- TEACHER DEMO. This Jewish folk song is on p. 70 of the Alfred's Adult All In One Course Level 2. It was composed in 1918 and is often sung and danced at Jewish weddings and Bar/Batmitzvah celebrations. Many well-known recording artists have performed this song including: Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Glen Campbell, Neil Diamond, Chubby Checker, and Harry Belafonte.
If you are able to play this song faster, you can do an "accelerando poco a poco" on the repeat until you've reached your top speed on the 4th page. Traditionally, this song starts very slowly and then continues gaining momentum until the end.

Hi Norma,
Its time for me to stop lurking and shout out 'Thank You' for your recordings of the Alfred's Adult books. They are wonderful resource and have been incredibly helpful in my teacher-less piano journey. Your responses to questions and comments are also inspiring.
I started my piano journey as a 60 year old with zero musical history. Here I am 18 months later, half way though book 2, not rushing it and having a wonderful time.
Kind Regards from Australia.
Stephen.
That's awesome Stephen!!! So glad that you are having a wonderful time playing the piano and enjoying your musical journey! You're doing great to be half-way through book 2 at 18 months. Congratulations on your progress, but more importantly I can tell that your are enjoying the process and not rushing it. That's what it's all about. Aloha to you from Hawaii!! --Norma
Thank you very much for recording the Alfred books. I started learning in 2019 at age 51. Being able to watch your normal tempo recording, and PianoMargo's way slowed down recording, has really helped me when my teacher and I are using the books.
Wonderful! So glad that you've been finding them helpful! And congratulations on your progress being here in the Level 2 book! You are reaping the rewards of all of your diligent practice! --Norma
I love listening to you play! This is such a sweet sound to my ears! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
This song is so much fun but goddamn my hands are cramping practicing it
Yes, it's especially easily with this one to tense up and lock up the wrists and forearms. Try to keep a relaxed wrist with a bit of pivot in it, that will keep the blood flowing into the hand and should ease some of the cramping. Slowing the tempo a bit and playing softer if practicing for extended periods of time can help as well. Taking some deep breaths, and even just mentally or verbally telling yourself to relax, and taking a brief break to drop the arms to your sides and shake out the hands can also keep things more loose. So glad that you're having fun with this song!! --Norma
@@92pianokeys40 Thank you Norma! I'll try to relax my wrists, and I'm definitely going too fast. I tend to go too fast when I'm focusing a lot which I need to do with this song.
Perfect tempo for us Alfred students to try to emulate - thanks
You are very welcome! And thank you for the tempo comment! I intended this video as a demo for students and I think that most at this level would be hard pressed to play it much faster unless they have unusual technical facility, and if so, they would probably already be in the next book. :) --Norma
Simply, Wow !! Amazing performance! Thanks for posting this!

Thank you for this video. This song is a monster compared to the previous ones on this book!
+Ronald Piano Videos I completely agree with you. I personally think they should have placed this song towards the end of the book. Most students at this stage do not have the technical skill yet to play those running 6ths at the tempo which is more typical for this song. For this demo, I chose to play it at a more reasonable tempo and not do the customary accelerando since I thought it would be more helpful to students. Glad you found it helpful. NM
@@92pianokeys40 Hey Norma, many thanks for sharing this video! I am quite new to playing piano, and I was wondering what you actually mean with 'running 6ths'. Could you give an example where you played these running 6ths in this video, or refer to one or two measures on the music sheet that contain these runnings 6ths. (I do have the book.) Many thanks in advance.
@@Hung94 "Running 6ths" is just a phrase that I used to describe a group of 6ths moving up or down the keyboard. "6ths" referring to an interval of a 6th such as C to A on the keyboard. They are at the bottom of the 3rd page and on the 4th page in the Right Hand. --Norma
@@92pianokeys40 Do you have any tips for playing the running 6ths for people with small hands like me? I can reach C to A with my 1 and 3 but I don't find them comfortable. My hand starts to hurt a bit after a few measures of playing. Is this just a matter of getting used to?
@@deadpixel08 I would simply play the 6ths with fingers 1 and 5 and move the hand as needed. I completely understand. I used to play 6ths with 1 & 5 all the time. At this stage, It's better to use fingering that your hand is more comfortable and relaxed with rather can causing undue tension in the hand. Eventually, you will gain more flexibility between the fingers which will allow a further reach and greater variety of fingering options even if your hand has finished growing. My hand used to be maxed at an octave, but now I can reach and play a 9th.
I think it is helpful also to ask yourself whether something just feels awkward and difficult or is it painful. Many things at the keyboard will feel challenging at first but with time and practice become more comfortable. But if it is painful, then some things need to be adjusted.
Also, if something is fatiguing for the hand/fingers, etc. then just do a little bit each day or several times a week and gradually you will find your stamina increasing.
Hope that helps, Norma.
A beautiful song to work towards. Just started in book 2, but I'm secretly practicing this song already. I would love to be able to play it!
Awesome! Good for you! --Norma

Bösendorfer! Wow! I had a party here last week. The soloist gave me an encore of this piece on my old Blüthner. It sounded wonderful. Then 2 of the other guests gave a rendering on Clarinet and drums. So I have determined I am going to master this piece.
Wow! A Bluthner. I haven't had the privilege of playing one yet, but I've always heard the 3 B's in the same sentence of Bluthner, Bosendorfer, and Bechstein. I'm sure hearing Hava Nagila live on your instrument was wonderful! Take a look at my tempo notes in the description below the video. If you have the technical skill to play the tempo in the more traditional fashion of starting slower and getting faster and faster to the end that would be great. I kept the tempo slower as a tutorial video. Let me know how it goes, Norma

Since this song is not included in the Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course Level 2 but only in the All-in-One version, in case if I'm interested in playing this song, is there a way to get the piano sheets? I mean, when I click on the link that's in the description, I don't even see where to even print of any of the piano sheets on that website.

Hey Norma :) First of all thanks for all your videos! They have been a great help to me throughout my journey until now. I've worked myself to Hava Nagila and I wanted to ask: why do you consider this piece "Intermediate"? Is it because of it's length/duration?
You're very welcome! So glad that you've been finding the videos helpful in your piano journey. Actually, not so much because it's longer, but because of the technical facility required to move around quickly and accurately with all of those 6ths, and especially if you did an accelerando towards the end. --Norma
I've been listening to this song so many times especially the F minor and A sharp/B flat minor are my favourite keys to hear this song in. I use a RUclips Pitch Shifter Google Chrome extension to change the pitch and/or speed of a particular RUclips video. By the way, this song is not included in my Alfred's Piano Level 2 book because my Alfred's Piano Level 2 book is the Alfred's Basic Adult Piano Course Level 2 book and not the Adult All-in-One Course Level 2 book.
Wow, thanks for letting me know about the Pitch Shifter, that's very interesting. I knew that you could adjust the speed, but I wasn't aware of the ability to change the pitch. --Norma
Waow !! Great !!
Thank you so much! --Norma
@@92pianokeys40 you're welcome !
they are many versions of this song but the pattern is pratically always the same : left hand and right hand at a time if I can say .
my problem is that I cannot play either YOUR version or another one because as soon as I get my left hand with the right one ,all is collapsing !!! I get muddled !!
and yet ,I can play OTHER songs with two hands (like balade for adeline which is more difficult than this one ).
So why don't I manage to get this song with two hands ?
@@lefor.michel348 "Ballade for Adeline" is a lovely piece! I haven't played that one in quite a while. If it's any comfort, this song is usually quite a challenge for students and requires a lot of practice time. When I am working on a song that is difficult for me, I practice a lot hands separate until I am very confident with each hand, then I put it hands together painfully slowly in very small sections. (Such as the Bach Two-Part Invention that I was working on recently.) The key is very slow practice. You have to be very patient with the process. Some songs are just going to be surprisingly more difficult than others. I bump into the same thing. I might sight-read an early-advanced piece and sound quite good the first run through and then have to practice an intermediate piece for a while to sound proficient. It just depends on the patterns. --Norma
@@92pianokeys40 Yes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you have to be VERY PATIENT with the process !!!!
And THAT is the most difficult thing to me (and surely others too ),because I just wanna get the song immediately .
I know we must play each hand alone and then mixing the two together and do it very slowly . But when I did that ,that works, but upon 3 or 4 days ,not immediately .
Is it the same to you or do you get the song immediately (can you play it immediately after having trained the two hand apart and then together ? )
How long does it take to you to play a song you never played ? (and with this method of training the two hands apart and then together ) Please answer ,I wanna know if it's just me or is the process long for everybody ?
And after 3 or 4 days ,that's just incredible how it comes alone !! all the difficulties of the beginning vanish ! incredible process !!
And Yes !!!!!!!!!!! some songs are surprisingly more difficult than others and the opposite is true too !
I am still surprised that with "balade pour adeline" I remember I got it easily with the two hands and for other songs (less difficult ) I didn't get them at all !
what do you think of that ?
@@lefor.michel348 If it is a very difficult piece, I may practice a lot hands separate and then hands together slowly and then more hands separate again as needed. Sometimes I'll practice each hand maybe 10 times separate and then 3 times together, and then do that again the next day. It varies quite a bit depending on the difficulty level of the piece. And of course initially, the tempo is slower when I put it hands together than the tempo I was using hands separate just moments before. Most people have to practice a lot. The piano is a difficult, challenging instrument that requires many, many hours of diligence to produce that look of ease with an advanced piece. But that's partly why it has kept my brain and hands engaged for so many years. It is an endless reservoir of possibilities. --Norma

Why you speed up the Ha va Nagila Part ?
I don't see why ?
Can you explain.
also U Ru U Ru part you kinda slow down the tempo.
This song is traditionally danced to at wedding receptions and it begins with a slow tempo with people dancing slowly and then the tempo speeds up and people dance faster and faster until the end. That would've been a more accurate way for me to record this song, but for piano students at this level it is generally quite difficult for them to play the end that quickly with this particular musical pattern so I chose to keep the tempo more under control and not do an extreme accelerando at the end. The tempo is certainly open to personal interpretation and can be played differently. Norma
I have been playing for about 45 years. I can play music at a Level 10 (Advanced), but I am not a "Virtuoso". I truly enjoy teaching the piano and our goal with this channel was to help piano students along their musical journey. God Bless You too! Norma

What is the name of pianist?
Hi my name is Norma, and I am a piano teacher with 35+ years of playing and teaching experience. My son, Joshua, and I created 92PianoKeys to provide students with an example of what a song could sound like upon completion, which is helpful whether it has been assigned by a piano teacher or if the individual is self-taught. We enjoy a wide variety of music and therefore have included many different styles and genres on our channel. If you are interested in learning to play a particular song, check the description for a link to the sheet music. We've also included the estimated difficulty level in the video title. And yes, our Bosendorfer piano does in fact have 4 more keys than the customary 88. Enjoy the musical journey!
