OP-Z is ridiculously fast [Quarantine]

- Damn I like doing tracks with this one. Teenage Engineering's OP-Z is super fast to lay down ideas, easy to edit and fun to perform with. Again, the new update should provide some nice new synth tones too.
EDIT: Some folks were requesting it on Reddit so I uploaded the trombone sample into op1.fun: op1.fun/users/...
Ps. From Instagram you can also find some tracks and sketches that don't end up on RUclips: instagram.com/whales.have.teeth

Nice vocal chops man!
Great to see your making good use of the quarantine time :)
Cheers! Haha, I'm not sure it's well spent but at least time is passing.
@@whaleshaveteeth Every minute making music is time well spent!
you've got this thing punching miles above its weight, great work!
Thank you very much!
What a fantastic tune! I have to get one! I did a live set in a pub last night with a teenage engineering po33 and rhythm! This machine must be next on my shopping list!
Thanks a lot mate! And yeah, strong recommendation from here.
I see Whales with more OP-Z stuff, I click-through and like :D
Back to where it all started. First love.
2:14 my godness! That groove!

Dminor its my favorite scale :3
I come back to this video maybe once a day while I wait for my op-z to get delivered
Amazing Job! Almost made me cry 'cause I have my op-z sent to repair a month ago...
Cheers, hope you get your Z back asap!
did you get it back yet?
@@UltraStorm yes! They gave me a new one so I lost my samples and my songs, but i’m happy it’s working again
No way you did not just make this on this thing. Fire 🔥🔥🔥🔥
🚒🚒🚒🚒
nicely put together
Cheers mate!
Nice process walkthrough✨✌🏼
Love it man! great fun and awesome sound!
Cheers mate!
I promised myself I wouldn't get a new synth, but this OP-Z is looking hella fine.
One synth never hurts. C'mon I mean it doesn't even look like a synth?
@@whaleshaveteeth Bro stop, I can't handle the GAS!
I can feel my budget screaming.
I think you may be just afraid you can't handle the OP-Z when it arrives.
You can't hear the budget screaming when OP-Z is BANGING louder.
@@whaleshaveteeth I mean, the OP-Z is a banger synth.
Crap, now I'm going to have to base my budget off of me buying this synth!
Outstanding stuff
Man!!!! Great Song!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks homie!
How the fuck do you not have more subscribers. CRIMINAL
I don't know?
You are awesome. Loved the whole composition of everything audiovisual.
Thanks mate!
Those new EPs 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Loving those vocal chops! 👊🏼

haha re: the 8 bar loops that don't fit together -- story of my life... except that in this case they do work well together so hush 😂
I have like 50 bookmarks for "how to write B sections" videos and blogs in my browser but for some reason I haven't found any time to go through even one of them them in the past five or so years. Ps. Typically they're 4 bar loops. Now I just had a faster tempo that I had to extend the length haha.

Wow this beat is sick. I do not understand how you were doing what you were doing in the jamming section, was that really all on-board the OP-Z? Can't wait to learn more, mine is in the mail.
Brilliant!
TY 🙏
Would this be an iPhone Pro version of the OP-1 or a a step down like na iPhone SE?
I would say it's neither of those. On that comparison, the OP-Z, in my opinion, would be a Oneplus 7 Pro or something. It's a whole different device with different strengths and weaknesses.
The biggest difference is that whereas OP-1 models tape and you need to learn to work with playing live or using the sequencers that can be a bit time consuming, OP-Z is instant and way faster when it comes to sequencing. Also editing the sequences and tweaking sounds afterward is first of all possible and secondly really fast since everything is nicely available for editing.
Hi, love watching doing your opz-fu. Have one myself and you're style and ideas are really inspiring. Therefore one question: you build together several tracks and in the end play them in programmed track patterns? Like 1223445 and in between you use live effects?
Thanks for the kind words mate! And yes, exactly. Chaining patterns together and using punch-in effects and master controls while the chain is playing.
nice
🙏🏻
Awesome! Is everything except the vocals stock?
Cheers mate! Nope, actually quite the opposite. I think there might be one pad synth that’s stock. Drums, vocals, horns, plucks, white noise etc are my own samples I’ve hoarded from the internet during recent years.
Wanna start jamming as well which would you recommend to start with? Thanks! Mostly Dark Industrial Techno
Pablo Dunkerly It’s pretty hard to say with this knowledge haha. I also don’t understand anything about techno. I guess the first question would be that do you want to be completely computer-free or not? Do you need a battery-operated device or is plugging in an option? How about budget? I would say that all the grooveboxes I own (OP-Z, OP-1, Deluge, Digitone, Maschine) would make great jamming devices based on your personal preferences.
@@whaleshaveteeth Thanks! I use Ableton for the most part but was wondering if both the Arturia Beatstep Pro and Arturia Minilab Mk II would be something to start with, budget is around 400... Thank you!
Pablo Dunkerly if you’ll get the Beatstep Pro for punching in percussion and samples + turning knobs, I’d probably upgrade the Minilab into a Keystep for more keys and the sequencer too?
@@whaleshaveteeth Perfecto, cheers mate!! Love the work :)
Elektron Cycles! For the money it wins!
when things got real = 2:10
Got a sub from me. Sweet.
Cheers mate!
Is that Woodkid's Iron I hear?
Haha, I take that as a compliment! Such a great track, whereas I've listened more Kendrick Lamar's Spiteful Chant, which samples Iron.
Cool...Hi-hat trick is a big "Yes". I love the Brassy chord sound that first laid down.
Are these you own sounds...really nice stuff
Cheers mate! And yep, my own samples indeed.
@@whaleshaveteeth Of course, they do sound great!
so can you make a cohesive song all together on the device? or do you have to make different riffs separately and then compile them into the video like this and edit them together?
Yes for sure - you can create a cohesive album on it. What you're hearing here is audio recorded directly to camera. The only thing I've done in post-process is a bit of mastering, but the arrangement and all are done completely on the OP-Z.
@@whaleshaveteeth what website did you buy yours on?
@@Ron.Swanson. I got it from a local brick-and-mortar in Helsinki.
There’s no video without wobbly chords, lol
Definitely not!
cheesy ograns yesssssssss
Delicious! This one’s some low-fat one though.
Sick man
Simon servida hi hats
Can anyone here tell me : can the OP- Z be played alone, with no paired computer or speaker? I’m considering purchasing one, but want to know whether or not it can be played solo, couch style
Yes, it’s essentially a standalone groovebox. I’ve made most of my beats with it on sofa and in public transportation.
Absolutely no computer needed! A phone as a screen is useful to learn in the beginning. But not needed after a few days. You'll need headphones because the built-in speaker is just a toy.
I mean you’ll need a speaker or headphones to hear the music, the built in speaker is a joke. But yes the little machine is stand alone, HOWEVER using a computer makes swapping custom samples and presets and stuff a lot easier and faster
This sounds so good! How do you organise the samples? I mean, do you configure the OP-Z with samples specially for this track?
I'm not sure I understood the question, but I just every now and then change all the samples I have in the device, see if I come up with something, and change them again. Drum kits and basses stay always the same. I've made a few kits when I got the OP-Z back in the day and they've been there from the start. The preset kits are pretty good too.
You can sequence chords? I’ve only just realised I feel like an idiot aha
Live and learn
Brilliant 😍
Lo-fi Pask cheers homie!
Sick 🙌
🤜🏼🤛🏼
I don't get how you get the trombone to sound so long and sustained.. when I change loop in and out positions in the sample it just starts stuttering. any tips?
Am I the one who hears 'Darude Sandstorm' in that progression right from the beginning? :D
Haha, hadn't though about it that way.
I already own an OP-1. Would you recommend getting an OP-Z as well? I see you have both. Like one more than the other?
I guess it boils down to personal preference and your style of music since they are very different devices after all. I can't say I like one more than the other but I like individual pieces in both more than the other's.
Whereas OP-1's synth sounds are richer and it packs more features when it comes to different sequencers and all, I enjoy OP-Z's fast and instant workflow. Everything is accessible right away and also there are eight "tracks" instead of OP-1's four. Also, the step components allow me to program different variations in beats almost endlessly. I'm not much of a keyboard player and I often struggle to stay in beat with OP-1 so OP-Z's sequencing and quantization features are very useful for me.
Haha, I don't know if that helped at all.
@@whaleshaveteeth This is actually the answer i was hoping for. Love my OP-1 but can get a bit lost in the bigger features. OP-Z is on the way :). Thanks for these videos ✊🏻
At the end something changed on the pitch, didn't it???
Yes, I don't even know what happened but something sounds off haha.
how make trap hihat and kick?? like trrrrrr
Step components, and more particularly the Multiply trigger.
how did you make every other high hat louder? I don't know that trick :(
1) hold shift
2) select every other step
3) assign the fourth step component, Velocity, to them
4) select the level of velocity you want by pressing a number from 1-9
5) release shift
The LFO can be used to effect volume alternatively. The random curve is nice and square wave can do the every other thing if you set the speed correctly . It’s kind of a lazy way to humanize things.
You're a pro
Not true, but thanks.
I love that lead sound, how did you make it? sounds almost like a vocal chop
Thanks! They are indeed vocal chops that I've sampled from Output's Exhale vocal engine. You can hear them without the beat at 2:10.
That multiplier function you have on the horns is super slick, but how do you make it work on OP-Z?
would luv to work as a product designer thear. just get to copy-paste basic DAW features into boxes and make fuck tons of money off soyboys on the intranet. must rule to spend like $1000 on something equivalent in functionality to like Ableton 5
Sounds great! Ping me in case you happen to make it real and when you have the first product available.
You haven't been involved in primetime's jingle?
Haha, nope.
Is that all synths or samples as well?
Most of them are samples. The wobbly chords are from OP-Z's engines.
Is the brass from the default sounds?
Nope, it's a sample.
@@whaleshaveteeth Oh, where can I find it? I see the trombone in the desc, but not the other one
@@EvanKrummel heh, probably nowhere as such, I've sampled it from another record.
where can i download this track?
It's not in any streaming services but I've been thinking about taking some old tracks and releasing them as an album probably in the future.
One can say: good idea.
"Jeremy Blake would like to know your location"
I’m a huge fan of his stuff so jamming together would be sweet ✌🏼
Hi Red Means Recording younger brother
I feel that those new instruments are more and more like gadgets with pre-made sounds for the clueless people to assemble bits into things vaguely called "music". Am i wrong ?
I'm not sure I understand the question here. I think presets in synths have existed since the '80s and what people decide to do or not to do with them, is everyone's own business, right?
Red means recording?
No midi input? No thanks
Are you Red Means Recording?
u stole this style and u know it
