God Ain’t Your Grandma (Making God an Idol)

  • What does God want from us? What does God deserve from us given that he's our creator?
Today, Fr. Mike shows how we can actually turn God into an idol-when we "choose our version of God." This is what happens when we pull God off the shelf when we want him or need him, but put him back on the shelf when we don't. Today, Fr. Mike invites us to ask God what he wants from us.

Not sure where she's at spiritually, but if it's laxity, try spiritual engagement outside of mass for a bit first. A good way to broach this matter might be to ask her to do some relevant spiritual activity together: pray a rosary, read scripture, etc. In the natural course of things, her attendance at mass will come up in conversation, and then you can tell her the truth: that you need her spiritual aid in her prayers and also in her being a vessel of grace in your life by staying in the life of the Church. If you're near each other, go to mass together. Between your regular meeting, your common spirituality, and your opening up of your needs to her, you'll both grow closer as a family and bring her back into the Church in a winsome way.

@@marcihf217 I love your heart for your family members. Just want to offer up something for consideration. What if the act of attending a service isn't what actually puts us in right relationship with God? What if confession of sin can be done anywhere at anytime? What if, instead, it's about going right to God through Jesus,...the perfecter and author of our faith...for forgiveness, healing, hope, courage, etc..? (Galatians 2:16, Hebrews 12:2) Praying with you...that your folks would see their need for Jesus and know how much he loves them.

And because he chose me, he asked me to be one with him in the Holy Eucharist. His body, blood, soul and divinity is infused into my body and my soul. Now it doesn't get more personal than that!!! Adult convert to Catholicism here. Lots of people wonder why God is so demanding and why the Church seems so strict about one thing and another. I struggled with this for a while, too, even after being received into the Church. I think it’s not so much that God “needs” our faithfulness; God is already complete and entire. It’s that God knows repentance, mass attendance, prayer, the pursuit of chastity, etc. are what carry us in the direction of our highest selves and toward inner peace.

I’ve been thinking about this a bit over the past few months. I have very religious people/devout/actual priests that I really trust. I think they have great insight, they’re incredibly helpful and have a gift in spiritual direction BUT they are human. Having OCD, I usually want a definitive answer to any question I have. My closest priest friend is awesome and he tries to help me break down moments in my spiritual journey so I can discern God’s plan more easily (not always talking big stuff, but just day-to-day stuff). Looking to others for guidance is a good thing, but when we start to trust the people more than God is when it gets dicey. I never thought I’d lose sight of that until a friend said to me “Abby, you know Father ___ isn’t God. Not everything he says is going to be absolutely perfect or true.” Regardless- keep in mind that people are flawed, they won’t always be there, but God WILL be.

The hospital can not let clergy see the patient list anymore because of HIPAA. If you don't call they will not know. Also, if your priest can't get there many large hospitals have a Catholic Chaplin on staff.

Do you really have charity if you dont care about who God really is? Isn't that lack of love for God? Now the answer is clearer: this is idolatry.

God is my spouse. I love that, he is. And he is always with me. I pray I don’t treat him like an “elf on the shelf”. I pray every morning after Bible in a year, I have been going to adoration every Saturday morning 5-6am and I want to be sincerely devoted to my spouse God. One day I would love to hear you speak on Adoration. I don’t want him as my idol,I want him as my spouse.

Another great, and easily understood video. I like the quick point at the end about the churches authority to interpret scripture, because the church collected the bible. It's interesting how many Protestants don't know this (including myself, before deciding to convert).

I told my friend this earlier, I don't like it when people play God and act like their word is law, my dad even argued that God doesn't work that way! I said "God is calling my sister he wants us to help her." He said "GOD DOESNT WORK THAT WAY!" I finally said isn't that idolatry? How do you know? He stopped.

We really, really need to understand the Old Testament relationship with God. We are directly commanded how and when to worship Him for a very distinct reason. He knows we as broken creatures are basically a bunch of arrogant dummies. Humility is key when you are the part of the relationship with ALL the issues. Most don't seem to realize that without Faith in the Father we are doomed

This is so good! I’ve always believed that, we, worship the God we think He is, in our mind. A God in a box....instead of who HE really and actually is ...Awesome, fierce in Love, He is the great I AM, Holy, 🕊🙏🏼

You explain this stuff so well, Fr. Mike! I think (or at least, I hope) the only time I've said "God's okay with such-and-such" is with regard to awkward, personal, informal, sometimes even stream-of-consciousness prayer. As someone who was plagued by scrupulosity and probably has OCD, it was immensely freeing to acknowledge that God most likely wasn't going to say "no, you're doing it wrong", and helped my prayer life a lot.

Speaking of idols, what are your thoughts of having statue of Jupiter honorably kept in Vatican Musuem complete with a rotunda etc.? When thousands of thousands of martyrs died to supplant paganism.
How can faithfuls who are trending media oppose Pacha when there are Roman and Greek pagan statues maintained in prominent exhibits with high honors, with the donation from the faithful, under the guise of a museum/secularism?
    Also, what about iconoclasm?

Well said. Years ago, God showed me that idolatry is when you distort the face of God as Fr. Mike said in another way. That's what heretics do. That's why the Church used to be so down on them. It still should be without the burning at the stake part. We distort God's face when we accept his mercy but not his judgment or vice versa.
