    I always wanted to visit Meade. I know the Dalton Gang robbed banks in Cimmaron, Kansas and Woodward, Oklahoma. So they very well could have hid out in Meade.

      Yes you're right. There are no known robberies in Meade which also could make it a good spot to hide. Thank you for watching Chris!

    I stopped the video 6:21 where you were showing the room upstairs. I will probably comment later after I watch all the way through. I stopped it because I wanted to comment now on what I see in that room. It is bringing back a lot of memories. The organ in the corner, when I was four years old my neighbors had one exactly like it and the boy and girl who lived there taught me to play it. My short little legs couldn't reach the pumps so the boy pumped while I played. And that treadle sewing machine....my grandmother had one and sewed my wedding dress on it in 1975. Oh my, the memories. 😍 I just saw the table. My grandmother had one just like that also. She was born in 1889 and married in the 19teens. My grandfather bought all of their furniture for her wedding present. She took very good care of it and still had all of it in factory shape when she passed in 1985.

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  3 года назад

      That does sound like you have some special memories with those items. My grandmother had an organ that she played but it was more modern than this one. I remember her car loved to walk across the keys. The items in this house seemed to come from all over but I was told that they were of the time period. It was a tiny house but fascinating to visit. Thank you for watching and sharing some of your special memories with the sewing machine and organ!

      @RhettyforHistory  3 года назад +4

      Thank you and I appreciate you watching and commenting! Yes Bill Doolin was in the Dalton Gang. As the story goes he was supposed to go to Coffeyville with the gang but had a bad feeling about it. It's been stated that he had a problem with his horse but he could have stated that just to get out of it. He was supposedly very vocal about that Coffeyville trip being a bad idea. Afterwards he formed his own gang known as the Wild Bunch. One of the Daltons who was not in Coffeyville joined the gang. That was Bill Dalton. Those two are the ones that inspired The Eagles album Desperado and more specifically the Doolin Dalton song.

    Hello Rhetty, This looks to be a really cool place to stop and check out! Was the Dalton house near town or out in the country back in their day? Did they dig the tunnel before or after they were outlaws? I also wonder if the law ever came looking for them there. Sorry for all the questions but this place really fires my curiosity. Thanks man!

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  3 года назад

      I'm not entirely sure on those questions. The house now is right in town. I'm sure it was slightly out of town when it was built but it's still walking distance to where Whipple's store would have been. As far as the tunnel no one really knows. If the law knew about it then they probably would have staked it out more. It was pretty secret when the Whipple family was there. Thank you for watching!

    Hey Rhett, nice hideout. Park your horse in the barn. Walk through the tunnel and sit yourself down to dinner. Nice.
    You'd love the Robbers' Roost hideout where Butch Cassidy and the Sun Dance Kid gang hung out along with the Wild Bunch and other outlaws frequented what was known as The Outlaw Trail.

    My question is could they of hid their loot anywhere other than Onion creek in Coffeyville? Where else in the State of Kansas? The $20 grand they stole from the banks do you think someone else found the location??? I just wished that the legend of these guys hidden loot would end soo you'd atleast know where it was or where it went to if someone else dug it up and found it.

      Yes the tunnel was a low lying tunnel that you would have had to crawl through. The entrance would have been a tiny hole in the floor of the closet and not a staircase. I'm sure the hole in the barn would have been much more discreet as well. Thank you for watching!

      Turns out it's an indian spirit box.
