Most people don't realize that, for this kind of demo, it's actually easier to affect the opponent's balance when they are holding on tight and keeping the body stiff. So when the demonstrator asks the partner to grab hard, he's already setting him up.
Seigo Okamoto of Roppokai talked about this. He knew it very well and therefore was of the opinion that Aiki-jujutsu must always provoke the adversary to do rash actions. Also for most people it's also intuitive that they have the upper hand if they can overwhelme others with force so they put a lot in. But yeah, limp arms make aiki difficult; limp arms aren't particularly dangerous either, though.
@@Veepee92 As a Chinese internal arts practitioner who has dabbled in some Kodokan and Sagawa-ha Daito Ryu, I think it's important to understand that this type of work is meant to be cooperative training for developing internal connection, structure, and power -- rather than actual combat applications. It is cooperative in the sense that the uke is supposed to provide resistance and their body as "dead weight" to the nage. So if the uke goes limp or freely makes adjustments to avoid losing balance when they feel the nage's incoming force, the training would be pointless.
@@StevenRayW I think for most people who practice these arts, what you mention is a given, but it's worth noting to the more "general" audience. Same thing goes for any drill really. If you did pad drills for boxing, and wanted to train head movement but your partner keeps throwing punches with too much variation from the get go, that wouldn't work either. Since you mentioned Sagawa-ha daitoryu, I think it was Sagawa who mentioned training with women was actually a good practice simply because guys could be "too easy" since they tend to use too much force in drills.
@@robertjohn3260 Agreed. I actually prefer the Japanese training model (i.e., grabbing) for beginners of internal arts because it teaches you how to manage resistance and builds solid connection/structure faster. Whereas in Chinese arts such as Taiji, people are told to stay "soft and relaxed" too early on and often end up turning into limp noodles that quickly fall apart under pressure.
That is very true. Exactly because of demo purpose and in real combat difficulty increases exponentially. But as you said, it’s about balance of power and how to manipulate opponents and yours to break their balance while preserving yours. It’s the very core philosophy of 合気(aiki), which directly translates to combination/encounter of ki. Explanation of 気is perhaps for another day

This has NOTHING to do with Daito Ryu. That guy in the video uses LOADS of chikara, or muscle, despite his boasting about using 'internal' power (whatever that is). If anyone thinks this guy is using 'aiki' like in daito ryu, they don't know what they're talking about. Unfortunately, the internet has just become a pool of misinformation and marketing.
1 He doesn’t call it aiki. He calls it naido. And probably does it because it’s somewhat different from aiki and to avoid definition Nazis like you. I also don't think he cares whether or not his art has anything to do with Daito Ryu. 2 I’d like to experience your aiki or see a video. You got any?
I've never felt either of these two gentlemen, but your observation skills are weak bro. Also it sounds to me like you are calling out Gozo Shioda's grandson a liar. Shioda-Sensei, in his first collaboration video said he had many different people on his channel, but he had never felt anything like this. The guy has been around the block, invited many masters to be on his channel and clearly knows the difference between a ton of muscle and something else. After he learns the corrections, at 15:17 for example, Shioda-Sensei literally says that he feels no muscle usage at all either when he performs agete in the previous video, or sagete in this video. He looks and seems genuinely surprised that effect.
@@elel2608 He says it's aiki: rising aiki and lowering aiki from daito ryu. He says so at the very beginning of the vid, so you're first comment is not honest.
Akuzawa Minoru is incredible. Astonishing to feel it live.
