Laser range meters, also known as laser distance measurers or LDMs, offer highly accurate measuring of lengths and heights. Advanced laser range meters, like those made by Hilti, can also accurately measure the distance between any two points within a given range. With a small, compact design, Hilti laser range meters are rugged and durable and are equipped with a sensor automated backlight, inclination sensor for faster indirect measurements, and LED reference indicators. Taking repeated measurements overhead can be achieved ergonomically and fast, saving you time and money.

These look great, and HILTI service is top notch and a great reason to buy if you’re near a distributor, but these look suspiciously like rebranded and slightly redesigned Leica Disto meters with a HILTI price tag. That’s not a bad thing as Disto makes the best I’ve tried by a long shot and the price may be worth it for the accessibility of service centers. That level feature for incline is sweet though, and better than the interface on my Disto equivalent that was just dropped off a roof and wrecked. Thinking…

Hi Mardy - To change the tool from feet to meters on the PD 42: 1) With the tool switched off, press the "On / off" button for approximately 2 seconds to enter menu mode. 2) Press the "Minus" button repeatedly to scroll through the choice of units. 3) Press the "On / off" button briefly to close the menu. The tool is switched off and all the settings shown will be saved. Hope this helps! - Sarah, Hilti North America Social Media Team

If you can point it at something can measure it. So it you’re laying out a building (which can mean a lot of things) you need a physical reference to hit with the laser dot, either an existing object or structure or a reference point you add. They make laser targets just for this. I use one for this all the time and often put a target where need to measure to.

The tools will work in both Metric (centimeters, meters) and Imperial (inches, feet) and it's simple to change them between the two units of measure.
