three men who had robbed a state liquor store. It was the older version w/the unshrouded ejector rod and it did its job just fine.
Clearly the Colt is bigger than the Chief Special. I guess the Colt would win in a fist fight if he fought the little Chief. But I still prefer the little Chief!
Hi Guy, I enjoyed your vs presentation. I open carry a Colt Det Spl bought 1975 often and since the 38 spl is no man stopper i like the 6 shots vs 5. It's pronounced Pach Meyer is a much better grip vs the wood panels on both stock versions, mine has pinky rest, added control for a small sidearm. These two are made like jewels, the actions are so smooth. So you gave some differences on both brands. In my opinion you did a fine job making the video.🔫👍
To be completely honest though, I hate rubber grips and I'm magna grip all the way, but if you had to put rubber grips on either of these guns, the newer smith ones actually look halfway decent on the old gun, and the pachmayr grips with the pinky groove look good on anything. However, I gotta stick with my magnas.
Harley and Guns I am glad to hear that. I love how they look. I do like how the newer rubber grips look on the old Smith though it's not bad. I got my magnas on my 2 Smiths and they look awesome. I have a set of Pachmayr grips like those for my Taurus 605, but I bought magnas for it and never went back, but those Pachmayr grips look great on a lot of guns new and old.
I found in my case that the detective special had a better double action trigger but the chief special had better single action. I guess that's the case with almost all Colts and Smiths though.
Do you see how those specifications you showed must be wrong? The 36 cannot be 6.94" long. If the Colt is 6.75" and the Model 36 is so much smaller, how is it that the model 36 is almost 7" long? The specs are wrong, I say.....
Both of these fine firearms were built in a time when quality trumped quantity, which is not to say that any modern offerings from either manufacturer is junk, rather that the personal handling and quality control simply isn’t what was back when these firearms were hand assembled by humans who can see flaws before they’re sent out, instead of being spit out of a CNC machine, given the once over by a guy or gal at a desk before getting packed in grease, wrapped in plastic and thrown into a box for shipment. To my mind, I’d rather wait a little longer for a firearm that’s been assembled and handled by a 1/2 dozen craftsmen before it’s sent out, rather than to receive one that’s been spit out of a machine to save on labor costs and to meet a timely demand… and then sent back to the manufacturer a time or two to correct issues that should’ve been rectified during the assembly process. You can either have quality or quantity, you can’t have both, so choose wisely.
I really wanted a classic 6 shots Colt DS but ended up with a 5-shot classic Smith Model 60 with a pinned barrel. Hold on to your nickel plated Model 36. They're become very rare now.
eBay will have what you’re looking for, either used or new/old stock that’s been sitting in a box for the last 30-40 years. Most of the people who sell them used don’t care about having a completely original firearm for presentation or to add value as an investment piece that will eventually get liquidated for a profit. The new/old stock is priced to move because it’s not that rare, demand isn’t that high and they’re probably looking to get rid of it to free up space for something else.🤷🏻♂️
@@kennethhill613 They are both well built, quality revolvers. The Colt D frame is a little more beefy and weighs a few more ounces. You also get an extra round with the Colt. You can't go wrong with either one.
@@harleyandguns Yea after a year of carrying Im going back to the Smith..Don't get me wrong I love the Colt to death but..lighter, more concealable, better for what im doing pocket carry I gotta give the edge to the Chief special..its a shame I love the Colt but I think both have their merits..for duty gun give me the Colt for conceal everyday carry..can't beat the Chief.
One could argue that it would be a more fair comparison but the Chief's Special was made for conceal carry in direct response to the popularity of the Detective Special.
I have both of these revolvers in the modern make. The cold cobra and the model 36 classic line both bought in the year 201 I have both of these revolvers in the modern make. The colt cobra and the model 36 classic line both bought in the year 2018. I can honestly say that they're both a great firearms I have not had the privilege to shoot the originals, but eventually I will. Putting these two specific revolvers up against each other in a way it's comparing apples to oranges he's got the cold which has six shots the Smith and Wesson 36 which holds five shots both are rated for plus P. The cobra has a Ficker rubber grip which fits my large hands a lot better the Smith and Wesson 36 has the original wood grips which is small kind a hard for me to grip now that being said for the ergonomic and practical use I am probably going to change out the grip on the 36 with a pachmayr. Everyone can call me doing that blast for me all you want to I don't care it's about me having effective use of a firearm to do what needs to be done. However I will order an original detective special and on the original model 36 just to have in the Pile as collectibles. These are for practical use at this point. Know what I will say is on a personal note the Coco bread is by far easier to fire on double action. The model 36 is better to fire on single action. In my honest opinion though I was firing 130 grain plus P and I was doing a drill from stronger double hand two week double hand strong single hand double action single action, and weak hand double action single action. Doing that drill firing the cold is by far easier to do through the gamut then the Smith and Wesson. It's not to say the Smith and Wesson is not a good revolver it is but for me the colt cobra came out on top for the way I can shoot personally.

Thanks for your service!
How many of the 3 didn't walk away, if you don't mind me asking?
You know these guns are special if their names have the words special and they both uses the special ammo. special baby special.
I like the Colt DS and will own a couple some day. I carry a vintage J frame daily. Usually a ‘63 Chief, but I have choices. Good video.
Thanks sonny. glad you liked. It was my one of my first attempts.
I inherited the first generation. 1930. This is the one I'd go to. Appreciate your fine video🤗
Thanks for watching Wayne.
Love them both!

New S&W rubber grips on a Chief's Special??? Blasphemy...

I put the rubber grips on when I take them to the range. I have the magnas for the Smith and the original wood for the Colt.

Chieff special the best

My bad.
Thank you for sharing
Nice.
Is one a little better in quality, fit and finish over the other? Thanks for the vid.
+kanaloa38 Honestly, no. They are both top notch, high quality revolvers. You can't go wrong with either.

i would go all the way on the Colt, one round more, slightly longer, give me more confidence
I have a vintage Colt Agent, an alloy frame version of the Detective Special. It has a very smooth DA trigger and is more accurate than my Model 36.
very good job. Just subbed.
I have an old nickel plated S&W model 36 but I would much rather have the COLT Detective.

I don't suppose you still have the original wood grips for your Smith and Wesson, do you? If the price were right...
Yes, I have them but they are not for sale. Try ebay. You should be able to pick up a set for $50 or so.

Wouldn’t a better comparison to the Colt be the S&W model 10?

Isn’t the model 10 a K frame?
Whats the grip on the M36?

Makes me fill awesome my firing pin on hammer also. 100 percent. 🔫 👍
Perfect bedside friends
Great guns, but us viewers are watching your guns up side down when you hold them the way you do.
I'll have to work on that. Thanks.
must have Colt Detective which one more round, just weight more than 1.5oz.
Ambas son exelentes empate
The colt detective special COULD NOT handle the +P rounds as stated, mine broke down twice.....s/w made a stronger gun
Colt is overpriced, not any better, just hard to find
+Richard Degen They don't make them anymore. Makes it more collectible. Both great shooters.
yes they are both top notch
Please, young man with the vaguely, virile, voice, these are revolvers not "guns."
Thanks for watching young man with the vaguely, virile profile picture. BTW revolvers are "guns".
Harley ... NO NO NO
Revolvers are a kind of gun.
